Tall women? Do you weigh more than you look?

Hi all,

I am 5'11, about 12 stone 9 so not quite overweight but bmi is near that end of the scale. However, people are often surprised at how much I weigh. I am a size 12 mainly sometimes a 10 on top. I don't think I look like I am close to being overweight. My brother is stick thin 6'4 and he weighs 15 and a half stone and you wouldn't be able to tell.

Do tall people carry their weight differently? Do you weigh more than you look?

Yep, I'm 5ft 8in and weigh approx 13 stone, am size 14 (need size 16 bottoms in certain styles/shops). People are always surprised by my weight!

I have lost 3 stone over the last year or so....and dropped only 1 dress size! So frustrating as I want to be size 12 but don't think I can lose another 3 stone! As a pp said, it took about 2 stone loss before anyone noticed Hmm

I'm 5ft 11in and I weigh 14 stone. I'm a size 16 both top and bottom but have been told that I look a smaller size (I wish). I've just started to lose a few pounds as everything is getting a bit tight ..

I'm 5'8 and about 14 stone and a size 16. I'm overweight, but people are always surprised if I tell them how heavy I am. I guess I carry it quite well, being tall, but could definitely do with losing a couple of stone

Yep I’m 5ft 8 and 18 stone and people seem shocked I weigh that much

Even if I am fat.

I think the waist to height ratio discriminates against people with short bodies - in the same way that BMI doesn't work on very muscular people.

Jellykat · 31/05/2019 20:59

Well OP its peculiar, we are the same height but i'm 10 stone 8, so 2 stone lighter.. Yet you're a size 12/10 and i'm a 14/16! One can assume bone size must have a lot to do with how heavy one looks..

Crazzzycat · 31/05/2019 20:59

Absolutely. I’m 5ft 10 and weigh 12.5 stone, which is technically overweight. But not even my GP believes I weigh this much.

prettyinpink23x · 31/05/2019 21:33

@jellykat maybe its a family thing and me and my family are heavier or something rather than height im not sure. Although I do know when I was 11 stone i was still wearing size 12s. My measurements are 35, 28 1/2, 39 if that helps.

prettyinpink see i'm bigger then you at 36, 30, 40.. so the next size up.
I wonder if its to do with bone density or something? Maybe at 55 and post menopausal, mine is crap so it weighs less.. is that a thing?
I suspect though a large part of being heavier then you look, probably depends on what you wear i.e if your clothes are slimming you'll look lighter - others perception.. I know i look like a tank in a gathered skirt, or trousers with side pockets for example Smile
