How much should a 5'11" man weigh?

I am putting DH on a diet (have told him it is a "health plan") as after months of disagreeing about whether he should lose weight or not, I've calculated his BMI is 30, i.e. getting into the "obese" range.

He doesn't look obese, actually, just overweight, but I want my children's father to be around as long as possible and so I've told him what the new rules are.

He recently had a medical for a new job and told me he had weighed 97 kilos (15 stone) and that the doctor had told him he could lose a stone. Having looked at BMI recommendations, it seems to me like he should be losing 2.5 stone. I suspect he has under-represented what the doctor really said as he feels sensitive about it. On the other hand, 12.5 stone does seem quite light for the upper end of a BMI "healthy weight range".

Can anyone shed some light on this, or recommend alternative ways to determine what weight a man of his height "should" be? He is of medium to large frame, I'd say.

Also, any tips on how to motivate a man to diet and keep at it would be fantastic.

I would say your GP is right. My DH is about 5'11" and at 14st he looks positively 'fit'. So saying he's about 18 - 19 st at the mo, and does look a bit well plump! However he is barrel chested and large framed. The BBC fit programme thing said if his waist is over 40" then worry.

On the same note, does anyone know a site with a weight chart, as I'd been wondering about this myself.

BMI 20-25 range for 5'11" is 10st3 - 12st11.
This is for men and women though, so I would have thought the top end of this range is appropriate for a medium/large framed man.

I think 25 BMI for a well-built male, is pretty difficult to achieve.

I agree with crunchie too - my dh has lost loads of weight recently. He's 6'2" and at 14st11 looks pretty good ... but he still has to lost another 12 lb to get down to 25 BMI. (He's determined to do it though!)

This is interesting, my DH is trying to lose some weight just now, he is 6' 2" and 15 stone exactly, he has lost 12 lbs in the last few weeks and lost about a stone prior to this, he looks loads better for it but has a BMI of about 27.5, I don't think losing another stone or so would be too much (and would put him just at the top of his normal recommended weight range) but any more than that and I think he would look gaunt.
