Slimming World - does it work, and how?!

Hi,

I'm desperately trying to shift at least a stone but I just got back from holiday and it's all gone wrong!

I think SW is about the only diet I haven't tried but my mum knows someone who lost loads of weight on it. I'd only be doing green days as am veggie, but I don't get it, how can you eat all the bread you want and lose weight? How does that work?

Can someone explain how you do it (as a veggie) as I'm going to have to go it alone, DP works shifts so any regular weekly commitment is a no go.

Any advice appreciated!

Staples on a Slimming World green day would be pasta, potatoes, rice, beans, pulses, fresh fruit and vegetables. Bread can be eaten, but in very limited amounts. Quorn is a free food if you like it.

Have a look on their website. They have some sample menus on there which will give you an idea of what you can eat.

Ahaaaa...cheers, just been looking at that, looks great. But I really don't get how you can eat as much rice etc as you want and not put on weight? Does it really work?

It's all about food optimising

You can eat as much rice as you like & not gain weight... I am proof of that! I have lost almost 2 stone with sw!

There is a sw thread on here, go & have a read & hopefully you will get the general idea of what sw is all about

I lost 2.5 stones on it. It does work.

You get certain foods that are "free" and you can eat as much of those as you like, other foods are classed as a "healthy extra" and you must have 1 or 2 of those each day - that's things like milk, cereal. Everything else has a syn value and you can have 10-15 syns per day.

My personal trainer also does nutrition as is excellent at explaining all this,

basically, it works of the principle that your body cant digest protein and carbs at the same time effectively

so in a meal and preferably in a day you should focus mainly only on one food group ie protein with small supplements of carbs etc added in.

If you ate loads of rice but no meat youre body could work solely on digesting the rice - it would be better NOT to eat the rice as it is starchy and swells in your system but thats another story..

ALso, drink water before you eat but not after a meal because it will flush away all the enzymes etc your body produces to breakdown a meal.

He also says you can eat as much fat as you like (within reason) as long as you dont have sugar (and remember there are lots of hidden sugars in ready meals etc) and you will lose weight because your body can metabolise fat but only stores sugar for energy.

My trainer is the font of all knowledge...

the thing is that with plain rice/plain bread/plain pasta with no butter, rich sauces etc - there really comes a point where you are too full to eat any more.

I lost weight with SW (long time ago now though) but once I ate 8 Miller Lights in one day.... I still didn't gain anything but I have to say I didn't lose any weight that week!

It works! I lost 3.5 stone on SW and went from size 14/16 to size 8. I do green days (I'm not a vegetarian as such, but really do prefer not eating meat). Fill up on pasta, veg, fruit and not feel hungry. Now maintaining at target weight.

chopchopbusybusy · 17/09/2007 09:38

It worked for me !

It works by encouraging you to fill up on foods that satisfy your appetite, but are relatively low calorie. Just don't cheat by having more healthy extras or syns than they say and you will be pleasantly surprised. I was sceptical at first, but have a go with the menu planner thingy.

Cheers everyone! I'm going to try to do it myself without joining (£20 per month to do it online!) so am just going to make loads of vegetable based stews and sauces with no fat, to have with rice/pasta.

Are all pulses free? And would 1 pitta bread count as your bread for the day?
