Joe wicks isn't working...... thinking about going back to Slimming World

Hey alll, I'm new here.

For the last two months I have been doing to 90 days plan by Joe Wicks. Now here's where it gets confusing so bare with me.

I joined the plan because I wanted to lose 2.5st and get at 9st. And I've actually gained weight since starting the plan and I'm not liking at one bit, apart from that food and workouts.

But...here's my problem, I really want to go back to slimming world. I originally joined in '13 at 10 st 2. And then got to target, went on holiday 3 years later and put 4lb back in and it went up from there. So I tried WW and that didn't work. So here I am almost 7 years later STILL trying to get to 9st.
I’ve been told in the last two months that “it (weight) shouldn’t matter anymore”. “I’m pre diabetic and I don’t worry anymore”

yeah well I do. And always will worry about my health and weight. I’m not happy and feel fat. All the time

In those 7 years I've only recently become pre diabetic, relating to my weight. Which is the main reason why I wanted to do the 90 day plan because I thought it might be different. And I'm utterly disappointed and I'm only finishing it off because it's a waste of money otherwise.

I've even re downloaded the Slimming world app and I'm ready to start my journey when the Joe Wicks plan is over. I miss the groups etc.

I just need to helpful and kind advice. Nothing mean or horrible please as I'm already depressed enough as it is.

Should I stick it out and see what my end result is or go to slimming world (which I know works for me weight loss wise.

Have you lost inches? Or gained totally

thenewaveragebear1983 · 22/06/2020 13:04

If you're prediabetic why not try a low carb plan like The blood sugar diet or fast800. Slimming world being low fat and high carb isn't going to yield great results for you unfortunately unless you really go low carb within the plan (eg SP days)

I would do the blood sugar diet or join rh fitness. Much cheaper than sw and you can eat everything-in moderation. She works but I find it too restrictive for real life.

I’ve actually gained weight. I’m now nearly 12st. Something I’ve strived to not do. Although I’ve lost a few inches. It’s not what I was hoping for.

I’m following with interest.... in C2 W1 in the plan myself, didn’t lose what I expected to in C1. I read other people’s accounts that suggest best weight loss is C3 so please do finish it (and let us know how you get on!!) have you read the book obesity code? It was recommended on a thread and I found it really useful.

Jo wicks is great for exercise but his recipes always look quite weight inducing. A lot of people also make the mistake of over compensating with rewards and treats. A mix of healthy eating and exercise is the best way. Inches are more important than weight. I lost less than a stone by mixing exercise and low carb but dress size went from 16 to a 10!

enjoyingscience · 22/06/2020 13:43

If you’ve lost inches but gained weight that’s not a bad thing. Have you properly measured your body fat? (With callipers)

By all means go back to whichever diet you fee best on, but I’d think losing fat is more important than weight.

BasinHaircut · 22/06/2020 13:44

I’m not sure what the plan is actually suggesting that you eat but I have heard that he doesn’t encourage calorie control just eating ‘healthier’ or whatever.

This is where I imagine it falls down as it’s all about energy deficit. Does he give you a calorie allowance?

It’s great that he tries to encourage exercise as well as diet but weight loss is primarily achieved in the kitchen and you just don’t burn as many calories as you think by exercising.

Diet for weight loss, exercise for fitness/health.

Shedtheload · 22/06/2020 13:53

I think JW is largely low carb, especially at the beginning and the exercise is quite intense and could put stress on the body, which could actually impede weight loss. It sounds like you’d much rather do SW so don’t force yourself to continue if it’s not working. I also agree with others that you could try a blood sugar diet, perhaps combined with walking, to try to bring your weight down and then as you get lighter, maybe increase the intensity of the exercise.

Maybe your focus should be waist measurement rather than weight as it’s this that’s one of the prime risk factors for diabetes.

HattieMid2 · 22/06/2020 13:57

Try fasting! It has changed my life. I started at 16:8 and firmly on OMAD now

FusionChefGeoff · 22/06/2020 14:41

OMAD used to be called an Eating Disorder.....

Shedtheload · 22/06/2020 15:02

Fusion I kind of see what you mean in that it’s definitely not for everyone and most would find it a real challenge. I think something more mild like 16:8 is fine though and not unhealthy.

I had a terrible experience with 5:2 which I personally feel encourages disordered eating. The disclaimer that it shouldn’t be attempted by anyone with a history of disordered eating is a give-away (and personally I think most obese people have disordered eating). However, I know that many rave about it and fair enough if it works for them. I do wince when people say they are doing 5:2 and only eating 1200 on non-fasting days which actually is disordered eating and is contrary to the 5:2 diet.

If you've lost inches and gained a bit of weight it's probably muscle gained and fat lost. I would try not to worry too much about weight. His meals are quite low carb, high protein and veg which promotes muscle building and fat loss.

IndiaMay · 22/06/2020 15:30

Also my mum did joe wicks, her weight stayed largely the same but she went from a size 12 to a size 8

IndiaMay · 22/06/2020 15:32

Also, SW tends to encourage a lot of artificial sweeteners which I thought was asking for diabetes (but could be wrong)

BasinHaircut · 22/06/2020 15:47

The thing with SW is that it had the potential to encourage quite a healthy diet if you actually cook. I’ve done it before and it has always been effective but I don’t eat muller lights and mug shots and their chocolate bars (the name escapes me). But I do have the advantage of having trained as a chef and a (very old) degree in nutrition which your average SW member doesn’t.

Parkmama · 22/06/2020 16:32

I have done slimming world, weight watchers and 5:2 and I think 5:2 is the best. I find it to be the one routine I can stick to that delivers the best results. There are no special food groups to avoid, i don't have to do loads of planning each week or write down everything I'm eating - all things I lose patience with after a while. I feel like I eat fairly normally for 5 days and then I'm very restricted for 2 days to a 1 x 500 calorie meal on each of them and that feels sustainable. It's not effortless, fasting all day until dinner takes some strength but it does get easier the more you do it. I usually lose between 1-2lbs a week if not more. The fasting reduces my appetite slightly on my normal eating days which also helps as I'm a dreadful grazer, I eat emotionally and I'm addicted to crisps!!
