Hashimotos, 40+ and you lost weight?

If so, how did you do it?

I've tried keto and it messes so much with my hormones I've ended up quite I'll - and scared!

But I also don't believe that just eating a bit less and upping exercise a bit will massively make a difference.

Plus I'm afraid that if I loose the 12kg I'd like to, that it'll send my levo dosage out of whack and I'll end up putting on weight and being lethargic - and not know if it's because I'm pushing myself too much, because I'm looking for an excuse to be a bit lazy that day, or it's actually thyroid related!

I got diagnosed when I was so ill I would fall asleep on the floor whilst looking after my 6 month old, but thought I was just lazy and a shit mum. I'm not good at knowing when it's illness and when it's laziness!

So if you did it, how did you do it and how did it go?

I have Hashimoto’s but am 36, so not meeting criteria fully but thought I’d share.

My hormones got completely whacked in pregnancy which made me so lethargic I struggled to stay awake, but regulated immediately after I gave birth.

The first 3-4 months I didn’t try to lose weight as I was getting breastfeeding established. I then started intermittent fasting (16:8), which has proved very effective - losing 3.5kg a month on average. I’m now at 10.5kg lost and my hormone levels haven’t changed.

I eat three normal meals, no snacking, drink only water and coffee.

Hope any of this helps you - living with Hashimoto’s can be such a drag.

I have underactive thyroid and I'm 40+ diagnosed in first pregnancy and d im the same- cant tell if im tired because im tired/lazy or its thyroid. Need to loss weight but looking into low carb it seems keto may cause hormonal issues with thyroid so not too sure what to do. What was your experience?
I'm due to get my bloods done now so will do that and start low carb but not too low I think. Also exercise a bit. Then might go get bloods done again in 4 months and see.....

7Worfs** that's interesting. I've been half-heartedly doom intrmittent fasting (which basically means either I haven't or the eating part of it I would just go a bit mad on Grin because I wasn't sure it's work anyway) so it's encouraging to hear your experience.

Piixxiiee I had a robes having great results with keto so I did it. The first week I also had quite good results (mainly water loss in the first week though) but then I started to get absolutely exhausted. Like full on thyroid exhaustion. I gave up and felt better pretty immediately.

I tried again a year later, not knowing the link between keto and hormone issues and I ended up feeling like I had lead boots. I was so exhausted and sick feeling that I couldn't pick up my feet properly so was shuffling. It took me 25-30 mins to walk a 7 minute walk. After about a 7-10 days of this I started googling and found articles saying keto wasn't good if you had thyroid problems (at least autoimmune ones, can't remember exactly) so ate some more carbs and felt ok again within a day or two. My friend talked about how there was a barrier whe you started keto that you had to break though and then you got lots of energy so I kept going waiting for it, but I was so very ill feeling that that never arrived. When I then discussed it with her, she never felt that bad, just a bit fluey first a day or two! I also didn't even lose the water weight the second time and whereas the first time I'd managed a week before feeling bad, the second time it started pretty much on day 2.

So no more keto for me! Grin

I’m wary of keto for the same reasons, OP. Have you tried the autoimmune diet? I did it for six months or so years ago, just trying to get the motivation to start again...

There is a woman in YouTube called potato wisdom, she is over 40 and has hashimotos and has lost a lot of weight!

Helspopje · 30/12/2019 11:53

Weight training
Protein base diet
Liothyronine

AuntyElle no I haven't, looking forward to having a look! Thanks.

Heismyopendoor more viewing for this evening - thanks!

Helspopje what is lyrothianine?

It’s pretty restrictive at first... I’m trying to remember the best resource.
Here’s another one:

Helspopje · 31/12/2019 08:23

Liothyronine is T3
I was consistently hypothyroid despite loads of levothyroxine (T4) up to 250mcg. Apparently I don’t convert it to T3 well so now on a mix of both.

Kraai · 31/12/2019 09:43

Helspopje aah I see. I think I might be ok on that front. Glad to hear you had that diagnosed and then responded to. I've heard so many stories of women being told it's all in their mind.. 😬

Your response to keto is possibly explained here and the article (and site) gives some great info

Hi,
I'm 39 and have Hashimotos, diagnoses 7 years ago. I was largely a symptomatic for the first five years and I have since gained 25kg in the last two years.
I'm in a bit of despair to be honest, I find 5:2 works well for my energy levels, I also find no sugar helps.
I haven't yet found an answer for the weight loss but am giving up alcohol in the new year. Currently only drink gin and soda so no real calories.

The recommendations are gluten free, sugar free and dairy free as they all cause inflammation.

Isabella Wentz has some great books.
