HATE FRUIT please help

Fanserve · 05/02/2021 20:20

I basically hate fruit (and love chocolate) but need to lose 30kg.
I have such a sweet tooth so need to replace the sweet treats with the fruit.
Someone mentioned that the fruit in waitrose is actually tasty and to shop there for fruit.
I have a local waitrose but wanted some suggestions/recommendations on which fruits to go for? Especially during “winter” season.
I can just about tolerate apples and strawberries. I like strawberries when it’s nice and sweet, but more often that not, they taste sour so I get put off.
When I think of fruit, I can only think of apple, pear, plums, peaches and strawberries. Anything else exciting out there?

Please help me to love fruits eventually!

Thank you

How much do you want to spend? Go to and s and get some of their preprepared fruit. Watermelon, melon, kiwi, mango, pineapple, grape.

So many things. Are you prepared to pay £££ for imported fruit art his time of year? Never mind the CO2.

I don't think your approaching it the right way. Fruit won't replace chocolate and it really is full of sugar even if natural fruit sugar.

DianaT1969 · 05/02/2021 20:35

Why replace sugar with more sugar? Fruit is just sugar - albeit with some fibre and nutritional benefits. Read up on sugar free eating and how it stops the rollercoaster of cravings. It takes around 5-6 days in my experience and you're really never bothered again. Everything tastes too sweet after you've given up. Pizza base tastes horribly sweet to me.
Dark chocolate is a good interim substitute. Berries in Greek yogurt. Homemade pancakes with cinnamon and lemon instead of sugar.

Timeforabiscuit · 05/02/2021 20:40

Honestly, don't worry about including it, snack on veggies instead.

I have a massive sweet tooth, and hate artificial sweetener , but what works for me is stripping out the sugar completely - as others upthread have said, your tastes change and everything tastes a bit sweeter anyway.

Snacks include, carrot sticks, red pepper, sugar snap peas and when I really need a fix, chocolate covered almonds.

I know it sounds joyless reading it - but once you get in the habit its absolutely fine!

I’m not sure why you’re so determined to eat fruit if you don’t like it? What’s the point? Fruit is good for you, yes, but it also contains lots of sugars.

You’d be better off getting your 5 a day by eating veg and weaning yourself off sugar as much as possible.

PurpleDaisies · 05/02/2021 22:30

I hate most fruit too. I just don’t eat it. I’d rather eat veg any day.

lazylinguist · 05/02/2021 23:05

Replacing something you love with something you don't even like really isn't going to work! Can you just chew some sugar-free gum or something, if you must have something sweet?

IstandwithJackieWeaver · 05/02/2021 23:08

Life's too short to force yourself to eat something you dislike. For me that would be turnips and swede. Have veg for a snack instead. Better for you as less sugar, lots of fibre and nutrients. It'll fill you up for fewer calories.

FluffyBlueJumper · 06/02/2021 06:59

Do not eat fruit then. It is packed with sugar and is, on its own, a terrible snack.

DoubleHelix79 · 06/02/2021 07:09

Try experimenting with poaching or even just briefly microwaving fruit. It can make even the dullest / not properly ripened fruit taste amazing. Peaches, pears, plums for example.

DoubleHelix79 · 06/02/2021 07:11

Oven baking works really well for some fruit too

Fruit is rubbish for dieting. Lots of sugar and it doesn't fill you up. You want protein.

mumcop · 06/02/2021 07:24

It's not a Terrible snack 🙄 everything in Moderation. Fruit is packed with vitamins! But if you don't like it but make yourself eat it. Snack on vegetables.

I am with you on that. I am a fruit lover though and have some every day.

I agree eith others that if you hate (have you tried it all though, there are millions of flavours and consistencies) fruit, snack on veg. If you force yourself eating something you don't like, you won't last a day. From my experience

FluffyBlueJumper · 06/02/2021 10:23

Don't make me say what I have not said Smile - I wrote that it is a terrible snack on its own. It will not fill you up. All the energy comes from fast-release sugars, which is not good for your blood sugar levels. You need to add protein.

BTW I love fruit!

DinosaurDiana · 06/02/2021 10:25

Carrot, cucumber and pepper sticks instead.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 06/02/2021 11:05

There are some sweeter veggies btw.
Kohlrabi, pakistani/indian carrot, bell peppers-orange and red, beetrooc can be sweet depending on how you prep it, tomatoes especially cherry ones. Parsnip is sweet. Butternut squash, sweet potato.

There is lots of veg to satisfy sweeter tooth imo

10kaDay · 06/02/2021 11:28

Agree with the various PP, the issue is not learning to love fruit (it doesn't matter if you don't eat fruit, what matters for both general health & weight loss is eating lots of vegetables)

Do you think excess sugar is behind your weight problem? (vs eg fatty foods/large portions). If so, read up on sugar addiction & take action to change your diet: white/flour based carbs possibly also part of the problem. For me, sugar/simple carbs are v addictive and make me hungrier.

I also crave carbs when I am tired & so sleeping more helps, as does staying hydrated.

If there a time of day you are used to having chocolate? If you want to replace that moment with something else then greek yogurt/nuts/bit of dark chocolate etc could work.

I also rate Nakd coco crunch bars (mushed up dates & protein bits - they taste pretty good, 106 cals, you wouldn't want more than 1).
If its cals you are concerned about, there are lots of low cal sweet treats (alpen bars, fibre 1 cakes/bars etc... ) which could be a place to start if you are not ready to give up sugar, but just stopping sugar for 1-2 weeks would probably be better and reset your taste buds

NannyR · 06/02/2021 12:17

I'm not a big fruit fan at all, I quite like a nice smoothie or blueberries or bananas cooked in pancakes. I also have (or had) a terrible sugar addiction, binging on chocolate, sweets and biscuits and have a lot of weight to lose. I've been doing the fast800 blood sugar diet for the last few weeks and it's made a huge difference to my sugar cravings, cutting out sugar and most fruit and cutting right down on carbs.
It might be worth trying to take a different approach to your eating, stopping the sweet stuff altogether, rather than replacing with fruit to see if it helps.
