How long would it take to loose a significant amount of weight?

I'm fat. Very fat! I'm also getting married next September. At the start of lockdown I lost nearly 2 stone in 5/6 weeks but put a stone back on when I returned to work.
I would like to set myself a goal of loosing at least 4-5 stone by august. Is this possible to do healthily or am I setting myself up for failure?
Any support/advice would be amazing

I need to do the same

I let myself down when I’m tired, usually after work. So knowing my trigger points helps

I’ve done it before by following the biwi low carb threads here on mn but low carb is tough going

katand2kits · 28/12/2020 10:19

I would make it a goal over 12 months. Losing 5 stone in 7 months is a very tall order.

katand2kits · 28/12/2020 10:20

Even if you've lost 3 stone by your wedding that would be a huge achievement. But remember your husband is marrying you anyway. Don't make your weight loss goals all about your wedding day.

readingismycardio · 28/12/2020 10:24

First of all, congratulations on your wedding!

I think it's more than possible, tbh. You have 8 full months. The most helpful advice (in my opinion) is to be kind to yourself and try to achieve the right mindset (ie: what do I do this for? What benefits will it have for me?) and to try to find any kind of exercise you like (you don't have to love it, just tolerate it Grin).

For example, I lost a lot of weight with zumba and a decent diet. Would that work for you? Is it the kind of exercise you'd enjoy?

Best of luck, OP!

I think it's possible - I've lost 9 stone in 2 years and plan to have my last 3 stone off by July.

The easiest thing I've found is to break down that 4-5 stone into a monthly target. I try to do 7lbs per month so only 1-2lbs per week. If you stick to that then you can reach 4 stone in 8 months.

I've been a ww member since December 18 and eat mainly plant based (with the odd sneaky bit of cheese)

AcornAutumn · 28/12/2020 10:57

OP how did you lose so much in that time please?

Good luck, sounds like you'll be grand!

madcatladyforever · 28/12/2020 10:58

if you go on Exante you can lose one stone a month but only if you stick to it.

emmaluggs · 28/12/2020 11:01

The biggest thing I’ve learnt is the time will pass anyway. Personally I think it’s a tall order to do sustainably, I’ve lost a pound a week since end of October and I’ve hardly noticed. It’s not a ‘lot’ but it’s been sustainable and easy to do and therefore I’m going to be in a much better place come this time next year, rather than trying to loose loads in a shorter time frame and gaining and loosing th same pounds over and over

Thanks all. @AcornAutumn last time I just calorie counted with my fitness pal with such an excess to loose it seemed to come off quite quickly.
Anything will obviously be a bonus and I'd love to loose at least 3 stone by September but understand it will be hard work!

This is what I'm hoping

Nothing drastic but it should come off as there is so much of it!

makingmiracles · 28/12/2020 12:41

I also have a lot to lose-10st ideally. I had started last year to do Omad, which is fasting then eating within a time window, at the beginning of the year i lost 2 stone in 1.5 months but then lockdown happened and it all went to shit and I couldn’t get back on track. I plan to start omad again in the new year as it did work and there are multiple health benefits. Good reads are the obesity code and any fasting books, they explain the science behind why it works.

Using MyFitnessPal is a great tool. Maybe reflect on why you stopped using it and put it back on again?

I think it's do-able but only just! I lost 7 stone 10lbs in 15 months (slimming world).

But every half a stone you lose makes you feel better. It's not like you have to wait until you hit target to start feeling confident again. I think when you have a lot to lose it can feel a bit overwhelming. I just focused on half a stone at a time (my average monthly loss)and they soon add up!

Good luck!!

squiddybear · 28/12/2020 13:44

Thanks all. I was due to do my free visit at my local gym but tier 4 has struck so they are all closed for the foreseeable which is a pain!
I will have a look at realistic goals.

There's plenty of things you can do at home. Do the trial of Les Mills on demand. You don't need a gym
myfuckingfreezer · 28/12/2020 14:02

Very possible. I lost 4 stone in the first 6months of 2020 healthily.

I took up couchto5k, did intermittent fasting (so at my first meal at 1pm and second at 7pm) then a chocolate snack at 8pm. Cut down on carbs and up on veg but also celebrated a birthday, had a pre pandemic holiday, Easter etc in that time so no denial of things.

UntilYourNextHairBrainedScheme · 28/12/2020 16:01

I've lost 4 stone since the middle of July (just over five months) and certainly expect to have lost another stone by the middle of Feb, so if you're starting off very overweight and have the right, positive, mindset now then I think five stone in eight months is actually very comfortably managable.

I've been doing a very simple take on intermittent fasting (18:6) - no complicated rules, just no calories in the fasting hours, eat lunch and dinner in the eating hours, and mostly but not entirely avoiding bread and processed sugar and mostly avoid snacking on anything but unsalted nuts and fruit. Since October I've also been walking an average if 6km per day (some days 3km, some days 12km, some days 6km, depending on work shifts and kids etc.)

That's it really - no money paid out to the diet industry, no Apps, no gym, no equipment except walking clothing, no calorie counting. For me the key is to keep it simple and not over think. I do still drink alchol a few nights per month, adjusting eating window to fit.

However I also finished a very stressful life phase pretty stressful life phase in early July, and essentially a switch flicked in my brain and I was just mentally lighter and ready to soet my health out - I hadn't had head space to cope with one more thing before that, and was stress eating, which I was just able to stop overnight when the stress ended.

Good luck - its very possible.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 28/12/2020 17:13

It's very possible. Go back to fitness pal and go for it.

Workout as well, some nice home exercises to tone up, it will make big difference to your posture and figure. You can find youtube hiit sessions taking just 15 min, so no excuses. Because your posture changes, you will feel better and it does help morivation in my experience

RainingBatsAndFrogs · 28/12/2020 17:59

You can do 4 stone in 8 months pretty sensibly, I think.

Start now, enjoy the results of your achievements early on, and let that motivate you.

Try and adopt a method that fits in your lifestyle, and will be easier to maintain once you reach your goal. Just get used to eating like that, and enjoy it. Add exercise that you enjoy, too.

Good luck, OP, and enjoy planning your wedding.
