Reductil

Hello
Newbie here... I have lost three stones through the doctor. I had to lose a bit of weight on my own, which I did. I had my vitals checked out - BP etc... and she gave me a script for reductil. These are mainly subutermine and supress the appetite. I have been on them since Feb this year. I think you need to be under a certain age and have a regular BP. You have to have it all checked out first and once on the tabs, go every fortnight for a few months, then every month. I have found it a great help and have been lucky to fit into the catagory. I was also offered the "other one" (I'm sorry, can't remember what its called - oily something) which really isn't very pleasant at all.
So long as you lose weight with reductil, you can stay on it for upto a year. I had a three week break from it and still lost 2kg in a month.
If you are "good" then the weight comes off pretty fast at first... not too fast of course, but you do notice a difference over a couple of months.
I'm still on the tabs and enjoying feeling much better about myself. I still have a "weigh" to go but these are certainly helping. Don't forget the exercise though, that helps too.

hi Jojo, welcome to mumsnet!!
Thanks for your post. Keep up the good work.

Hi jojo - what's reductil? As I am very interested

Cadbury · 07/10/2004 19:58

Hi jojo. I was very interested to read this. Are you in the uk? On the same proviso that I loose a bit of weight myself first, my doctor has put me on Orlistat (Xenocal). I've been taking them for nearly 3 weeks and weight is coming off nicely. The side effects aren't too horrific provided I stick toi a low fat diet. I asked my GP about the appetite surpressant onesand he said they didn't prescribe them any more. Not sure why.
Many congratulations on loosing 3 stone. What an achievement! My ultimate goal is to loose 7 stone but we'll take each marker as it comes! I have a weigh in with my doctor just before Christmas (better that than after it!). Keep us informed as to how you are doing. Oh, and welcome to mumsnet.

Reductil is a drug similar to, but not the same as Prozac. It was discovered by a drug company looking for a new anti-depressant. Didn't work for that but they found that as a side effect patients lost weight and was trailed for that. It is only Rxed if you have shown that you can stick to a diet, but it increases the rate of weight loss. Without groups loose about 3.5 kg, with 7 kg IYSWIM.

It doesn't block fat absorbtion, but stops you feeling hungry, it is not 'speed'.

Thanks HMB - sounds perfect although I don't tend to feel hungry most of the time and don't have a big appetite. I am trying to cut out dairy and wheat for a while to see if I feel better/lose weight and this evening my sister had cheese on toast at my house and left 1/4 so I picked it up and started eating it but them (very ashamed to admit) I spat it in the bin but the taste was lovely Hope this isn't going to form into a habit

I used t work for the company that developed it. It does work but as with all of these things it isn't a magic bullet. But is can be a real bonus for people to keep them on track as it does make it just that bit easier to stay on the diet.

As with all drugs there can be side effects and it is only precribed if you can show that you can stick to a diet.

Could do with some myself

jojo38 · 08/10/2004 14:02

Hello again - and thanks for the welcome.
I know that nothing will completely work without a bit of will power - take smoking, there is no magic cure as said earlier in the thread. I have found it a great boost to help me understand that I CAN lose weight, what I look like and feel like when I do. It does work but and again, it needs some of your own personal input into it. I doesn't necessarily stop you feeling hungry but I found that once you start eating, a few mouthfuls are enough to satisfy. I am hoping it will "train" myself and my stomach to accept less intake and perhaps the right sort of intake. I crave toast and marmalade when I am on the tabs, so I have some. One slice is usually enough - it used to be 4!!!
No, it isn't speed, or even give you the described effects that speed does (allegedly) but still, can't have it all!!
Yes, I am in the UK. Bristol area.
I am cooking myself a Jacket potato too!!

Its good to be here.. thanks again.
