Learning to eat healthily support thread

questionssquestions · 10/07/2020 14:47

I don't know what the name for this sort of eating is. 'Healthy' means different things to different people. Maybe 'normal', but most people in the UK are overweight, so normal is not ideal either.

Anyway, a lot of us need support in learning how to eat better, so I'm hoping there might be people who want to join this thread. This is not a weight loss thread, it is a healthy eating thread.

We try to:

  • Eat 5+ fruit and veg a day
  • Eat balanced meals (some starchy foods, fruit, veg, protein, dairy)
  • Enjoy treats/desserts/puddings etc.
  • Maximise our consumption of unprocessed and minimally processed foods
  • Minimise our consumption of ultraprocessed foods
  • Try to cook from scratch where we can
  • Be mindful of portion sizes
  • Build enjoyable exercise into our daily lives

We don't:

  • Exclude food groups
  • Talk of good/bad foods or being good/bad
  • Calorie count, fast, detox, or join weight loss clubs
  • Talk about our weight or clothes size

I'm hoping this can be a place for support, sharing of ideas and favourite recipes etc.

I had forgotten that about cooked tomatoes Shrodinger. But it’s reminded me that mushrooms will absorb vitamin D if left on the windowsill for a few hours before eating.

B: PB Granola, yoghurt, grapes
L: Tuna melt on seeded, apple
D: Ham, egg & chips
S: 3 biscuits

OMG no vegetables eaten today. Tomorrow, I must make soup!! Also going to try a nutty granola recipe if I can find a low sugar one.

Wildernesstips · 31/08/2020 13:16

Made the nutty granola using this recipe, but without the dried fruit & seeds www.elizabethrider.com/easy-healthy-homemade-granola-recipe/

B: Avocado on brown sourdough toast
L: Vegetable soup, bread - soup was a “bottom of the fridge style soup”
D: Roast pork, potatoes, carrots, peas, beans & a weird garlicky cabbage

Bravely made a vegetarian mousaka today. Well, sort of a mousaka anyway, as I ended up stopping it with red Leicester. It looked terrible, but actually tasted fine. Next time I would cube the aubergine instead of slicing. Everyone ate it apart from dd1, who could not get over the appearance. We had it with some carrot and oat muffins I made yesterday. Not made my own bread in years, but fresh bread is lovely. Bread maker definitely on my aspiration list.

GlumyGloomer · 01/09/2020 19:20

*topping. Auto correct, sigh

GlumyGloomer · 01/09/2020 19:21

Carrot at oat rolls that should say. Never post while getting tantrumed at, lol

Wildernesstips · 01/09/2020 19:42

Yesterday:
B: Nutty granola, grapes, yoghurt, passion fruit
L: Poached egg, ham, chard on seeded toast
D: Fish pie, kale, peas
S: Gold bar, red wine

Today:
B: Avocado on seeded toast
L: Vegetable soup, strawberries, raspberries
D: Red Thai curry (inc. sweet potato, aubergine, pepper),slice bread

Glumygloomer I’m not a big aubergine fan but did enjoy them today. I think you’re right - the big slices can be off putting. I think I’m going to try not to have starchy carbs at every meal, however I’m such a bread fiend.

Today:
B- omelette (2eggs, 1 small tomato, slice of chorizo, smoked cheese)
L - salad with lighter salad cheese and dash of crispy fried onion
S - kohlrabi and cheese
D - spaghetti courgetti & veggie sauce
S2 - ryvita rye, sauerkraut and beef rashers

Lots of cheese today😂 Which reminded me to tell you all about Eatlean cheese. It's really low fat, high in protein cheese. I checked and it's only milk and salt as cheese is. It has 2% salt which is not bad. It's calories where it exells.
Edam - 324 cal
Eatlean - 169 cal
It reminds me of edam rather than cheddar and I use it edam way. It's not something I would cut a piece of to munch on, but it has been a saviour for my pasta dishes! I like them cheesy. I also like my omeletts cheesy. It's fine into these things and allows me to have calories left for full fat cheese to munch on in snack timeGrin Also I just tried the smoked one and it's really nice.

I made 'fish pie burgers' today (which was basically a fancy fish cake) and it included boiled eggs. I've seen this also in an actual fish pie recipe I made recently, and both times I thought that was weird and left them out. I'm fairly new to eating fish, so not had many fish pies. Is this normal? It seemed like a totally unnecessary extra faff to me, and fish and egg seems like an odd combo, although I suppose I use egg for binding fish cakes.

drspouse · 03/09/2020 19:48

Hard boiled egg is nice in fish pie. As are peas! Both normal.

GlumyGloomer · 03/09/2020 21:17

Peas I can see, but egg just seems odd for some reason. I'd need a whole extra pan to boil the eggs...
I'll try it next time. Dh would probably approve, he sticks eggs with everything.

Wildernesstips · 05/09/2020 12:48

I love egg in a fish pie!

Went for a run this morning and have also been eating healthily. So all good. Received 2 bags of sweet potatoes in my shop as a replacement for the 2 loose ones I ordered, but I do love them. However, any sweet potato recipes will be gratefully received.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 05/09/2020 19:04

Oooh. Nice ideas here.

I am boring today and proper carby.
B: rye bread, egg, eggwhite
L: homemade broth, rice noodles, carrots
S: yogurt and summer fruits
D: egg fried rice with fish
S2: ryvita rye, quark, chives, chorizo

Wildernesstips · 12/09/2020 16:00

How is everyone doing? I feel like I’m having a good day with 4 of my 5 a day already eaten and a nice 40 minute walk in the bag.

Still have a glut of sweet potatoes though!

GlumyGloomer · 16/09/2020 23:51

Hi Wilderness
I've been focusing on decluttering for a while, so thinking a bit less about food. Generally I've been snacking too much, but otherwise doing alright. Our weekly shopping not only has to be 2 days late due to no slots, but was also missing all the meat and fish. I'm quite pleased that I had enough bits in the freezer for us to get by until next week's delivery.
General cooking has been fine, but I'm not doing well with baking at the moment. I made a half wholemeal ginger cake, which stuck to the tin (my fault, should have used a loose bottomed one), and even when made into cake pops was pronounced too gingery by my family. I still have a bag of cake crumbs in the freezer too. I've also discovered that macadamia nuts do not belong in granola.
Quesadillas tomorrow though, which is always a win Smile
