I would go with what you enjoy rather than what is better. You are more liable to stick with it. And that is the goal long term and especially if your wanting to keep the weight off after you finish. Find something you love.

I’m sure I would loose more if I spent an hour in the gym but I hate that place. But put me in a pool and I will swim for ages. If all I could do was the gym I would have given up ages ago

I’m no expert although I’ve done swimming and couch to 5k in the past which I’ve enjoyed. I do know that exercise alone doesn’t tend to help you lose weight so you’d need to combine it with a diet plan.

Weight loss is 90% what you put in your mouth and 10% exercise. Keeping that in mind I would second the advice that you do something you really enjoy. Exercises that build lean muscle and tone up can help drop a dress size. I love exercising. I run, I box, i do weights and Pilates. And it makes me very, very hungry so I have to be mindful of what I eat otherwise I end up over eating.

Walking; it's free and it's easy (for the majority of people). I aim for between 10k-15k steps a day. I've a sedentary job so I take the longer route to the kitchen and toilets, park my car up the road rather than in the car park and go for a walk at lunchtime. I also jog/walk on the spot in the kitchen when I'm making dinner or a cuppa.

And totally agree with the PP, it really is important what you put into your mouth.

Unless you do loads of high intensity exercise, it won't have much effect on weightloss, that's mostly down to what you eat. Exercise burns surprisingly few calories, for example you need to run for about 45 mins to burn off a Mars bar.

For me, the main benefits to exercise with regard to weightloss are that, if exercise is important to you, you want to eat more healthily in order to support the exercise and all the time you're out exercising you're not on the sofa eating crisps.

Walking. I lost 5 stone by walking and eating healthily. I didn't cut anything out just ate less of it. Sadly since my life has become very stressful I've put half back on.

I'll always shout about weightlifting on here. It's the best thing ever.

Walking is boring IMO- You'd have to power walk for hours to see any difference. Weightlifting burns more calories than cardio and for a longer period after exercise.

With weights you'll see results very quickly, and you'll be amazed how quickly you lift heavier and heavier- its addictive and really enjoyable.

I go on my turbo because I can watch a box set while I cycle so do it every day. That coupled with weights afterwards and 16 8 have lost 2 stone and maintaining

Despite what many say, exercise and an active lifestyle have a huge impact on weight loss. If I am sedentary, my TDEE is around 1800, ie the amount I can eat and maintain weight. If I exercise and do at least 10000 steps a day, it goes up to 2400. That’s a difference of 600 calories a day, ie over a pound a week. Therefore, my weight loss is significantly faster than if I did calorie restriction only and doing strength training as well as cardio builds muscle and increases metabolism. Doing nothing and eating very low calories will most likely lead to muscle being lost as well as fat and over time will slow down your metabolism.

Shedtheload · 28/06/2020 09:27

Also, again despite what people say, the total average amount people eat hasn’t changed drastically since the 1960s when people used to eat quite a high fat and high carb diet. What has changed is the amount of physical activity which has led to an obesity crisis.
I noticed it myself when I got a job where I no longer had a long walking commute where I did at least 10000 steps a day. Yes, I was eating too much but no more than before (as I’d always suffered with binge eating). The difference was the level of activity and I gained 3 stone.
The research also shows that while you can lose weight without exercise, keeping it off is highly unlikely unless you are active and surely keeping it off is what we all want.

In terms of type of exercise, I recommend walking or jogging daily to get up to 10000 steps, yoga and a bit of weight training if you have weights at home.

Walking is underrated.
I have been power walking during the lockdown period and have lost a lot of weight and toned up my legs, stomach and behind
As others have said, diet is the most important for weight loss. However, if one wants to maintain that loss , exercise is the key.
