To stop weighing myself?

I have a terrible relationship with my body image. I feel so insecure most of the time. I get really happy when I see the numbers on the scales go down but equally very very low when they go up. Has anyone successfully given up weighing? Pro's? Con's? Has it made you happier? Thanks xx

I stopped weighing myself and put on 4 stone in 4 years Blush I kind of knew I'd expanded but I buried my head in the sand with how much.

I'm afraid the scales are the only proof. I don't think measuring the way your clothes fit will work as sizing varies from store to store and some garments do stretch with you iyswim.

I stopped weighing myself and put on two stone in six months Blush.

I stopped weighing and put on 2 stone very fast! I'm still struggling to lose it.

The thing is when you lose fat your weight can go up temporarily. This is because when fat is metabolised water and carbon dioxide are released. The water may stay in the fat cells for a while until it is released and excreted then you get a sudden drop in weight.

But saying that, do you need to lose any excess body fat? Are you a healthy BMI for your frame?

ChocOrCheese · 12/06/2019 17:36

@tinylittlebird - thank you! I have so often noticed a spike in weight just before a drop and it used to bug me. It doesn't now but I am so glad to know the reason why.

OP - I personally weigh myself every day as it keeps me accountable. When I stopped weighing the weight crept on - and then I didn't dare to weigh. If you are really stressed by it then you could measure instead, but that might be just as stressful.

Sorry OP, I’m also in the ‘when I stopped weighing myself I put on weight’ camp.

I now weight myself every Monday morning. That seems to work to keep my weight steady yet not be too obsessed.

I'm another weigh every day person. If I left it a whole week, I'd be too reluctant to see the damage and would avoid the scales altogether.

Were you on here recently saying that you’re becoming obsessed with feeling your hip bones?

tinylittlebird · 12/06/2019 21:30

You're welcome, Choc. Smile

I stopped weighing myself and, like others, gained weight. I used to get very depressed if I hadn't lost any weight (and my body has never liked to lose weight on a regular basis - its nothing for 3 weeks then a 5lb drop then a smaller loss then nothing for 2 weeks then a little drop - its so frustrating!)

A few years ago, I was getting very fed up with not losing so I weighed myself 3 times a day for a couple of weeks. It made me realise how much my weight varied during the day, that I didn't lose weight overnight ( like normal people!) and that my weight loss would never be regular. So I stopped obsessing about it, focussed more on exercise and thus gained weight .
