Do you weigh yourself everyday...

And if you do, do you see a little bit off every day?

I've started my diet on Monday (calorie counting) and I'm not sure whether to weigh weekly or daily. I have weighed daily so far but I think it's making me a bit despondent when nothing has changed. And I know I'm only on day 5 but I'm being impatient and was hoping to see something by now.

Definitely don't weigh daily, as well as the reasons you have mentioned, the numbers are essentially meaningless, little things like a glass of water in, emptying your bladder, how big your last meal was, how long ago all make a big difference over short timescales. You will see your weight going up, down and all over the place, what you want to see is a meaningful, gradual decrease over time.

I weigh myself at the same time, on the same day of the week (wednesday morning, after a shower, before getting dressed and breakfast) as it eliminates as far as possible all of the non-constant factors. The 9 month graph the showed a linear 2 stone weight loss was immensely satisfying to see.

BurtsBeesKnees · 03/07/2020 12:47

When I'm dieting I only weigh myself once a week. That gives me a more accurate indication of my true weight.

I really have to stop myself weighing each day, especially on Fridays. Because if I've lost I think - woo hoo and blow it all over the weekend, if I've stayed the same or gained, I get all fed up and eat to console myself - lose lose situation

BurtsBeesKnees · 03/07/2020 12:48

I weigh on a Monday morning. Usually have a roast dinner Sunday and no booze, I get up, go to the loo and then weigh before I get in the shower.

I weigh myself daily and definitely don't see a little bit off every day. Some days there's no change, some days it goes up, and some days I drop a whole pound overnight.

Those fluctuations are the very reason I don't weigh weekly. Suppose you lost 1lb. If you happened to weigh on "low" day at the start of the week and a "high" day at the end of the week, you might appear to have lost nothing at all. Conversely, you happened to weigh on "high" day at the start and a "low" day at the end, it might look like you'd lost twice as much as you really had. Even weighing at the same time every week isn't foolproof - it can still vary depending on where you are in your menstrual cycle, whether your dinner the night before contained a lot of salt, etc. By checking every day, I can get a feel for what my real weight is, versus the more extreme fluctuations.

My partner weighs every day, but I puts into an app so it graphs it.

It goes up and down by about three pounds but on a downward trajectory. 2 stone lost since lockdown. Only another two stone to go! He's doing very well.

Skyliner001 · 03/07/2020 14:54

Hood luck! He didn't see changes until about 10 days in but then it was steady.

gotothecooler · 03/07/2020 15:00

I weigh monthly. It works well for me. Weekly weighing had me jumping on and off the scales nearly every day and as you can see, it's not helpful.

LBOCS2 · 03/07/2020 15:04

I weigh daily and then graph it so I can see a trend, which does show a steady loss even though it fluctuates wildly day by day.

PurpleDaisies · 03/07/2020 15:06

No. Once a week here and not at all if it’s period week. I get obsessed otherwise and it’s easier to see losses if you’re not weighing every day.
Close to target, I use inches not weight as a better guide.

OneForTheRoadThen · 03/07/2020 15:06

I weigh daily and put it into my Fitbit app which calculates a weekly average. I definitely don't lose everyday, my pattern at the moment seems to be maintain for a week, drop 3-4 lbs the following week. It's always a downward trend though and the weekly average helps you see that.

MirandaWest · 03/07/2020 15:08

I’m weighing and measuring once a week

withgraceinmyheart · 03/07/2020 18:17

I weigh myself every day. The only times i haven't is when I've been gaining lots of weight and I don't want to face it 🙈 so it's important for me for accountability.

It fluctuates a bit, and you have to bear that in mind and not get hung up on it. I'm glad I do though because if I weighed weekly and happened to get a random heavy day I'd be upset and think I needed to change something, but weighing every day I can see the trend.

Personal preference really.

TippledPink · 03/07/2020 18:19

I weigh every day- if I had a big meal the night before I can be a couple of pounds heavier in the morning. I only compare the weight from the same day the week before though. It goes up and down. If you can't handle that, don't weigh every day.

Beetie1 · 03/07/2020 20:00

A bit of a mixed bag in answers! I think either way I need to have more patience. Smile

I think it's quite personal - I weigh every day, straight after getting up, after a wee, but I have digital scales that are accurate to 0.2lbs so you do see a drop even if small. I did it for a while with scales only measuring to the lb and found it really disheartening - as a pp said, you could be as extreme as eg X st 5.4lb Day 1 and drop to 4.6lb Day 2 but your scales show X st 5lb both days.
I found it useful seeing and learning to understand daily fluctuations and also an incentive not to cheat, but I totally understand why others find it too much, particularly if you're not going to see the little drops.

Beetie1 · 05/07/2020 09:45

Another question for you all - if you do waist/hip measurements and/or take progress pictures, how often do you do this? I was thinking of doing it for every half stone lost (I have a few to lose) Does that sound ok?

Also I'm now on day 7 and the scales did finally move in the right direction and I've lost 3lbs! I really want to achieve the weight loss this time so I want to keep myself motivated. I have 2 stone to lose to achieve a healthy bmi.

I weigh daily. It fluctuates and can be a bit disheartening when it goes back up but I get to see the fluctuations which I don’t think I would if I weighed weekly. I also think it makes me more accountable. Like pp I have an app that puts it in a graph so I can see the downward trend.

GiveMyHeadPeaceffs · 05/07/2020 18:54

I weigh daily and work out my weekly average. I think it's interesting to show how much it fluctuates. I follow Team RH (they're on Facebook) and they're brilliant at explaining why you should weigh daily and strictly track your calories. It's a really good system with no hard sell and no not-allowed foods. I've lost half a stone in two weeks which I'm pretty happy with.

didireallysaythat · 06/07/2020 22:54

Weird question but do you leave you scales in the same place? Mine are under the counter in the bathroom, I always put them in the same place and I know that the first weight I record is too low. The second and third are usually the same as each other. If I move them to another room the numbers are very different.

I always put the scales on a single tile on the bathroom floor so I know it's on a level surface. Never weighed myself anywhere else in the house!
