Sugar and belly fat

Has anyone who has successfully given up sugar noticed a significant reduction in belly fat? I've been trying to reduce calories and exercise but I've got a really flabby stomach and wondering if completely cutting out sweets would help me shift the fat around that area (I've got a massive sweet tooth and eat chocolate every day). I'm a size 12 and 5"7, got half a stone to get me back to pre-pregnancy weight so not loads but I'm alarmed at how much soft, squidgy fat I'm carrying around my waist at the moment Sad

Losing body fat is all about burning more calories that you consume. You can't spot reduce fat so you just need to make sure you know how much you're eating vs how much you're burning to Iose weight.

I stopped eating sugar a few years ago and yes, I lost my belly fat. I didn't stop because of my weight, I was a healthy weight (still am), also, the weight loss was gradual, I did no exercise beyond walking to school and back. For me the diet change has been permanent, I found a good balance.

I stopped eating sugar after reading an interesting article about it in the paper (long read: guardian). Might be worth a google if you're interested. I found the I Quit Sugar books fairly helpful at first, but found the recipes mostly a bit yuck. It's definitely easier to do if you make meals from scratch. Good luck! Smile

That's helpful thank you both @BadgeronaMoped did you cut out fruit too or only refined sugar?

I think “a calorie is a calorie” has been pretty much debunked.

I cut fruit out completely for ages, these days I try to eat a piece a day, sometimes more if something I like is in season. This no-sugar thing seems to have worked for me long-term because I have found decent alternatives to all my favourite foods. I find I'm not as hungry as I was before I cut it out.

I find some sugar quitters a bit holier than thou, I definitely still crave sugar, especially cake Grin
