Has anyone with long term significant weight issues sought a therapist?

And if it was successful, could you share or PM me a recommendation?

Having been overweight or dieting since the age of 8, I realise that I need to get my head fixed to get my body fixed.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

I don't have any advice but I would like to see the answers you get in case the help me too.

I let my weight creep up to something like 117kg/18st+ after giving up on dieting because being hungry makes me fall apart mentally. happily I am currently getting my weight under control and have found that I am managing ok, but I know that the vast majority of people who lose a lot of weight do tend to put it all back on, and I need to work out how to break my association between overeating and feeling good emotionally.

Not much help to you but I honestly think that is the only way I will lose weight permanently. I am 5 stone over weight do I have yo yo’d 2-3 stone on and off for years now.

Thanks both. Our stories sound similar.

I am aged 53 and remember being weighed at primary school regularly in front of the class (everyone was).

I was put on diet pills at the age of 8 (blows my mind now).

I want to seek out a weight loss therapist to finally address the root of the problem rather than the symptoms.

Of course you should, I think people are very understanding that being severely underweight is generally down to a mental or physical health issue, but overweight doesn't get the same recognition because people tend to consider it a choice, which is isn't, always.

Two of my sisters have had eating disorder treatment, one for anorexia and the other for binge eating, they're two sides of the same coin.

Two really good books while you wait are ,Fat is a Feminist Issue and Brain Over Binge (if that's an issue you experience).

PS - your body doesn't need fixing, it's an amazing machine as it is, and for most women I know who turn to food for comfort, it's so often because they spend so much time being strong and doing things for others, and this is the only little indulgence or release they allow themselves. Be kind to yourself!

Thanks also for sharing your family experiences.

I have been given a name of a therapist from someone I respect, and have emailed, so fingers crossed I am at the start of addressing something that will lead to long term health.
