The fat clothes dilemma: keep or give away?

I'm losing weight! One of the biggest thrills is fitting in to smaller clothes (and looking less like a burst sausage in some of my faves) but I'm unsure what to do with stuff that's just too big for me now.

Tshirts, basics etc I'm just going to bin or donate, that's easy. But what about my best levis that don't fit any more? In the back of my mind is a sensible voice saying if you put the weight back on you'll be devastated that you got rid of them.

But the bright happy voice that chirps positively is saying give them away, you're never going to need them again.

Total weight loss so far is just over a stone, with max one stone to go.

Jury?

Get rid!! Be positive, I've got about a stone and a half to lose and you'd better believe I'm chucking my "fat jeans" out when I'm done with them! Or sell them and put the money towards a new smaller pair!

Put in the loft as a compromise?

Floralnomad · 25/04/2019 10:11

Get rid , I lost over 5 stone and got rid of all my fat clothes , except for a few of my favourite tops which are just looser and I wear them for dog walking etc .

OneofPansPeople · 25/04/2019 10:16

Get rid without a doubt.
Great yourself to smaller size Levis and use that as thinspiration. Having a stock of if I get fat again clothes is defeatist.
Well done!

Unless you are planning on anymore children, get rid!

OwlinaTree · 25/04/2019 10:27

I've literally just posted about this on another thread! My wardrobe badly needs a sort through. I got rid of 'fat' clothes before, but then had to re buy after another child! Not planning any more children (although can't quite bring myself to get rid of Pg clothes for some reason), but not sure how harsh to be!

Get rid and tell yourself this is it now

I’m torn on this. I understand the ‘be positive, look forward’ attitude but at the same time I’ve lost and gained a stone numerous times over the past few years and have always regretted the nice clothes I’ve passed on.

You’ve lost a lot more though so I’d probably say get rid of the biggest sizes.

Oh and huge congratulations btw, that’s quite an achievement.

MorrisZapp · 25/04/2019 12:03

Lol, not just me then! I live in a flat so no loft to fling stuff up into. I think I'm going to allow myself say, 5 chosen and loved items and put them carefully in the back of a cupboard.

I'm finding charity shops great BTW for my 'interim' and 'thinspiration' jeans. No expensive denim for me until I've hit my ultimate goal and stayed there for a bit!

I wouldn't be too impulsive. You could put away your best/faves in those vacuum packs so they are packed really small. Hopefully you'll never need them. But maybe review again in a couple of years.

I went down around three sizes. I have just kept clothes in one size bigger, just in case. I might get rid of those last one size bigger things at some point but not yet. My weight loss doesn't seem real sometimes, so I worry something will go wrong!

AntiHop · 05/05/2019 10:08

I lost a lot of weight about 7 years ago. My weight went up after having a baby and again recently after a stressful year. But I haven't returned to the previous heaviest weight.

I kept a suitcase full of my largest clothes. This is because it would be soul destroying to go shopping for clothes if I'd put all that weight on.

OhioOhioOhio · 05/05/2019 10:13

Well done. Really well done. Get rid of them.

OrdinarySnowflake · 05/05/2019 10:21

I used to help out in a charity shop - we used to get a lot of larger sized summer clothes in January as a local weight loss group/expert suggested getting rid of your summer clothes to January new starters so you had no choice but to be buying new clothes for the summer, and you might as well buy a size down. Apparently it really worked - not having the bigger things to put on forced a "trying to lose weight" to a "I am going to be smaller" mindset.

So given that, I'd get rid, don't give yourself the excuse.

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 05/05/2019 21:02

Well done on your weight loss Smile

The old clothes dilemma, eh? I went from a size 20 to a size 8. I kept just one of my size 20 business suits — to remind myself of how I used to be (and to show others who didn't know me before the revamp).

My advice is to get rid of your old clothes because ..... you're not going to put the weight back on, are you? Blush
