Helping my dad lose weight

My dad is mid 60s and his weight has crept up over the years after being very fit in his youth.

Covid has been the push he needed to do something about it and he is now committed to starting a healthy eating regime.

I haven’t asked how much he weighs but I would estimate he needs to shed at least 3-4 stone. He has asked me to help him as he has never been on a diet before. We’ve been thinking about what might be the best way to go. He thinks he would like some structure rather than going it alone and doesn’t particularly fancy cutting out carbs. He quite likes the idea of intermittent fasting but the issue with this is that you need to eat ‘normally’ when you’re not fasting. He’d struggle with this I think as he’s completely lost sight of what a normal, healthy diet looks like. So I was thinking WW or SW might be the way to go? Emphasis on lean protein and fruits/vegetables and not too much counting.

Does anyone have any wisdom to share?

I have found Noom good for helping to change habits, if he is able to / willing to connect online. Otherwise something with a physical weigh in and meetings might be best.

Without knowing anything about him here are some ‘easy’ things:

  1. Aim for 8-10k steps a day
  2. Cut out alcohol
  3. Use a tracking app eg Lose It so he can identify any high cal food he’s eating that he can do without
