Hi,

Just looking for some advice or ideas for exercise for someone with a busy life and multiple health issues!

So, I have chronic asthma, hypothyroidism, hypertension, coeliac disease, allergic to trees, Vit D deficiency and am about 4-5 stone overweight, I weight 16 stone, am 5ft6, size 18 but have a large frame- shoe size 10, large hands etc (always have even when a size 10-12!). I also have a lower back injury/weakness from 1992 (bulging disc) that flares occasionally and I am always tired!

I work full time++ , am studying, have a 9 year old and 19 year old at home and a husband who works shifts. Money is limited too but can potentially find some for exercise

So, what would anyone suggest as a good exercise to do that could fit around my life and not affect my illnesses etc?

Any suggestions much appreciated!!

When I can't make it outside to exercise for whatever reason, I sometimes do what I call musical skipping! It's high impact so you can do it for a short period of time and it has a big effect, you can do it at home, and it doesn't cost much.

  1. Buy a really good sports bra. Invest in this before anything else, even if you are broke. It will make all the difference if you are on the large side like me. Enell or SheFit are great brands for large boobs.
  2. Get a cheap skipping rope. I got a nice one from a pound shop, but I've also used clothes line rope in the past!
  3. Set yourself up somewhere in a room or the garden where you have enough space around and above you. So about 2 meters square of floor space -- push all the furniture out the way if necessary!
  4. Set an alarm for 15 minutes. (later you can build up to 30 minutes or longer).
  5. Put the radio on! Something with both music and talking. Whenever the music plays, skip! When the music stops and they are talking, stretch.

You'll be really out of breath and crap at it at first. That's ok! You'll get better. Your family may laugh at you or you may feel foolish tripping over your skipping rope. tell them/your inner critic to sod off :-)

Good luck!

With your health issues, you should definitely consult your doctor before starting any exercise. If you’re clear to exercise, then I think a home workout program would work best for you. There are tons of different options out there, but something low-stress would be in your best interest.

Yoga is widely regarded as a great workout that doesn't put too much stress on the body. I love yoga and have been using OpenFit's Yoga52 program for a little while now. They offer regimens in blocks of 30 days, 8 weeks, or 1 year, depending on your expertise. I'm currently doing their 8-week program, but the 30-day is made specifically with beginners in mind. OpenFit has a 30-day free trial being offered right now, and you can do the entire beginner's class without having to invest in it: www.openfit.com/p/yoga52

Exercise is important to living a healthy lifestyle, however, weight is lost in the kitchen. Don't be discouraged if you can't handle the exercises, because a good diet can seriously help you drop pounds. You mentioned that money is tight, so if you're not looking to pay for a subscription, OpenFit has tons of recipes, meal plans, basic workouts, and general fitness information that you can use to get in shape: www.openfit.com

High five from a fellow size ten shoe wearer!!

I had a similar amount to lose, and have 1 st left to go now. I have to admit I didn't exercise until almost 3 st was off through diet, mainly through lack of confidence. And a bit of laziness Grin Then I opted for skipping and running, with some weights and yoga very recently added (but struggling to keep motivated with those). Based on your health needs and limited childcare/time to go elsewhere to exercise, it sounds like YouTube or DVDs could be good, as indoor to avoid trees? Sticking to cardio ones without weights, to avoid strain on your disc? I'd try a few out to see if there's one you enjoy. You might persuade the 9yo to join in, mine sometimes will if bribed

Thank you everyone :) I think the home exercise way would be a good start for me and I’ll have a look at openfit....

Diet wise it’s really annoying as I don’t eat excessive amounts, have limited carbs due to being gluten free etc but after loosing 10-12ibs my body decides that’s enough and stops! Even on exante I only managed to get a max of a stone off so I think I need to push through with exercise.... my doctor has been lovely, she however tells me to be kind to myself and love myself for who I am so not much push there but the endo I saw inn thursday said I’d be fine to exercise now that they have ruled out addisons etc..... just waiting for more bloods to check other bits but I feel it’s time now :)

Will need to work out a time when I can have the lounge to myself or rope DD in Grin
