I have wanted to lose a bit of weight for a while now and tone up, but I’ve been finding it very hard, so I’ve decided to try something new and wondered if anyone would like to join me.
It’s not a diet as such, because I want the focus to be more on being kind to myself and treating myself right.
Here’s my problem with diets: people lose weight and put it all back on when they go back to normal
They are relentless - they get boring, so you give up
It feels like you are punishing yourself
They get too competitive. People feel bad if they have more weight to lose than someone else, or they feel guilty if they slip up.
So, I’m going to try creating healthy habits for myself. I’m going to do a maximum of four new habits at a time to start with. When something truly becomes a habit, then that becomes something I ‘just do’. I will stick to each habit for a week, starting on Saturday (as weekends are hardest). Here are some examples of habits I have thought of:

  • having one meal of carbs a day
  • having three alcohol free days per week
  • going for an early morning run or walk every day
  • keeping a diary every day
  • do something ‘self care’ every day, e.g. paint nails
I will do it for a week at first. I I like it/ think it’s easy enough, I’ll keep that habit and add a new one. Otherwise I’ll swap it out for another one. So, if one week I try fasting until lunch, then I get fed up with that, the next week I’ll try one snack a day only. As you can see, the emphasis is on health and happiness, rather than beating myself up. I’ll record it in bullet journal style.

So basically, I will weigh myself, but I’m not going to rely on it because it fluctuates so much. If I focus on the scales too much then I know I’ll give up. I feel slimmer and I look slimmer so it must be working.
I’ll come up with some new targets tomorrow as normal and I’ll post them on here. I think I’ll probably stick to calorie counting for one more week before period week! It does work well. I’m happy to lose weight slowly.
Thing is, I am quite within my BMI now but I carry all my weight around my middle. If I wasn’t an apple shape I probably wouldn’t be worried about it. I literally have nothing on my thighs, hardly anything on my bum or arms and it’s all round my waist which is really unhealthy. It’s got to go.
Keep at it everybody! I’m having a day off today as me and DH are going out for a meal but I’ll have a salad for lunch to make up for it and then enjoy myself tonight. Have a great weekend!

Hello again!!

I lost this thread somehow so v.happy to see it pop up again and catch up on what you've been up to 😀

My weight has been gradually climbing and I admit sometimes it's difficult to see - even though I know I am growing a baby so weight gain is entirely normal! I'm keeping up with the exercise, ran a 5k on Tuesday and another yesterday followed by a big back workout which means it's yoga and rest day today.

Do you have any plans for your birthday @Dashel? Slow and steady is definitely the key to long term weight loss but it can be very frustrating!

Sairafina · 11/09/2020 13:47

Did you end up taking any measurements @Nuffaluff? What sort of scales do you use? Mine can be so temperamental, can gain weight just by moving them! Where are you going for your meal?

I have a busy weekend of socialising so going to make the most of not being in the kitchen!

Hello! Friday night already. Today was crazy because DD got a fracture and is in plaster so I had to work late to catch up after our morning at hospital.
Having a beer while I cook now!

I think the magnesium is helping so thanks for that tip. I still wake in the early hours but don't feel so wired and most nights went back to sleep quickly. Last night I was awake between 3 and 5 but I drank a caffeinated drink on Thursday so probably linked to that.

The only healthy habit I have stuck to all week is the exercise. But it's a start!

Be patient Dashel! It's a long journey.

Dashel · 12/09/2020 18:55

I’m glad that everyone is back on here and seem to be making progress!

I have no patience, absolutely none. I was a bit carb heavy yesterday and put on a pound this morning. We are due to go out for dinner tonight so went for another very long (9 mile walk) today. FitBit says I burnt 1100 calories 🥳

I am getting changed and instead of wearing jeans, I am wearing a shirt dress that I got on my recent shopping trip. I wouldn’t have worn it in public when I got it as my tummy was too noticeable for me too feel comfortable in it so this is a positive step. I would love a style makeover and too feel more fab than frumpy.

@clearsommespace I’m really glad the magnesium seems to be helping is it worth throwing in some medication or a calming yoga practice before bed for extra help? I do Yoga with Adrienne sleepy video that’s 18 minutes and free on YouTube.

@Sairafina I think it would be a bit worrisome if you didn’t gain weight but don’t let that put you off eating healthy food and making good habits and time for suitable exercise.

@Nuffaluff good I think a communal diary and place for ideas and encouragement would be perfect x

I hope you enjoyed your meal out Dashel. Sounds like you deserved it. It's great that you were able to wear your new dress.

I don't think I need calming yoga before bed as I am always really sleepy in the evenings. It's the small hours which are the problem.
A while back I was going to do yoga after work before cooking dinner in order to disconnect. That could be a new habit to add when I feel ready.
I won't be able to even try for the next few weeks as DD will need lifts to school and back. It's across town and she usually takes take 2 public buses. But she's on crutches.Sad
Anyway, time to do a living room workout.

Sairafina · 13/09/2020 13:50

I had a terrible night's sleep last night but not going to fall into the trap of binging on carby foods to get me through the day! Just waking up slowly with a coffee then will head to the gym for a 5K. I've got lots of prepped fruit in the fridge (watermelon and guava 😋) so shall snack on that instead of reaching for the pop tarts!

Celebrating a friend's birthday lunch then probably a nap and a quiet evening at home

Dashel · 14/09/2020 10:46

It was a lovely meal out thank you. They do great veggie food so it’s a real treat for me to decide over options that all sound great.

I’m currently two pounds more than I was on Friday but although I haven’t been horrendous with my food, I have done a lot of exercise and eaten out and had some salty foods so hopefully it will drop off as it has before. I don’t want to get in the habits of eating crap all weekend and starving in the week, but an occasional meal out is needed and hummus on salted crackers for lunch in the middle of a diy project isn’t going to kill me.

I got DH to do a Joe wicks HIIT workout this morning before work 🥳 plus it’s stunning so should be a lovely lunch break walk and ok to get lots of steps and sunshine.

Shopping is ordered and is quite virtuous. I love internet food delivery it’s so much less stressful than going to a supermarket

clearsommespace · 14/09/2020 14:27

Glad you enioyed your meal out.

It was a struggle to fit in exercise before work in addition to taking DD to school. (She normally leaves when I am still a sweaty red faced mess!). But I did it!
