I noticed recently that my ever growing belly (after 2 kids) was a lot larger recently.... I saw in the news a while ago it shouldn’t be bigger than 35 inches if your 5’4 (average women height)....

It was bad.... 44 inches!!!!!!! Time to get to the gym..... and my hips 50... I’m only 5’2 can anyone relate?

I am 5'10" and at my largest my waist was 42 and my hips 53.

Crazzzycat · 12/06/2019 20:01

I’m also 5”10, so perhaps not that easy to compare stats. I started this year with a 40 inch waist and am now just over 32 inches, so it’s possible to change Smile

I followed a calorie controlled diet of around 1400 kcals a day and did lots of walking for exercise.

I read that regardless of height everyone should have a waist smaller than 90cm to reduce health risks, not sure how true that is!

WindsweptEgret · 12/06/2019 20:42

Isn't it about the waist-hip ratio being under 0.8? Mine is 26 inches, hips 34 inches, 5ft 5. I was always in the healthy weight range but it's only now I'm at this weight that the ratio is low enough.

avalanching · 12/06/2019 20:42

Just found it on NHS it's actually 94cm for men and 80cm for women, regardless of height. I'm shocked by that!

avalanching · 12/06/2019 20:43

According to NHS site it's nothing to do with height or BMI, it's all to do with how much weight you're carrying around your stomach.

I find the hip to waist ratio thing confusing and depressing! I would have to be skeletal to be in the "healthy" hip-waist ratio range as I'm an inverted triangle shape. So even now, I'm a healthy BMI range but "high risk" for hip-waist.

Sofasurfingsally · 12/06/2019 23:27

Mine is 77, but I'm still more than a stone over my BMI.

Siameasy · 13/06/2019 10:58

Mine was quite big last year-37. No good because I don’t have big hips at all to balance it out. I’ve whittled it down to 29. I would say tho that while exercise is great, the majority of fat loss will come through diet

floribunda18 · 13/06/2019 11:07

I'm 38-29-39. Still overweight but it's fairly evenly distributed and not too much on my middle. Highest my waist has been was about 33" a couple of years ago, I've lost 3" or more all over.

Despite what some people say I find cardio exercise keeps weight off my middle section, also doing 5-2 I lost a lot of fat from my middle, and WW plan helps as well (that's what I'm doing now). I do eat starchy carbs but not many, hardly any cakes or biscuits or anything with added sugar, lots of fruit and veg, not very much meat, lots of pulses, beans, some fish.

Natasha4767 · 13/06/2019 11:18

Op I'm 5'2 as well I don't no my waist size but I know I'm over weight at 12.3lb trying to shed a few lbs 😩😩

Jaffacakebeast · 13/06/2019 11:46

I’m 5”2. Waist is 31, totally not In Proportion though, not much smaller than hips. Waist is very high too 😬 think for my body shape I need a few inch off but it’s so stubborn

Firstmum03 · 13/06/2019 13:27

After reading this I realise I need to lose almost 10 inches from my belly to be a healthy size.... that’s a lot of fat to lose. Any tips?

@Firstmum03 it was my waist size that triggered me to lose weight in the end, not sure why it bothered me more than BMI or physical appearance, I guess I envisioned the fat around my organs which made me nervous. So in terms of losing it, I think everyone has a different preference. I like to treat myself with food, not healthy I know but I do, so I found calorie counting on MFP did the job as it meant if I wanted a Big Mac on the weekend I just ensured I had a lower calorie lunch or dinner that day. It didn;t make me abandon certain food groups and much more simplistic than Slimming World which I really didn't get on with. I got a fitbit and tried to walk 10,000 steps a day. I lost 2 stone in just under 3 months, have put a few lb back on but counting again now as those few lbs were from eating what I wanted for 6 months, so generally speaking have found it quite easy to maintain.

Hobbz · 14/06/2019 16:10

I measured this morning - 31.75 inches (down from 44 inches - I've lost 5 st and counting - I was 46-44-48 at my biggest).

I am currently (round to nearest inch) 37- 32 - 39 (last time I was slim or at least slimmish I was 36-27-38...so I'm still carrying a lot around the middle).

Laniakea · 14/06/2019 16:57

I'm down from 42.5 at the start of the year to 32.5 now, I haven't measured anywhere else but am hourglass shaped.

I lost most of it doing 5:2 but am in my 4th week of BSD & in the last three weeks have lost an inch and a half. I've still got two stones to lose to get to a healthy weight & three stone to my ideal weight. I expect/hope that my waist will end up under 30.

@Elloello ,I lost 16 kg and went down 8 inches.

I don’t naturally carry weight on my stomach though, so I think it may have been easier for me to lose inches there than it would have been for someone more apple-shaped

I’ve lost 8in. I’m an apple and the overall loss is 2 stone since September last year. Im naturally thicker waisted and even when I was sub-nine stone some years ago (which for my frame is skeletal) I was still a 28w

SinkGirl · 15/06/2019 10:37

I still have diastasis recti over two years after having my twins so my stomach is a mess. I’m wondering if anyone else has this affecting their measurements? I’m not carrying huge amounts of fat there but it looks much fatter than it is!

floribunda18 · 16/06/2019 08:38

Oh, also, where IS the right place to measure your hips?

It is usually the very top of the thighs on diagrams, but my bum is bigger than that bit.

madeyemoodysmum · 16/06/2019 08:42

Waist 32 hips 36 but even as a teen I had a large waist to hips. Noe is just flabbier but I’m about 7 lb heavier at 50 that I was at 25 so I guess that’s ok.

I lost 23lb on 5:2 about 4 years ago I would like to loose a few more but the last few are hardest to shift
