What happens if I eat 1000 calories a day?

Until I lose about a stone and then go back up to the 1200 calories a day that I'm already having? Will I put the weight back on or maintain it? My BMI is 23 so I'll probably struggle to shift a stone to begin with.

Just moving this for you, @Willowdaisyholly.

Microwaveoven · 26/06/2020 17:31

You will probably maintain it. Why do you need to shift a stone?

Willowdaisyholly · 26/06/2020 18:06

@Microwaveoven thanks for replying, I don't officially need to, I just feel a bit chubby round the edges. For various reasons, I stopped doing much exercise for a while so that hasn't helped!

Depends on your BMR and TDEE numbers. Eating 1000 calories a day unless you’re 4 ft 10 is way below what your body needs to function. You’re also unlikely to keep it up for long. If you eat low calories for a prolonged time your body adjusts and becomes more efficient making it much harder to lose weight.
Can you get back into exercise instead of restricting calories? Way healthier and you’re likely to get better results.

Have a read of the Fast800 by Dr Michael Moseley. 800 cals a Day, for anything from 2-12 weeks. You maintain your BMR (metabolic rate) by eating low carb and 50/60g protein a day. I am come up to the end of week 9, 2 stone off. Lots of us on the BSD thread in weight loss if you need chat and support!

MortyFide · 27/06/2020 06:22

I'm eating 900 cals a day to lose weight OP, but then my BMI is 36 so I need to!

I don't think a VLCD is recommended for anyone other than the very obese (BMI 30+), and even then medical advice is always recommended. Ideally you should be eating at least your basic metabolic rate, which depending on your weight and height could be around 1300 or so. Otherwise I think you risk losing lean muscle as well as fat.

That said...I can't imagine you could do much harm if you did it for a week or so, then bumped back up to 1200. But do use an online calculator to establish your Basic Metabolic Rate, and your Total Daily Estimated Expenditure. Fresh thinking on healthy eating seems to support short periods of very low calorie diets, so as long as you are not prone to disordered eating you could try it. Be careful, good luck!

Just seen your post @fufulina - interesting, I might pop along! What's BSD though...?!

Shedtheload · 27/06/2020 06:31

fufulina that diet is for those who are obese, particularly diabetics and prediabetics. Not for people with a BMI of 23. It’s unlikely to provide sufficient fuel for someone who doesn’t have a large amount of fat to lose.

Shedtheload · 27/06/2020 06:32

BSD is blood sugar diet

fufulina · 27/06/2020 06:33

It’s for anyone with a BMI over 25 - there are exceptions, pregnant, breastfeeding, under 16. Have you read the book?

MortyFide · 27/06/2020 07:12

Thanks @Shedtheload Smile

I'm doing Exante myself. Almost finished week 5, 16 lbs down. Bit slow for a VCLD but I'm menopausal and on HRT, don't know if that makes a difference.

TwilightPeace · 27/06/2020 07:15

If you lost a stone what would your BMI be?
If you want to tone up do a bit of exercise rather than starving yourself.

Shedtheload · 27/06/2020 07:35

fufulina the OP says her BMI is 23.

TheNavigator · 27/06/2020 07:43

I would recommend exercise rather than dieting if your BMI is 23 & you just feel a bit chubby around the edges. What works for me is doing couch to 25k, I now run 3-4 times a week anything between 5-10km. When I come back I do loads of stretches. I also do just 20 minutes 5 times a week of core, legs or glutes work. In the 3 months of lockdown that I have been doing this my body has really firmed up. I've also lost some weight, but that is secondary. I feel fantastic and look better in my clothes without having to starve myself. So find some exercise that you love and stick with it for at least 3 months to start really seeing changes, is my advice.

fufulina · 27/06/2020 07:48

Ah! Didn’t see that. Perhaps 5:2? Intermittent fasting? Or time restricted eating? The jury is out on running for weight loss. Psychologically, we tend to reward ourselves for the effort, and offset the calories used. Exercise is brilliant for mental health though.

I’d shake things up with some fasting. Read Jason Fung. He has some brilliant content about fasting for health, weight loss and maintenance. I’d also consider low carb. Increasingly, the health advice to eat high carb low fat is seen as a critical factor behind the obesity epidemic.

There’s a million ways to lose weight and keep it off - I’d do some reading and some experimenting.
