Thick waist?

Following on from the thread recently about waist measurements I decided to get the tape measure out together with the Next Directory size guide and worked out that I am a really wonky shape. Before children I was quite pear shaped and needed a 14 for my hips now I'm a 12 (yippee!) but I have noticed that not all 12s fit.

Anyway took some measurements and compared with the size guide and my waist is 30 inches which is a 14, my hips are 35 inches which is somewhere between an 8 and a 10 and my bust is 35 inches, a 12.

I wondered if anyone else had the same problem and if anyone had any tips on how to get my waist back. I do exercise and have lost an inch off my waist over the last few months but would like to speed up the process.

LOL!

Sent a pair of jeans back to the Directory this weekend, they were low waisted and huge on me but if the waist was where it should be I wouldn't have been able to button them. Grrrrrr!

Don't know about the waist bit demented - I rather suspect that the answer is that it's luck of the draw and we're all diffrent and that some of us will naturally store fat there, and others elsewhere (on the hips/bum in my case). Funnily enough I am losing inches from my waist, but even four stone lighter I haven't shifted a single inch from my hips. I'd love to know how you switch from pear shaped to having small hips though, if there's a secret to that! I'm not revealing sizes, but suffice to say using standard measurements my hips are 3 sizes bigger than my waist, and two sizes bigger than my bust - so I'll join you in the wonky measurements brigade!

It's annoying when it doesn't come off evenly isn't it. Pre-children I always stored my weight on my hips and had a reasonably flat stomach and a half decent waistline. Now my stomach looks like something out a horror movie and I'm just straight up and down.

The only thing I can think of that may be helped the hips (don't get me wrong it's nice to get rid of them would just like to be a bit more in proportion) is exercise I do aerobics, BodyBalance and BodyPump, all of which with the exception of BodyBalance I did after DS1 with no hip reducing results. So either it's the BodyBalance or it's some sort of weird fluke.

I'm going on holiday in a few weeks and have bought a bikini (never worn one before always thought I was too fat, look back now and I'm really with myself as I was fine and should have made the most of it) and I think I'm getting last minute nerves about my stomach/waist area.

I know what you mean Demented, I've lost 11 lb and it's all come off my bum and hips. The waistbands on my trousers are only a smidgeon looser and my bras haven't really loosened at all.

Years ago I used to do Callanetics which was really good at tightening up wobbly bits, I've been saying for weeks that I must do it again. The thing is it's fairly boring, you don't work up a sweat so you don't get the endorphins, and it hurts (that's because it's working).

glitterfairy · 20/09/2004 20:13

Wear that bikini demented I dare you! No one will take the blindest bit of notice it is all in your head I am sure.

Bran had been about to post no my waist is very intelligent! Reading yours though I know that my body is similar and bits come off here and there leaving me looking a little weird in places.

Demented · 20/09/2004 22:48

The most embarrassing bit is when at BodyBalance (mixture of yoga, tai chi and pilates) is that I have occassionally become suctioned to the floor by my belly button and lifting my body back up is accompanied by a loud 'shluuuurp' noise.

Glitterfairy, LOL at your intelligent waist. I had been thinking along the lines of me having a thick waist to match my head! Yes I will wear the bikini, it cost far too much to sit in my case for two weeks, I'm just hoping a tan will work wonders, I also think I'll leaving running round the beach after DS2 (aged 2) to DH then nobody will see the wobble!

Did a set of abdominal exercises this evening I suppose with just over two weeks to go I could still achieve something if I do them every day?

Demented at body balance class. Possibly the only example I've ever heard of when it's less embarassing to pretend that you've just farted.

Glitter, I read your post last night, and didn't get it at all until just now. I think I can safely say that your waist (indeed any part of your body) is more intelligent than my brain .

glitterfairy · 21/09/2004 20:05

ROFL Gald you got it Bran demented you will be amazed what a tan can do!

Bran, are you like me then wearing low or skim waisted trousers/skirts, I live in fear of anything with a a waist where it should be.

Another fear is burning my belly, that would be attractive and uncomfortabe!

I wear a lot of combats, and drawstring-waist trousers, which are quite low-waisted. If I wear anything with a fixed waist I tend to roll and scrunch the waistband (with my rolls of fat ), and it's usually quite uncomfortable while still being too baggy around the bum and hips. I don't wear skirts at all, except for special occasions.
