Hummus

waynesbluestreak · 25/01/2021 19:53

Me again! Hummus - I can't believe how many calories a small dollop has. My brand of choice is the Sala one with pine nuts sprinkled on top. I like that it's very smooth. Can anyone suggest a lower cal hummus that is very smooth in texture? The last time I trie done it was quite coarse and didn't have a good flavour

I prefer a red pepper houmous to any other flavour, most supermarkets do a lower fat version too and it's smooth. I've got a sainsburys one in the fridge, 1/4 of the pot is 78cals

davidsSchitt · 25/01/2021 20:09

Make your own!

I used to but it wasn't a low fat version and I could never get it as smooth as the Sala one

You need to peel the chickpeas if you want smooth. It's never going to be low cal.

glowuptime · 25/01/2021 20:14

Another one for Sainsbury's, they have low fat versions be good to yourself mini pots 98cal.

davidsSchitt · 25/01/2021 20:15

Add the chickpea water from the tin slowly to get it smoother

HeronLanyon · 25/01/2021 20:19

Do you Sabra op. Theirs is too
Smooth to be believed ! I suspect it is almost whipped in the processing (and they probably use more oil than many)
I make my own and have left the mixer on for ages trying to sometimes get it a lot smoother. Ta for reminder Re peeling idont given lockdown I may just try this as an exciting ‘activity’.

Yes sabra! That it. It is unbelievably smooth isn't it which makes it very moreish. My local shop is Sainsbury's so I may try theirs. I don't have time in my life to peel chickpeas 😂

I like the reduced fat version from Aldi, but have never noticed commercial houmus not being smooth so may not have a sensitive enough palate to advise you. You do have to be careful how you consume it though. I like to smear in it a wrap stuffed with veggies rather than dipping where I would eat the whole pot. The moreishness may not be in its favour if your looking for less cals GrinGrin

Movinghouseatlast · 25/01/2021 20:28

Adding water when you make it makes it really smooth.

floopidy · 25/01/2021 20:29

I love hummus

But it makes me fart....

You could try this www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/easy-hummus-recipe Not authentic but got to be lower calorie?

HeronLanyon · 25/01/2021 20:33

I am devoting a large part of tomorrow to hummus - thanks for tips all. Only been making it for decades. Love it so I’ve never really thkight to tinker.
Other hummus news - Waitrose is out of stock online tahini (has been for some time in my area anyway) and Sainsbury’s appears not to sell it online delivery at all which seemed odd (or maybe of stock items don’t show up).
Anyway I feared maybe a supply problem ?

SchrodingersImmigrant · 25/01/2021 21:43

Ice makes it smooth. I love Kasih hummus, but yeah. Not particularly low in cal but bit of it is enough for a snack

LH1987 · 25/01/2021 22:24

Could you use a small handheld food processor on low cal humus to make it smoother?

FifteenToes · 26/01/2021 02:02

Funny thing hummus. I think because it's middle class and sophisticated people think of it almost like a health food. But you're right it is seriously SO high cal.

I've always really noticed the inferior taste of low fat versions, so I prefer to have the real deal but less often. I have however noticed that Tesco's, at about 220 kcal per 100g, is significantly less fatty than Waitrose/Co-op, at about 260, while tasting just as good.

HeronLanyon · 26/01/2021 07:18

Well I have now read a lot of hummus recipes as well as all good advice here in readiness for the great smooth hummus experiment day.
My tweaks -

A bit of water and shelling the chickpeas thanks to pp.

realised I never add oil as an ingredient but just in top with some paprika or pumpkin seeds or line nuts etc. I’ve always thought the oil from the tahini is sufficient. I’m going to add olive oil.

I’ve always just put all ingredients in and then whizzed. Now I read that tahini and lemon juice mixed first until ‘whipped’ makes a big difference. Before chickpeas.

Feel I may need to warn my neighbours about impending hours of food mixer.
Thanks all for advice and op for starting this rethink

Do people here really consider hummus sophisticated 😂😂😂😂

SchrodingersImmigrant · 26/01/2021 08:40

@HeronLanyon use ice instead of the water. My dh claims that's the secret to the ulltra smooth hummus

HeronLanyon · 26/01/2021 12:02

schroedinger noted. That will be another experiment. I will need a spreadsheet at this rate to observe the pure scientific method.
I have become momentarily diverted by a surprising desire for creamed corn or crèmes corn casserole (with lots of chilli etc). Hummus may be tomorrow.
I too was a bit surprised at the thought of hummus being any class or sophisticated. Given the amount of garlic I sometimes add (I know this is a divisive subject and it is perfectly good without) mine is for sure an acquired taste. When I make it for dp i have to dial back the garlic element significantly. Causes excess heat and sleeplessness there !

SchrodingersImmigrant · 26/01/2021 12:07

The hummus spread sheet😂 I like it

JovialNickname · 26/01/2021 12:09

Sadly hoummous is just a high cal food - even the reduced fat ones!

Like a PP I also enjoy the Aldi low fat one.. it's quite garlicky which I like. Not low cal but Sainsbury's does a 4 pack of snappable hoummous (ie individual portions) that are 93cal per little pot. Good if you can't stop yourself eating a whole big tub, like me.

JemimaTiggywinkle · 26/01/2021 12:13

Any hummus worth eating is pretty much 50% olive oil, sorry. Also have a very high salt content.

Sethy38 · 26/01/2021 12:19

How serious are you about weight loss?

If serious, then I’d steer clear of it.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 26/01/2021 12:20

Erm. I am serious about my weightloss and I have bit of hummus there and there...
