What’s my best bet for fast weight loss?

Hi,

I’m currently 6 stone over a healthy BMI and hating the way I look. I’m getting married and it looks as if we’ll be bringing the date of the wedding forward a lot as very sadly my fiancé’s dad has just been diagnosed with bowel and liver cancer (terminal). We really want his dad to be there so we’re looking at just having a very small ceremony with close immediate family, sometime in the next few months.
All of which has massively focused my mind on losing this weight! I really don’t want to be fat on my wedding day and I’m looking for a reliable way to lose whatever is reasonably doable within a short time frame. Something like slimming world or weight watchers is probably going to be too gradual. Is there a recommended diet plan for this sort of thing - keto, slimfast? I know it should be about making long term healthy choices etc but I really just want a foolproof way of shedding (some of) my padding ASAP!

Limiting calories and increasing activity. I've lost a stone in a month doing this.

One weetabix for breakfast. A small lunch, plenty of fruit, and a normal dinner but exercising portion control. Lay off booze. And all I do is walk. I hit my 10000 steps every day. I am naturally also limiting carbs rather than doing keto. No sweetie treats at all either. It's melting off me! I'm a similar amount overweight to you too. So happy to see it coming off!

DonPablo · 15/02/2020 07:51

Sweet treats. No chocolate or cake had passed my lips for a month. Its got to make a difference!

Brexshits · 15/02/2020 07:51

If you can throw money at it the the 1:1 diet (used to be Cambridge) is effective short term. It won’t last though
Low carb also gives pretty quick results
Slimming world can work quickly initially for people with a lot to lose.

Just pick one and stick to it!

Add in some HIIT workouts and you’ll make a decent impact in a few months

I’ll caveat all this with I’m sure your family will think you are beautiful whatever your weight.

You won’t look nice in your dress losing a lot of weight really fast. Far better to be toned and fat than lose weight quickly and it makes your arms / face lose elasticity / cause baggy skin. Suggest you lift weights (get a PT) and combine it with strengthing and flexibility promoting exercise. HITT is better than a lot of cardio for making you look less saggy.

High protein with dark green veg, no alcohol and a lot of exercise
I lost about a stone in 8 weeks 12- small 10 size change my goal was increased strength and leaner look ahead of a holiday, less about looks in bikini more about mental positioning and being able to do a specific activity

Rough day looked like below. If you’ve 6stine to lose it will come off faster
BreKfast- I usually had almond milk latte, and hard boiled egg (cold, taken to work)
Lunch was either
Tuna mayo (full fat) with half Avo & tenderstem broccoli
Chicken breast, half avo, shredded kale & pomegranate bits
Salmon (cold cooked, aldi is v reasonable) avo broccoli

Dinner could be anything but I swerved all obvious carbs ie no pasta spuds rice and used alternatives like cauliflower rice, courgette spaghetti etc
Loads of water
Mint tea
Black coffee
If I was craving sweet I had a kind bar the high protein one

Exercise- hiit class twice a week, swim once a week, yoga once a week, lots of walking where possible ie if in London no tube if at desk would walk for 20 min at lunch.
I’m time poor with 2 kids and basically had to make it a priority.

If you have never tried it before. I would highly recommend low carbing. Use a system rather then going it alone. Use the low carb threads on here. I lost 2 and a half stone in 3 months and I weighed less then you. It hasn't been as effective 10 years and 2 kids later but that first time was amazing!!

My plan now is to get breastfeeding established (I have a 3 week old) and then do a moderate low carb diet combined with intermittent fasting. Fasting and low carb go go particularly well together because they work in similar ways (depleting sugar stores in the body to start using fat instead) watch Michel Moore's bbc documentary about fasting it's very interesting and completely dispells the idea that you must eat all the time to lose weight.

The most important aspect of any diet is adherence. So what ever technique you use it needs to be one you can stick to.

Top tips

Weigh daily (at the same time each day)
Join a group or online forum for help and accountability
Diet is way more effective then exercise so don't try to run it off. Exercise for other benefits.
Drink more water
Measure yourself.
Diet in a way you can stick to long term.

I know WW has a reputation for slow weightloss, but I've lost 2.5 stone on it since October. The app is amazing and you can just track everything you eat. I love it. It's really fun and supportive. You don't have to go to meetings.

Nomintrude · 15/02/2020 09:42

I think probably I'll go low carb/keto. Not sure it's great long term and I know from experience that it's not easy to forego all fruit as I did it for a very short time once before quite effectively. But seems to be effective and I don't want to feel hungry so it has that going for it.

Fast800 by Mike Mosley

Bluntness100 · 15/02/2020 09:57

I'd also agree low carb is the way to go. I've been doing it for years. Loads of energy and rhe cravings go.

Also try to get some exercise in, it tones your body so that it tightens as you loose weight and you look better.

Weights is a great idea, and you can even buy some York weights from amazon, google some apps for beginners, and do some lifting at home if you're not happy to join a gym.

AnuvvaMuvva · 15/02/2020 10:14

I lost 4 stone in 4 months following the Scarsdale Diet - an old low-carb, keto, dief from the 70s. You can get the book on Amazon for 99p.

I also used it again before my wedding to drop a stone in a month.

OP I started out 2020 6 stone over weight and am about 1.5 stone down. All I'm doing is a high fat low carb diet (not as low as Keto) and increasing my activity. I started couch to 5k and now walk everywhere. I still eat chocolate a few times a week as it was unsustained for me not to, but also now eat loads of fruit and big portions of meals with lots of veg and salad.

Nomintrude · 15/02/2020 11:18

Forrandomposts that's amazing, well done!

Keto

Nomintrude · 16/02/2020 09:22

Day 1 of keto!
I'm also thinking of doing couch to 5k. Would this be a good idea to do alongside keto or should I just stick to one thing at a time for now? Not sure if it would make difference to my weight loss/if it would be easier to start when I'm not so heavy? I definitely need to get fitter as well though.

Whilst you could start c25k now (and complete it) you might find that the sudden increase in activity and decrease in calories leaves you very hungry. It wlll also out a lot of pressure on your joints. You don’t say how long you’ve got but in your place I would get some good trainers or walking shoes, and start walking. Build up every day until you’re doing 10,000 plus a day. Once you’re doing that then you could start C25k ?. Just keep active - good luck

BuffaloCauliflower · 16/02/2020 09:40

Blood sugar diet/Fast 800 - Mediterranean keto style. Works well and fast.

And get to the gym for some weights and HIIT training if you can
