Noom, has anyone tried it?

I'm on the second day of the free trial so just starting off.

So far I like the psychological aspects but I'm quite hungry now!

I've always done low carb diets before but never managed to keep the weight off.

This is not low carb

So I'll give it a go. I'm 12.12 stone and would like to get back to the 10 stone area

Does anyone have experience with this app?

I've looked at it a few times but I'm pit off by A the cost after the trial and B just joe Americanised it is. Are you managing to adapt it ok?

FrameyMcFrame · 17/07/2020 23:20

All the foods in the drop down lists seem to include uk versions and there's the option of measuring in different units of weight.

So far it seems quite similar to weight watchers in the sorts of foods and methods. It's introducing the features gradually.

I'll see if I lose some weight over the trial period, might be worth paying for it, if it's going to work...

I did about four days of the free trial then realised it was WW in disguise, with less reliance on the weird wafer bars and Muller yoghurts. Def not worth the money!

Shedtheload · 18/07/2020 05:42

I think it’s basically just calorie counting. You can get that for free with MFP. The psychological aspect isn’t that good either as it’s very generic. You’d be better off using the cash to spend on a course of CBT if you have an issue with binge eating or maybe one of the books that people recommend, Brain Over Binge I think.
I also looked at Noom and it suggested that I eat 1200 calories a day. I’m now eating way more than that and have lost over 30 lb so I don’t think that would have worked for me at all. The only thing I can see that makes them different is their constant insistence that they’re different. Otherwise no.

joyjester · 18/07/2020 05:55

No I thought it was awful overpriced twaddle.

joyjester · 18/07/2020 05:57

Don't forget to cancel your trail if you decide you don't want to carry on!

FrameyMcFrame · 18/07/2020 09:36

@Shedtheload
What eating plan are you following to lose all that weight?

I'm basically up for trying anything.

I found MFP quite hard to use, but I am a bit useless with these things.

I'll do the free trial and see if I lose any weight. Off camping after that so it'll probably be hard to stick to anything complicated Confused

I tried the trial recently and it’s not worth the money for the psychological stuff for something that is really just a crapper version of MFP.

Shedtheload · 18/07/2020 10:07

Framey I am mainly using MFP. I eat around 1700 calories a day. I also try to do about 10,000 steps which I log with Fitbit and I try to do yoga as often as I can. In terms of my food, I keep it as simple and healthy as I can, eat stuff that I like the taste of and eat a lot of protein to make sure I’m not hungry. This is what I will be eating today:

B - smoothie made from spinach, half a banana, blueberries, almond milk and a scoop of protein powder:

L - tomato, avocado and prawn salad, slice of rye bread with peanut butter

D - shakshuka (eggs in a tomato sauce), potato wedges. Small scoop of ice cream.

S - high protein Greek yoghurt, raspberries, chopped nuts

It takes a while to see results. I was 203 pounds on 29 March and am now 171.5 pounds. I had a lot of times where I felt frustrated but I kept telling myself that the time would pass anyway whatever I did and that even if I didn’t lose a lot, it was still better than losing nothing or gaining which is what would happen if I didn’t do it.

Good luck, you can do it!

MintyJones · 18/07/2020 11:26

I've done similar to previous poster apart from I use nutricheck as my calorie counter - I find it far simpler than MFP

I've lost almost 3 stone since February 15th. I worked out my calorie allowance properly (I eat 1326 cals a day ) and I walk between 10,000 & 15,000 steps a day. And that's it

Alloverthegrapevine · 18/07/2020 11:33

I cancelled the free trial after seeing the cost to continue and imeadiately got an email reducing the cost to stay by more than half, so if you are thinking of keeping it make sure you cancel first!

muddledmidget · 18/07/2020 12:00

I've just signed up for it again. I've done it before but only the free trial, but since then I've put on another 10lbs so this time I'm going to stick with it I think.

MFP doesn't work for me because the only accountability is to myself. If I have a bad day I just don't log, and if my weight goes up I stop using it.

I'm hoping the price will encourage me to continue with noom! Alternatively I just need to find someone who will nag me and not let me stop when work gets busy/I feel low and who doesn't charge £30/month

Iamclearlyamug · 18/07/2020 19:25

I started the free trial but cancelled it as soon as I realised it wanted to limit me to 1200 calories a day - I’d pass out if I only had that! I average 25-30k steps a day doing a lot manual labour and lifting. Not sure it takes things like that into account, so I’ve gone back to 1500 and calorie counting

TwoBlueFish · 18/07/2020 19:38

I keep getting the ads but want it to be more upfront about pricing and what you get.

I’ve been doing MFP for 7 weeks and have lost 5kgs (11lbs). I’ve got a long way to go but I am actually logging everything even if I have a bad day. My calorie allowance in MFP is 1510 per day but I usually end up closer to 1400 and don’t feel hungry. I’ve never stuck to a diet but this actually feels quite easy and it really has made me make better choices.

FrameyMcFrame · 19/07/2020 19:15

@Iamclearlyamug
You get more calories the more steps you do... so I had 1600 today as I went for a run and went over 7000 steps.

I've lost 2 lb so far so maybe it's worth it, anything that works to lose this weight,

I'm going to have to go and buy new clothes for fatter me otherwise Confused

Iamclearlyamug · 20/07/2020 08:20

@FrameyMcFrame it didn’t in my case, one day I did more than 40000 steps and went over by about 300 calories, then got a message from the ‘helper’ person to ask how she could support me to stay within my calorie allowance! Tbh I cancelled there and then, I’d walked almost the equivalent of a marathon that day!
