Any whole30 or Paleo eaters out there?

I did whole30 in July and I am totally converted! I'm now still eating almost 100% Paleo/whole foods (I have only reintroduced red wine) and still feeling really good. However, I'm 12 weeks in now and getting a bit lonely here in my cave.

A quick search suggests no threads about whole30/paleo for years, however I figure that can't be true. There must be others out there doing it?!

I just did a Whole30 September and felt fantastic. Things then went a bit awry at the beginning of this month, as we went to visit my family/in-laws in anticipation of it being our last chance before further Covid restrictions, so ate what I was given!

I'm pretty much back on it now with the exception of red wine and dairy, which I missed so much. I'm convinced that yoghurt, kefir and good cheese are necessary for my gut bacteria health...

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 11/10/2020 09:50

Me! I dip in and out.

Would love to dip in again if you want a chum?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 11/10/2020 10:37

Hi! Yes I'd love a few people to natter about it with. I try not to talk about it too much in RL because I think people get a bit prickly about their own food choices when you say you're not eating x,y,x....

I'm still 100% on it with the food, I thought I'd miss dairy but actually I haven't at all. I have had red wine though so not technically whole30 but I am finding now that drinking every weekend is not actually making me feel too good. I'm going to try and not drink next weekend but then by Friday I'm often in need of a glass to relax.

I'm not entirely sure that I'm strict enough with behaviours either, I do pick and graze a bit and I am also rubbish at pre-workout/post workout food.

Did you do it to lose weight? And did you lose much?

MsRinky · 11/10/2020 12:33

Yes, I did want to lose weight and I did - 12.5 lbs in the 30 days - but I also exercised 6 days a week, and I have a lot to lose.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 11/10/2020 13:27

@MsRinky that's great, well done! I did it to lose the last pesky stone (stone +2lbs) that I'd put back on in lockdown. I lost 11 in the first 30, a further 3 in the second and currently I've actually regained 1 or 2 of those. However, I also like you work out 6-7 days a week, I am a runner and I've been training really well (improving pace and overall distance) and just running well. Plus I do circuits classes and have been really enjoying those. As a result, I am looking rather, well, buff to be fair! I can see actual muscle formed on my arms and legs now, so that may account for the little Weight gain. It's annoying though because I thoroughly enjoyed not being a slave to the scales for the first 30/60 days. Now I've started weighing myself more frequently I can feel it affecting my mood, so again it's a behaviour I want to cut right down on.

So does anyone want to join me in another Whole 30 starting today?

I get to day 11, every time, feel amazing and quit!!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 12/10/2020 06:18

@Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow I'm with you! I am still ok with the food but I'm really trying to work on the behaviours for the next few weeks. I have actually had my book back from my friend to reread as I feel like I want to centre myself a bit. What are you going to eat today? Have you done a shop?

Today is my 84th day straight with no dairy, no grains, no sugar, no soy, no chemicals and no sweeteners so I'm feeling pretty chuffed with myself

My big goal this week is to do yoga every day as well; I exercise a lot but I returned to full time work in September after 5 years off and yoga has gone out the window. And only eat when I'm hungry!

Good luck @Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow!

Sorry, massive bold fail!

Blimey! 84th day straight is impressive! Wow. What are your tips for willpower?

I don’t need to lose weight and am fit. I need to stop binging on chocolate when stressed and bored - all the time right now. And I need to do daily yoga or I get injured.

I’m so impressed!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 12/10/2020 07:25

@Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow at the risk of sounding like an absolute whole30 wanker, I think it's not so much about willpower and 100% about mindset. I watched an interview with mellissa Hartwig /urban in my very early days and she said (paraphrased) basically once you stop seeing all this crap food as a treat and eating well as a punishment; once you see eating well as the single greatest gift of self-care you can give yourself, you don't need willpower. What you actually need is to be "selfish". I really really took that on board and something clicked in my head.

Plus results. I can see and feel it working. It took 60 days for example to see an improvement in my rosacea, and also I have a bunion/arthritic toe which was really aggravated by running. It was 6/7 weeks in until I noticed it wasn't hurting any more. My foot has actually shrunk so much I need new running trainers because they are now slipping where before they were snug. Things like that really help spur me on

Have a great day #1 today Smile

Hello Smile
off to Google to remind myself what exactly is allowed (have done it years ago) and hopefully will join you soon....
Don't eat dairy/grains/soy anyway so will see what else I will need to skip...

thenewaveragebear1983 · 13/10/2020 15:51

@swlondonnanny you're halfway there anyway, it will be a breeze for you. No dairy, grains, soy, legumes, sugar or certain food additives.

