Knee injury and weight gain - 😢

I used to run. I now have patella tendinitis in both knees and it’s really painful I can’t walk very far ie from my car to work which is from the car park to the building next door.

Lack of exercise is really affecting my mood and I’m comfort eating - yes I know! I’m really annoyed. I was doing IF which was helpful but at the moment feeling so flat about having to rest. My stress levels are through the roof.

Any empathisers ? I would swim but I hate swimming it’s cold and my eczema flares in chlorine and bleach highlights go green so I’m not drawn to it.

Feeling really, really flat. I loved sport and now am working on being a little depressed Buddha. Any ideas for exercise to get the heart rate up? I’m doing physio but it doesn’t give me the buzz running does.

You want to get out of breath without using your legs, try these videos www.youtube.com/channel/UClosZzwrXmjPzDCwD9OcC0A/videos I used to do them when unable to walk after a surgery.

So hard, so good

I'm a RED runner (run every day). For 2 1/2 years I only had 6 days not running. Then I got a calf injury....

Boo!

But!!! I've discovered the joy of weight lifting / power lifting in the gym. I'm absolutely loving it. Great way to maintain my leg (running) muscles while injured. Also been great building my upper body strength, something neglected when I was only running.

Red did you just go by yourself and get stuck in it did you get a trainer? Go with a friend ? I can’t imagine anything topping the running high but fantastic to think there’s something else.

Le grand bleu oh wow thank you

I use the local council run, leisure centre gym. No personal trainer (can't afford it) but the staff are a massive help. I'd never stepped foot in a gym before.

I have a personal review every 4 weeks as part of my gym membership. This involves being given a goal-specific program to follow on an app. I'm shown how to use the machines or do the exercise, what weight to use, how many repeats and sets to do, how frequently and wheb to increase weights. This is then reviewed and a new program set every 4th week.

In addition, when I'm in the gym if I make any attempt to increase my weights or push myself, I will ask the staff member on duty to 'spot' me as I do the exercise. This means they stand with you and check your form is perfect so you don't get injured with the new weight. There's a staff member in the gym at all times (often 2) and that sort of on-the-spot advice is exactly why they are there!

Sounds like great support and that’s exactly what I would need.

I’m trying to get my head round getting a buzz out fo other sports (other sports just haven’t ever given me that lovely high jogging does).

Depends on what specifically gives you that buzz, what motivates you.

For me, I'm goal driven and like the ways you see constant improvement when running. Going faster, running further distance, running nonstop for longer,, more miles per week, distances/speed feeling easier than before.

I'm able to see constant small goals and achiements with weights at the gym. I think that's why it suits me. You just need to find something that suits you, there will be something.

Would your knees allow you to cycle? I tried cycling for a while when I couldn't run and borrowed a bike for a month rather than buying one. Not for me though, but might work for you. The distances covered are mind blowing when you're used to running distances - 10-15km is a short ride, equivalent to a 5km run. I went for a long bike ride one day, aiming for 2-3 hours like a long run. Ended up cycling 35km which is a real wow distance for a runner. Great way to scope our future long run routes too.
