My bastard scales

I can weigh myself, then if I don’t like what I see I’ll step off and step back on and I’ll be 3 pounds lighter. Should scales be more accurate than this? They are digital Salter brand ones and I’m using them on hard flooring. It’s really annoying me as I’ve been doing really well with my diet, I’m only losing a pound a week which is fine until I step on and I’ve gone back 3 weeks!

Mine are the same, total buggers. I can step on them, be what I think is a great weight, get back on and they’re 6lbs higher. Wtf is the point of scales that don’t even work?!

LockdownLyra · 02/07/2020 10:15

6 pounds is even more annoying, I think I’d throw mine out the window if they did that, such bastards!

Not sure if your joking but no, digital scales shouldn’t do that. Have you tried changing the battery? Worse case chuck it.

bluefoxmug · 02/07/2020 12:55

are they on a soft or uneven surface?
that would make scales inacurate.
put them on a hard and even surface and that shouldn't happen anymore.

Shedtheload · 02/07/2020 12:57

I have to step on my scales, step off, wait for it to go to zero, then step on again to weigh. Not because they’re faulty but because that’s what it says in the manual. Not salter ones though but they are digital ones. Are you sure that yours aren’t ones like that? If not, get new ones

HelpMeh · 02/07/2020 13:00

I find digital scales extremely unreliable - even when I bought a £100 set!!

I now use cheap, analog scales and replace every few years when they look grim.

LockdownLyra · 02/07/2020 13:02

No I’m not joking! I have them on hard flooring, and I do the step on to get the zero before I start, I tried changing the battery a while ago but I’ll try that again. Good to know they are not all like this though, maybe I should just get some new ones but these ones weren’t exactly the cheapest, they are Salter ones.

My digital scales need calibrating every time I use them. I store them upright and when I use them, you have to discount the first reading as it is usually about 2lbs more than the true weight. Then let it reset and step on them again for the true reading. Google calibrating bathroom scales.

LockdownLyra · 02/07/2020 13:04

£100 scales! Maybe I’ll go back to analog ones too. To be honest, my digital food scales vary too. I can weigh something to an exact weight, walk away and come back and they’ll have lost/gained a few grams!

My digital scales are shit. They can vary by 10kg depending on where I stand.

LockdownLyra · 02/07/2020 13:06

Ooh Saz42 you might be onto something there, I store mine upright too! So the second (lighter) weight is the correct one? Phew, hope so!

With mine, yes, the first reading is heavier. I glance away at that point!

Torvi · 02/07/2020 13:12

I've had more than one set of digital scales that did this. I've just bought some Salter analogue ones like they have at the GP surgery and they're consistent.

LockdownLyra · 02/07/2020 13:13

Thank God for that! I’ll google calibrating them thanks!

Lozz22 · 02/07/2020 13:58

Ha ha my Mum's scales do that!! I've found turning them on but not stepping on them so they turn off then turning them on again usually gives me the proper reading. Although sometimes I like to see what the difference is from both readings. My favourite scales so far have been the ones I stepped on at someone else's house. I was half my body weight on them ones 😂

Bemystarlord · 02/07/2020 14:30

I have the same issue with salter ones! Will be looking into calibrating them too!!

gavisconismyfriend · 02/07/2020 23:36

Oooh! I haven’t been calibrating mine. 🤞for a good number when I calibrate them in the morning!

morefun · 06/07/2020 16:26

Yes, you have to calibrate! I have uneven floors anyway and have to check several times on the flattest spot I can find!

Astrabees · 07/07/2020 16:25

I have some all singing all dancing Salter scales, I daren't weigh myself on them because DH's weight can be up or down 4lb in a few minutes when he uses them. I now have a set that cost £12 from Argos, very simple digital scales, just step on and it gives your weight. These seem far more reliable.
