Size 24 swimming?

RavenLG · 02/07/2019 17:03

As the title says. I'ma size 24, 18 stone and an absolute state. Somehow I've convinced myself to go swimming tonight, bought a bathing suit, a massive towel to wrap around me in between pool and changing room. My only thing is my anxiety is properly kicking in now and I'm not sure I can get all my flat legs and wobbly arms to make it there without having an anxiety attack.
I worked in a leisure centre when I was younger so I know there are big people that go, and the lifeguards don't care at all (unless you start drowning obviously!) it's just the thought of eyes on me.

Can someone talk me down and convince me to go before I end up 20 stone?!!

You won’t regret it. I am the same size and weight as you and I love a swim. I just walk to the pool with my head up. I feel shit inside but I remind myself that being fat at the pool is preferable to being fat and doing sod all about it. Come back and tell us how it went and have fun!!

cakeandchampagne · 02/07/2019 17:07

Go! Enjoy the pool! And come back and tell us how great the water felt!
What color is your new bathing suit?

RavenLG · 02/07/2019 17:47

Thank you that’s actually really good way of thinking about it!

What color is your new bathing suit?
It’s a lovely vomit of every colour and pattern to distract Grin

Ok bathing suit is on. Bag is packed. 😖 wish me luck.

No one cares, honestly!

funmummy48 · 02/07/2019 17:52

If I see someone large taking exercise I always think “good for them”. That’s in a supportive non-patronising way. Go for it!

Letstalkabout6 · 02/07/2019 17:52

I’m a large lady and desperate to find a swimming costume that actually fits. I think I’m too long in the body and just look hideous Hmm

HettyStThomas · 02/07/2019 17:52

I'm size 24/26 and swim with my boys. I honestly have never had a bad comment/look/reaction. Hold your head up high. You're making positive change and deserve to feel great.

Surfingtheweb · 02/07/2019 17:53

Come on deep breath, you can do this 😀

SeaViewBliss · 02/07/2019 18:18

I really want to go swimming now!

gassylady · 02/07/2019 18:22

Enjoy your swim. Have you thought about trying aquacise? Great fun can work all areas and no one sees what’s going on under the water. I love it because my coordination is very poor but no one can see

BestIsWest · 02/07/2019 18:22

Hope you enjoy! I go 3 times a week and I’m a similar size. I love it.

Cornishmumofone · 02/07/2019 18:33

No one cares, but if you're feeling really self conscious maybe see if there's a local hotel with a pool that you can pay to use. It's likely to be quieter (but smaller). A couple of visits might give you the confidence to go to the leisure centre.

redcarbluecar · 02/07/2019 18:37

I don’t think anyone looks their best at the swimming baths, fat or thin! I’m sure nobody cares and if anyone does that’s their problem to keep to themselves. Swimming is great exercise - enjoy.

RavenLG · 02/07/2019 19:42

Thanks all. Just got back. I went a bit wobbly (scuse the pun!) when we got there but luckily it was a changing village so my oh made sure I was ok. It was strangely freeing and I felt absolutely fine. Hopefully it’s sparked something in me! Oh and because I didn’t have my glasses on I couldn’t see people (potentially) judging me Grin.
My anxiety has been an absolute bitch lately so I’m weirdly really proud of myself.

Letstalkabout6 I’m only 5foot so I can’t help on that front but I can imagine it’s a pain. The one I got was from Asda but I don’t think it would have been great for anyone much taller.

Star Well done!
When are you going again? Smile

SeaViewBliss · 02/07/2019 20:41

Raven I’m the same with my glasses! I’m so glad it’s been positive for you. Have an un-patronising well done!

RavenLG · 02/07/2019 20:58

When are you going again?
Thursday probably. Hopefully I can build up to more days a week but the timetable isn’t brilliant for work etc.

SeaView it’s great isn’t it. I felt invincible, until i swam to close to the wall and booted it 😂

😂 I sometimes lose my DS because all blonde 14 year olds look the same when I’m not wearing them!

BestIsWest · 02/07/2019 22:22

Get yourself some prescription swimming goggles (you don’t need to put them on until you’re in the water). They’re (reasonably) cheap. - I think mine were around £25 but so worth it.

RavenLG · 03/07/2019 08:21

I think I might get some if I keep it up regularly, as I could see a benefit, especially as we were in the pool for half an hour when it was public swimming and the kids were a bit mad splashing etc lol.

Well done you : ) I'm the same size and have finally got to the stage of almost not giving a shit what anyone thinks. If I saw you in the pool, I'd be mentally high-fiving you. You have as much right to be in the pool as anyone else and anyone who judges you is just nasty.

3dogs2cats · 04/07/2019 13:11

Well done for going. I go twice a week, and even though I am fat, 103 kilos, I am getting thinner, and also really toning, it is great exercise as it doesn’t hurt the knees.
