Portion size

So there is lots of information about portion size in relation to individual items e.G meat, nuts, cheese, but what about when it's all cooked in a dish. For example, if I have made a curry, chilli, shepherd's pie, how do I know the 'right' amount to serve? Any help?

Most recipes say on them how many portions they are meant for.
If your on something like MFP you can create recipes which will give you cal context etc for the portion.

The first time I (re)make a recipe I weight every single ingredient (including cooking oil, etc) and calculate the total number of calories in the dish.
I then do an estimate of the number of portions (but you have to be very honest when you help yourself) or weigh the final dish and my portion and calculate the number of calories in my helping.

I bought measuring cups from Amazon which help you portion meals e.g. mash, pasta, veg, chilli. It come with a list for dry and cooked food.
