Apple Watch

Hello all,

I know that I’m going to come across as a right thicko but I can’t seem to find the answer by Googling it.

If I buy an Apple Watch to use as my fitness tracker (and to tell the time 😉) do I need a contract for it? I’m currently with EE with my mobile so I could get one from them and add it to my contract but I’m considering buying one outright.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated 😁.

No. You only need a contract if you buy the cellular version, and quite frankly I don't think that's worth it. I think the aluminium model (non cellular) is just fine.

Stainless steel, titanium, and ceramic include cellular but you don't need to activate it (but it will call the emergency services regardless if you enable fall derivation and emergency SOS)

You do need an iPhone either way though.

As for fitness tracking. It's pretty good. Built in apps work well but plenty of third party options. Keeps me and my DW on our toes. We even used the new competition feature last week. She won.

We like Apple Watches so much we've both upgrade. She got an Series 4 last year and I've just got a Series 5. Recommended.

I have one of the first series of Apple Watches, and that doesn’t require a contract. I have my iPhone contract obviously, but when I bought the watch separately I just linked it to my phone and that’s as it.

Some of the newer ones have the ability to be used as a phone without your phone nearby and I think these may require a contract. Only if you want it to do that though. Mine still measures steps etc without my phone being near, I just wouldn’t be able to answer calls / send and receive messages on it (which I can do if my phone is in range).

Ooh thank you. I may have to treat myself 😁!

I am with EE and bought an Apple Watch a while ago. I did want the cellular capability, which I find very useful but which adds a fair bit to the cost of the watch, and I did need a contract with EE for that to work. It costs about a fiver a month. I've now opted to upgrade to the 5 and to buy it via EE. Doing it that way means it's essentially the same as a phone contract and you can upgrade the watch at the end of the contract, like you can a phone.
