Second Nature or Noom?

Hello all

So I have 5 stone to loose. Am a total sugar and caffeine addicted emotional eater and have been all my life.

This needs to change. So my plan is 5 stone before I am in 50 (jan 2022).

So I have been looking at noom or second nature to help me start. Does anyone have any recommendations or experience to help me choose which one?

Honestly the thing that has worked best for me is buying a Fitbit, tracking my calories and exercise, and cutting out the foods I know I can't stop eating. I don't know anything about Second Nature but Noon has a trial period I think?

pussinwellyboots · 02/01/2021 09:37

Hi, I've been using second nature for a while now and it really works for me when I'm being focussed and using the app each day. I lost about 2 1/2 stone over 6 months. I've drifted a bit lately but need to re focus and loose another 2 stone and know that this healthy lifestyle approach really works for me.

If you want a referral code for second nature mine is www.secondnature.io/invite/naomit38

Noom didn’t work for me. On second nature I lost 13lbs in 6 weeks.

I have 3 stone to lose and will continue with Second Nature

Ignore the ‘eat less, move more brigade’ who will pile on here. If you feel you need to have a structured programme to get a kick start there is nothing wrong with that.

I found tracking calories messed with my head as it made me obsessed and who wants to write down everything they eat?! I weight carbs as SN is low carb, but nothing else’s weighed measured or counted

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 02/01/2021 10:23

@Nishky well, I like writing down what I eat every day, as I have already said, but I respect you wanting to do something different that works for you.

Nishky · 02/01/2021 11:50

@CarterBeatsTheDevil fair enough but I just think it is hard for people who are seeking help to lose weight and have clearly indicated that they are considering a programme to be told to ‘eat less, move more’ - there is often a psychological element to weight gain and sometimes things have to be sorted in your head- that was certainly the case for me.

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 02/01/2021 13:00

Huh. I hadn't really registered that it would sound like that, but I see your point actually. I have only been able to get to the point of managing my eating at all through a year and a half of therapy. Intuitive eating type programmes don't work for me because of the way my disordered eating has developed. But I know that for other people any form of counting or measuring is triggering and I appreciate you pointing out how what I said sounded.

I tried noom and I didn't really like it. Some parts of it were good but it was just too corny and patronising. Every day you clicked through articles written in this weird self depreciating yet cheerful style "wahey, us nerds here at noom are craaazy" type thing. The food database was ok but not as good as others I've tried. But it does have a cheap trial so no harm in trying it out.

FlyNow · 02/01/2021 13:13

If you try it and want to join, I recommend trying to cancel the trial. I did this and was offered over a 50% off discount (which I didn't accept as I really wanted to quit).

Nishky · 02/01/2021 14:19

@CarterBeatsTheDevil sorry if I was a bit snippy.

I tried Second Nature but couldn't stick to it. The whole Keto thing leaves me feeling like shit. I know a certain amount of Keto flu is normal, but I was still struggling with energy levels by week 4. Plus, most of the weight I lost in weeks 1-3 was fluid. It went back in quick enough. I agree with other posters - will be going down the upping exercise and eating less crap route this January.

Second Nature is definitely not Keto! Keto is very low carb, high fat. Second Nature is about eating less processed food and keeping an eye on carb intake, not cutting out completely. Both fruit and complex carbs are on the plan.

They encourage 3 small servings of starchy carbs each day, so eg brown rice, oats, potato or a good quality bread. Plus some fruit.
It's clearly explained in both the handbook and the app.

Good to read your feedback.

A family member has been following Second Nature for about a year and has been doing really well. She's cooked several of the recipes for me and they've all been delicious. Since starting it She has loads of energy, says she feels great and certainly looks great too!

I started it in March but then the first lockdown happened and I couldn't shop appropriately, so gave up before the end of the free trial.
I'm seriously thinking of signing up again.

Mararunner · 02/01/2021 19:29

I've lost almost 3 stone on Noom. I found the lessons really useful in understanding why I was overeating, and managing feelings and ideas of control about food. Plus Noom's end goal is for you to do it alone, so there is a gradual weaning off of the lessons etc. Noom suggests weighing every day, which was weird at first but really helped me see the normal fluctuations in my weight, I didn't starve myself for a weekly weigh in then binge after like I did with WW and slimming world. The pricing is a bit weird though, so if you do sign up, do the 14 day trial, then on fb there is a Noom uk group, people post money off codes in their all the time. I think the latest one is NEWYEAR90. But don't hold me to that!!

Nishky · 02/01/2021 22:58

@Nefbachmorf - the recipes are lovely, also some are very quick to make, I always convinced myself I didn’t have time to cook!

I feel so much better apart from the weight loss, my heartburn and stomach issues have disappeared

Hollyhocksarenotmessy · 24/01/2021 23:24

I'm doing the Noom free trial. I think it might be quite a good program for me, but can see why it wouldn't suit anybody.

I went through the trial set up questions but didn't actually sign up because it was too expensive. 2 weeks later I got an email with 2 weeks free trial then 6 months for £99, and signed up then.

I like the articles and learning, and reminders to log meals.

I’m on Second Nature and can thoroughly recommend it. It deals with so much more than eating & losing weight, eg sleep, motivation. You don’t need the tech package imo if you’ve got scales, which makes it much cheaper.

Jigglemonster · 29/01/2021 10:11

I'm using Noom and really find it good. It is helping me to change my mindset around 'dieting'. I have been doing it since September, focusing on trying to lose weight slowly and not feel deprived (I have done this so many times and just end up losing loads then gaining it back a few months later).

I've lost 10.5kg so far, and had a bit of a decadent December so understandably didn't lose weight. Though for the first time ever, I didn't feel really guilty and bad about it, and wasn't stressed about gaining back a few pounds. I just accepted it and found it quite easily to adjust back to normal healthy eating after Christmas and am back on a downwards trajectory.

It is a bit corny, so not for everyone, but I find the group function good for motivation and the psychological spin on the lessons have helped me change how I think about food.
