Not losing anything - why oh why?

I'll try to be brief. Got to goal weight with WW over 6 years ago (10 stone 3) then lost more (by choice) to get to 9 stone 7. Maintained this weight until 1 year ago when I slowly began to gain a bit. 'Went back to WW as a gold member as I was still within target at 10st 6 - bear in mind I'd gained almost a stone in a year, despite still following WW to maintain.(As my goal weight was 10 st 3, it meant I was still within range up to 10 st 7) anyway, got my head around Smartpoints and slowly lost a bit over a few weeks but then it started creeping up again although I was doing nothing differently. I'll admit, I relaxed things for 2 weeks at Christmas. I got a fit bit type watch for Christmas and despite doing a desk job, it's motivated me to get out and walk briskly every day for at least 6k steps and I do much more than that at the weekends. Also, ive been religiously back on plan WW wise since then too.
So here's what's happened...
Week after Christmas - weight 10 st 4.5
Week after that- weight 10 st 6.5 ( 2 pound gain!)
Week after that - 10 stone 5.5 (1 pound loss)
Week after that- stayed the same.
How can I not be losing weight?! I've gone from 0 exercise to walking at least 6k steps every day and am eating ad I was before. Also, a shirt that fitted me 2 months ago will not fasten, so I'm not losing inches either!
Thanks for getting to the end of my rant, WTF is going on?!!

Also you’re eating quite a lot of carb based foods

Bananas. Rice. Oats

Try cutting those out.

Herringbone31 · 07/02/2020 16:55

The other big myth is muscle weighs more than fat

It’s the same as feathers and metal. 1kg of feathers weighs the same as 1 kg of metal. Just smaller mass size

Herringbone31 · 07/02/2020 16:57

One more thing

In the U.K. the thyroid ranges mean you have to be almost dead. In the USA. Their ranges are much smaller. Meaning more treatment

Edit: work for the pituitary charity. We deal with thyroid everyday.

damnthatanxiety · 07/02/2020 17:02

Herringbone31 It's not incredibly simple at all. Whilst the basic premise is correct, the fact is that we have little control over the energy our body uses. All sorts of hormonal issues affect these - thyroid as you mention is one. When these are not functioning properly. mechanisms that normally work and use energy don't. Mechanisms like skin and nail regeneration, hair growth, digestion, heart rate etc. When these are not functioning, your body does not use the average 1200 or whatever calories 'just to survive' and uses far far less. So whilst yes, just eat less than you use is correct, this may actually require a person to consume no more than 500-600 calories a day, every day. And this is just not feasible. This is why it is important that we learn what the problems are and resolve those. Not just tell people to 'eat less than they burn off' and make out that it is easily within their power. It is not.

nibdedibble yes, rotator cuff is another frequently affected area with peri menopause. I have a problem with one right now also. It is a freaking PITA

helpmum2003 · 07/02/2020 17:07

I'm peri- menopausal and I've needed to cut carbs, eat more protein and start weights to control weight.

You may be best to have a few sessions with a PT, because of your injuries, to work out how you can do weights.

I agree with others that 6k steps will require very low calories to lose weight.

Herringbone31 · 07/02/2020 17:08

@damnthatanxiety

Why pick on me? I wasn’t the only one to say it...

Herringbone31 · 07/02/2020 17:09

Then go carbs free

damnthatanxiety · 07/02/2020 17:22

Herringbone31 didn't mean to pick on anyone Grin. I just read your post and wanted to clarify.

nibdedibble · 07/02/2020 18:15

damnthatanxiety there is nothing the peri-meno doesn’t screw up! I have a dodgy toe on my right foot, I’m blaming it on that Grin

Bluesheep8 · 09/02/2020 09:31

damnthatanxiety thank you for taking the time to offer such useful info. I will be asking my Dr some questions I think.

Re the weights suggestion, I don't think lifting weights is an option when getting dressed / fastening my bra at the back is almost impossible due to arm/shoulder issues.

helpmum2003 · 10/02/2020 17:08

@Bluesheep8 i understand you couldn't lift weights as such but you could do lower body work with a weights machine.

helpmum2003 · 10/02/2020 17:14

Just to add i started weights as rehab from major joint surgery. It was only once started i realised it was helping with weight control.

Bluesheep8 · 11/02/2020 06:17

helpmum yes that's a thought, thankyou. I automatically visualized using my poor arms. One of which is agony at the moment and I just can't see past that. On the upside, from suggestions on here I have cut out bananas and not having butter beans with tuna/chicken for lunch so we'll see what that does.

One of the reasons that people are saying to check in on your carb intake is that it is very very common for insulin resistance to increase as we age, which, in weightloss terms, means it is really hard to lose weight. Insulin is a hormone and is usually responsible for the 'ageing' factors discussed with regards to weightloss (It used to work etc)

I would really strongly suggest you look at Michael Moseley's diet books , e.g. the blood sugar diet. They are all designed to regulate your insulin so you can actually start losing weight.

Calorie counting is an incredibly naive way of accounting for weightloss. Our bodies are not combustion machines, our energy output is regulated by hormones and you need to take care of them first and foremost.