Found this useful cheat sheet for food additives which I thought I'd share for anyone who is reading labels!

Thank you Smile
Had a look and will join you all on Monday 26th.
Am in quarantine just now for another week or so so will just finish eating what I stocked up on before travelling
Hope everyone is doing well today Grin

thenewaveragebear1983 · 15/10/2020 15:56

I'm doing well today, although yesterday I just could not stop eating! It was all 'compliant ' but I had no off switch at all. I ended up making some stewed apple, cinnamon, ginger, nuts and raisins and had some with chia seed/almond milk like an overnight oats type thing. It was lovely actually, not sure it's technically allowed in the first 30 days though but I just needed something bulky and sweet.

Tonight I have pork steak with swede and chorizo hash and sauerkraut, (sounds weird but it's very yummy, a nice rustic Eastern European type flavour)

Was doing brilliantly until today. A mince pie
lead to a pile of (dark) chocolate.

Sigh! Back on day one tomorrow

thenewaveragebear1983 · 21/10/2020 17:33

How's everyone doing?
I've had a good week, no non compliant foods although I have eaten probably too much dried fruit and nuts, and eaten them when I didn't really need it either. I'm just counting down the days til half term now and will plan a really strict week to get my head back in gear.

I'm running an endurance challenge on Saturday, 12 x 1 mile runs, on the hour every hour for 12 hours (about 20 km in total) , and I am a bit concerned how I will eat! I'd imagine the easiest would be toast or fruit but obviously can't do that, so I think I'll have to eat very light and often and maybe a smoothie instead of solid food!

Made it to 100 days!

OP posts:
WhatWillSantaBring · 03/11/2020 12:42

hello! (Especially hello to @thenewaveragebear1983 who convinced me to do this on another thread).

I started on 1 November, and am finding that I am very hungry. But, I think the hunger I feel isn't actually hunger, but a sugar craving because it's the same sensation I have after a reasonably big meal, where I don't feel satisfied until I've eaten something sweet. And kicking my sugar habit is the #1 reason for doing this. I managed to put on 2.5kg in two weeks over half term, mainly because I let the sugar monster out of his house and he ran riot...

Does anyone have any tips they can give me? Is this going to help me kick my sugar habit?

thenewaveragebear1983 · 03/11/2020 21:27

@WhatWillSantaBring 👋 hi! It's only been a couple of days so stick with it. The sugar craving after meals will go but I find I still want something sometimes. Are you eating enough fat, and having really big meals? In the early days it helped me to eat massive meals. Also one tip I read on the whole30 forum was to have a bowl of salad and vinegar or mayo after your meal, just as a palate cleanse. Would that help?

I'm on 106 days today! I do have some fruit and occasionally dried fruit these days, but I need to stop it, as some days I feel like it's a bit of a habit/craving not necessity.

OP posts:
WhatWillSantaBring · 04/11/2020 12:54

I think I'm scared to eat too much, as the mistake of putting on the 2.5kg means I'm desperate to lose weight doing this (whereas I planned on doing it originally just to kick the sugar habit).

In a single white female manner, I'm also following your lead by running. I've never been a runner, but did C25K in lockdown 1, and it is currently my #1 form of exercise (with weights/resistance training on the other days). I've always wanted to be runner, as it's cheap, quick, easy to do anywhere in the world etc etc, but I've always hated it. I haven't completely got the bug, but I'm enjoying it.

Well done on your 106 days - that is awesome!!!

thenewaveragebear1983 · 04/11/2020 17:08

@WhatWillSantaBring yay! Are you enjoying it? I get that being scared to eat too much, but honestly in the first few days I think you need to be so full of nutritious food to get you through the cravings. For a lifelong dieter/calorie counter/macro counter like me it was really eye opening because I felt like I was eating loads but I lost 11 lbs that first month! The whole30 isn't just about food of course, it's about habits so actually allowing yourself to eat brought nutritious food and trusting yourself is a good thing. Plus also realising that actually you can eat loads of nutritious food every day as long as you don't eat the crap. People are always amazed at how much I eat (absolutely tonnes!)

I currently am isolating as I have lost my sense of smell, everyone in my office has tested positive and I think I've got the 'rona coming my way..... I miss running already!
