My top half is getting too thin but I still need to lose more off of my bottom half?

So before I began losing weight, I was a size 8 on my top half and a 12 ish on my bottom. I've always felt very insecure about my thighs and wanted to slim them down, so ive been cutting my calories and exercising more.
However, the weight so far has all come off my top half, and I'm starting to look quite gaunt. My rib and hip bones are becoming pretty visible.

However, my thighs are still the same size as always. I want to lose more weight in the hope that it will eventually come off my thighs, but I'm worried my top half with look too bony.

Any advice?

You can't change your genetics.

No matter how much you try to loose weight from a certain spot it will not happen. Weight loss comes from the entire body.

I would say go lift weights, but you'll find that it'll make your legs grow, and you don't want them to look big, so it's not the best choice, but it's the healthier choice.
Your legs will be more defined.

You can't reduce fat from a certain area unless you go and get liposuction. I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Embrace what you have already.

Nuphonewhodis · 21/02/2019 14:51

I understand that in theory, but surely if i keep losing weight then it will eventually have to come off my thighs?

I'm really fat at the moment but used to be very skinny. However I'm exactly like you. Eventually you will lose the weight of your bottom half and if you are now very slim up top you are prob on the brink of it happening. Lots of skin brushing may encourage it.

halfwitpicker · 21/02/2019 14:57

I am exactly the same, you can see the bones in my chest and hip bones but my thighs still meet!

I'm 133lbs and feel like I could lose more - but it seems to come off my upper body first when really I want thinner legs.

Not sure how thin you'd have to get before you get thin legs.

ChocOrCheese · 21/02/2019 17:31

How about developing some upper body muscle?

FloofenHoofen · 21/02/2019 18:06

Exactly what ChocOrCheese said.
The mentality of "well if has to come off sooner or later if I keep dieting" is the wrong attitude to have.

You cannot spot reduce fat. You can't. Even if other people on here have said it will eventually come off, yes it will at the cost of looking anorexic. It's up to you really.

FloofenHoofen · 21/02/2019 18:08

Skin brushing does not reduce fat. Eating less calories than you burn reduces fat.

colditz · 21/02/2019 18:13

You may well have thin thighs if you reduce your weight enough,, but the weight that produces thin thighs might be unhealthy for you.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 21/02/2019 18:16

You are a natural pear shape - lucky you! So much healtheir than us apples.

What is your height and weight? Are you a healthy bmi? If so, I wouldn't try and mess with nature ... it will drive you mad in the end.

Flurgle · 21/02/2019 18:22

Another apple here. Accept your thighs! I personally think chunky thighs look great and hate my skinny (egg on) legs.
Lift some weights - will give definition and great for you too.

talktoo · 21/02/2019 18:24

How about working on increasing your upper body muscle mass? If you do lighter reps on the lower half you will tone but not bulk up. Do heavier reps on the upper body. And then accept your body. It's a good body.

talktoo · 21/02/2019 18:28

And bear in mind that whether thighs meet is not always about size. I've known tall size 10 women with close set legs and knock knees whose legs touch all the way to their knees. I've also known size 14 women with wide set hips whose thought don't touch.

WellThisIsShit · 21/02/2019 18:37

I do sympathise, I’ve just lost a bit of weight and yay, it’s all come off my face, not a bit off my bum or stomach ffs. But hey, my face is super skinny... a pin head on top of a blob!

Sadly I think you have to decide whether you want to continue weight loss and see how thin your top half has to be before your body finally starts addressing the bottom half, or whether to concentrate on stopping at a point where your top half looks lovely.

I know you say your bottom half is still exactly the same size, but is it really? I mean, are your harsh critiquing eyes overlooking any weight loss? Has there been any, even if it’s clearly not as much as the top half? Maybe it’s completely accurate but I’m just wondering, after all, we are all our own worst critics Flowers

DianaT1969 · 21/02/2019 18:43

Do you drink diet coke by chance? Or any other drinks/foods with artificial sweetener?
The reason I ask, is that around 5 years ago I gave up diet coke. I had been drinking 1-2 cans a day. My thighs and bum had always been chunkier than my top half. I'm not sure when I noticed, probably 6 weeks later, my bottom half had slimmed considerably without diet or exercise. The skin tone was different too - I hadn't realised how puffy they were.

Nuphonewhodis · 21/02/2019 18:44

I'm 5ft 4 and last time I weight myself (several months ago) I was 140 pounds, so right at the top of the healthy weight range. I try to avoid weighing myself but I can't have lost more than 6 pounds max so far I'd guess so still I'm still very far from being underweight

Argh I am similar OP. I look quite slim at the top but my thighs are rippling with layers of fat Sad

My BMI is generally 20-21, but my legs only looked slim for a few months when it was just under 18 i.e. I was underweight. This was due to being a broke student with little access to fresh food - long story. As soon as I had access to normal food the weight came back on.

Caveat: once all the fat melted off my legs you could see the shape of my huge bones and tendons. It wasn't a good look! So be careful what you wish for Wink

halfwitpicker · 21/02/2019 21:33

OK op, I'm the same height as you and by the sounds of it a very similar body shape.

I was 140, I'm now 133. I've lost weight all over, but only a bit from my thighs. As I said in my PP, thighs still touch, but you can see my chest bones (but only just)

It's as you say, you're hardly under weight, I think you'd have to get to around 128-130 to get the weight more off your thighs.

fishonabicycle · 22/02/2019 08:11

Some weight will eventually come off your lower half. Definitely do some sort of weight training to build some muscle - then you won't look so skinny on the top.

Gooseygoosey12345 · 22/02/2019 08:48

I have fairly chunky thighs (in comparison to the rest of my body). I found that running and weight training is the best way to slim them down and tone them up. If you're already weight training weighing yourself is not a good idea. You'll be building muscle which weighs more than fat, the scales won't change quickly and you'll get disheartened so it's a good idea not to weigh yourself. Instead, take a picture now and take another in 3 months. You have to work really hard to change a specific area, and it can be done with the right exercise, but it's more to do with toning, fat loss and muscle growth than weight loss

cheezy · 22/02/2019 08:58

I sympathise OP as I am exactly the same. I had to get really skinny at about 8.5 stone to get thinner on my bottom half - but that was years ago!

FloatingthroughSpace · 22/02/2019 09:04

You are probably a lucky winner of the genetics lottery like me and have lipoedema. Which means, diet resistant fat legs 😁
I try to console myself by imagining that it probably served my ancient ancestors well in hard times to be lugging around a "camels hump" of fat in my thighs!

Genetics matter. It took me a long time to realise that I can be a slimmer pear or a fatter pear but I will always have proportionately a big fat butt and heavy legs. I will never, ever have skinny legs even if I weighed 8 stone. The top half of me would be skeletal and my legs still chunky.
