Anyone successfully lost weight in menopause?

If you have please tell me how. I’ve gained over a stone in the last year, on top of the 10lbs I gained the year before that. I’ve started various attempts at weight loss. Lasted 2-3 weeks each time and seen absolutely no change on the scales. I hate my body and I need to stop the continuing gains before I’m into yet another clothes size.

I’m on HRT and feel much better for it but I look awful.

I hear I need to be strength training as well as cardio so interested if anyone has had success in that. I can’t join a gym due to disabled dc at home. Everything I do needs to be based at home.

Grateful to hear of success stories. I’m 50 btw.

Thanks 😊

Just heading into menopause so looking forward to advice too

Yes, track everything on my fitness pal. Do weights 5 days a week. Currently we're doing online classes very early in the morning before kids are up.

You have to be extremely strict with tracking though and don't drink your calories.

It's hard but it's worth it. Take a before photo before you start so you can see the inches loss.

MrsRabbitsCleaner · 22/11/2020 20:40

What sort of weights do you do gamerchick?

Thanks gamerchick. Inspirational as always.

Yes I lost weight using My Fitness Pal to log all my food intake. It takes a while to begin with but it's really worth it. I work out 3 or 4 times a week with Les Mills on demand and generally do a day of weights (Bodypump) and a day of cardio. I think dropping calories is way quicker than upping exercise for losing weight.

Intermittent fasting, 16:8 eating healthily in the 8hour window. Listen to Dr Jason Fung who explains why it works & is easily sustainable. It’s free, doable from home & doesn’t require hours of exercise to work.

Kettlebells. But use a dumbbell for some moves at home if I'm not sure if my form and don't have the PT there to correct it. A dumbbell at home is a good starting point.

I also have a slam ball at home as well.

There are loads of gyms online I think. It's the only way they can survive.

Another vote for fasting. I only eat one meal Monday to Friday and relax and eat what I want weekends. Walk a lot. Exercise is mostly yoga but hot and sweaty kind, builds muscle. Weights too and hiit workouts but 90% yoga at the mo, only one I can face after work.

I'm the same weight now as I was 20 years ago and I had put a lot on, sustained for 2 years now.

I weigh myself once a week and record it in my bullet journal.

I love food, cook a lot and eat a lot. Fasting keeps the weight in check without fussing about what I eat, works for me.

I had to bin HRT
Made me balloon

Thank you everyone. I was started to despair that losing weight whilst menopausal was impossible. I’ve never not lost weight in the first 2-3 weeks of a diet before.

My weight came on before HRT so that’s not the culprit in my case I don’t think.

Yes just lost a stone using Noom - basically calorie counting and working in bad food related habits. Have got used to the fact that I really don’t need that much on my plate. And yes to strength training but it’s mostly do do with food

redtulip12 · 22/11/2020 21:19

I have lost the stone I gained since becoming premenopausal. Tried fasting, calorie counting etc but couldn't keep it up. In the end I have cut out sugar. I was eating chocolate every day it was almost an addiction. I no longer eat cakes/biscuits and chocolate and also cut down wine and swapped for gin with low calorie tonic. I also do Les Mills online classes (just 30 minutes) 4 times a week. I lost the weight and have kept it off. I have the odd cheat day but am so happy with the change to my body that I don't want the sugary food anymore. It is possible. Good luck

I'm 50, perimenopausal but not on HRT.

I've lost 3 stone since July on Fast 800 combined with intermittent fasting on 17:7. I have miso soup for lunch Mon to Fri, and then a decent meal in the evening. I'm a bit more relaxed at the weekend but try to stay below 1000 calories.

I'm tracking my calories on My Fitness Pal but I'm not doing any additional exercise other than walking to and from work each day so 2 x 25 minutes.

I have a week 'off' about every 8 weeks when I still do the intermittent fasting but relax the calorie counting.

It's the first time that I have ever successfully lost weight.

polkadotpjs · 22/11/2020 21:20

I don't know but read with interest being 2 stone up in peri. I gained weight since Sertraline so am considering a switch

That hurt my head to read. Your bones or muscles won't thank you for that diet when you're older.
Vargas · 22/11/2020 21:37

I've had to reduce my calories by about 25% but the weight is slowly coming off. I aim for 1500 per day max. Plus I do minimum of 10,000 steps plus regular yoga and the occasional run (but I've got a dodgy knee so less often than I'd like). I try to do strength training too but it's hard to fit it all in. It's so annoying as I used to be the type who could eat as much as I liked and stay slim.

gamerchick · 22/11/2020 21:46

Use this tdeecalculator.net/

Work out everything in that and see how much protein especially you need. People are scared of calories and think they need to stay under 1000, which will make you lose weight but it's not fueling your body properly. Relearn all that crap and you'll still lose weight and make better choices food wise. MFP will help with that if you're honest with it. It'll calculate a more sedentary lifestyle for you and work it out over the week, so you'll know how many excess you have to play with on a weekend... Or whenever you relax a bit.

But weights will change your body shape and you find you don't care about what the scales say, because the way your clothes fit will say something else.

refusetobeasheep · 22/11/2020 22:26

I'm on week 9 of the fast800 and have lost 10kg so a stone and a half. It involves Hiit and resistance training too, which can be done at home, 25 mins a day. 3 weeks left then will move to two fast days a week to maintain the weight loss and slowly lose a bit more.

MrsRabbitsCleaner · 22/11/2020 22:49

Thanks again everyone. I know that severely restricted calories won’t work for me but IF I can definitely do, MFP I’ve used before so can start using that again as well and I’ll look into the online exercise programs that have been mentioned. I have 3kg dumbbells too (never used 😅) so that’s a start!

52, losing weight on 1200 calories a day. Have lost nearly 30kg this year, with the same again to go. My problem is I'm very sedentary, if I could move more I would lose faster.

Good luck.
