Keto, juice or different diet?

Hubby and I previously did a juice diet (80% vegetables, 20% fruit). We had so much energy, walked or swam daily and felt great. We both lost 10kg over several months. The following year though, we put it all back on, plus more once we ate food again!

3mths ago we started a keto diet. I've lost 10kg again, but OH only 5kg. We have little energy and less drive for exercise as we did on the juice diet.

I feel keto is better long term, as we can dial up the carbs a bit once we have lost the weight, but keep it lower carb. OH wants to try the juice diet again, maybe for 2 weeks, to kick start things and get the energy back we previously had, then possibly return to keto.

Any experience of keto and/or juice diet, or something else we should be trying? (We cook almost everything from scratch and would prefer not to go to group meetings for weight loss).

Looking for support / motivation on fat loss journey

Keto is very low carb, and I've low carbed previously (and am now) with great results.

Yes, it's undoubtedly hard on the body, it hurts. The body finds it hard to burn fat instead of sugars, but does really effectively.

Juicing is undoubtedly very high carb (I've done that too), and switching between the two doesn't really sound compatible to me, it takes dedication and commitment to eliminate carbs the first time, once you get the taste for them again I think you'll either have to stay with juicing or it'll pretty much ruin everything. I think it'll be a struggle to flip back and forth between the two.

Well done on the losses though!

I'm surprised your OH has only lost 5kg in three months doing keto. It's well known for fast initial weight loss, then stabilises to a more steady rate. Are you sure youre doing it properly/he's not cheating?

The juice diet was probably all the vitamins you were having - maybe try some supplements in addition to keto? A juice diet isn't sustainable, and as you said you put the weight back on.

MyFamilyAndOtherAnimals1 · 14/01/2020 05:14

If you didn't mind the juice diet, why don't you do a more sustainable long term version of that - something like raw-2-4?

Discoballs · 14/01/2020 05:14

Are you sure you're doing keto right? By this point I'd expect you to have lots of energy. Are you eating enough fat to keep your metabolism up?

MyFamilyAndOtherAnimals1 · 14/01/2020 05:18

Oo sorry I meant raw till four - basically an intermittent plant based diet

Thanks for everyones' thoughts. OH works from home, whereas I try to get 10,000 steps a day. Also, I'm often full after 1/2 a plate of food, whereas OH often has 2 or even 3 helpings- hence the difference in weight loss. I also log carbs on a carb app whereas he doesn't. I think a need to re-look at what he is eating too.

I do keto, I'm a bit bemused by the comment it hurts. It doesn't hurt me remotely, and you only need to look at forums on line to see it doesn't hurt anyone else. You might get a headache or whatever going into it, but that's it.

I have a lot more energy with keto, so I'm also very surprised you both have less energy on this than when you're basically not eating food.

I'd say something is amiss in how you're both doing it.

Any way of eating that you can't maintain, is no use to you. You need to find a way you can eat for life, otherwise you are stuck in the cycle of diet, gain, diet, gain.
