I have changed names for this but am a regular poster. I have a problem with overeating and it is getting worse. I know I need some help but dont know where to get help from. Please can someone point me in the right direction because I really need to do something about this because it is affecting everyday life and needs to be sorted. TIA

i am no help am afraid. i was on atkins till three days ago, and was doing so well. now i seem to be going out of my way to find inapproriate things to stuff down my face.
in my case i know it is because of other things happening in my life. if i was happier, then i wouldnt be looking for comfort in food. perhaps youcould try to identify what it is that makes you constantly overeat. once you do that, it is soemtinges easier to figure out a way to stop.
good luck

thanks cylonbabe, I do need to find out why I do overeat, I am happy butwill just eat for the sake of eating

then perhaps you need to arrange times and places wher eyou simply cannot eat. iyswim
i find that when i am at home, i eat more, whereas if i am out and about, the oppurtuinty to eat doesnt arise as much. especially if i leave money at home.
or you could take up something that would occupy your mouth, like chewing gum? (nasty habit imo, so no idea why suggesting it, but just extrapolating form people giving up smoking)

Snakepit · 29/06/2007 14:31

I eat for the sake of eating too, I eat when I'm not hungry simply because I enjoy eating. This is why I'm no good on a strict diet because if I deprive myself too much I think about food non stop.

ChipButty · 29/06/2007 14:33

Can your GP advise you? I identify with you - I LOVE food and I eat when I'm happy, sad, whenever. Good luck. xx

temporaryidentity · 29/06/2007 15:00

Not sure if GP can help, maybe he can put me intouch with some sort of organisation that deals with this sort of thing.

I found Susie Orbach's books on compulsive eating helpful. Not that they stopped my comfort-eating. But they did at least help me understand what was going on!
You can also look at the Eating Disorders Association website.

slinkstar · 29/06/2007 22:23

arabica
how are you babe missed you loads since the babies how is lo? eden is 1! xx

slinkstar · 29/06/2007 22:34

need to add seriousness to the convo too
i think sometimes the only way poeple can lose weight or get their eating under control is to seriously restrict themselves, some people including me can;t do things by halfs or for life so i diet for 2 weeks or 4 weeks at a time then have a few days treat then go back again which is not sensible and probably really bad but i find its the only way i lose weight.
if you overeat alot you should maybe make sure you are full up constantly by taking an apetite suppresent, also make sure there is no food that is nice in your house, so there is no temptation.
first week will be hard work but after that you will not find it hard.
i know my diet advice is not conventional bit hope my advice helps
good luck xxx

i over eat a lot and the only diet that works for me is like the cambridge one, because i know i can have nothing except milkshake/soup, and i cant cheat where as other diets i just cheat, and because the weight loss is quick on cambridge then it keeps me keen...

have you got much weight to lose?

temporaryidentity · 29/06/2007 22:50

I have about 2 stone to lose, I just cant stop eating. I have to take control and find it so hard. Part of me wishes I could just pop a pill that will stop me feeling hungry although I know in reality that is not the answer, I know I am overeating and really dont want to get to the point where I am more overweight than I am now.
Arabica, I will look at the eating disorders website tomorrow, I really need to sort myself out

My friend has lost his weight eating unsweetened muisly soaked in fruit juice over night for his breqkfast, 6 portion of fruit for his lunch and a normal portion of vegetarian dinner (he is a vegetarian). The results were fantastic, he looks well, healthy and slim. He doesn't have to starve himself and he uses viraety of fruit and tasty dishes for dinner. I wish i could follow his example but every time i see danish pastry I loose my battle.

cylonbabe · 01/07/2007 20:37

i have lost almost two stone doing the atkins diet.
the things i like about it, basically, that i can eat. as much as i want. i just have to control the types of food i eat. and the hardest most restrictive part ist he part i find the easiest. because there is no temptation. i'm no good at eating only a cmall portion. i need to eat until i am satisfied.
of course recently, this week i have been on a bit of a carb binge. whihc is very not good, but other than this week, i am very happy withthis diet and it's results.

star1976 · 01/07/2007 21:56

Does atkins not give you bad breath and make you smelly and sweaty?

Surely all that meat can't be good foryou?

cylonbabe · 01/07/2007 22:55

yes, it does give you bad breath , but only whilst you are in ketosis. really only the first few weeks of induction. a small porice to pay imo.
tbh, you dont end up eating as much meat as you would initially think. unless you are an absolute carnivore who ate loads before hand anyway. i am not particulalry fond of meat at all. so if i must, i will eat either mincemeat, or roast beef slices. perhaps once or twice a week. usually its chicken, or some type of fish, or eggs.
fill up on vegetables. just not starchy ones like potatos.
once you get into it, it's actually quite healthy as you are eating a lot less processed stuff than before.

Hi Slink (waves) Can't believe it's a year ago. Esja is 1 on 27 July. Been an up and down year. I don't come on here often--don't have time!
Anywayhow did the eating disorders association website go, temporaryidentity? I've seen that people have made you some suggestions about eating plans that have worked for thembut it's not really about what you eat, is it? It's about the feelings that you are squashing away by eating compulsively.
Weight Watchers is working for me at present but Slimming World or a high protein plan would do just as well. As soon as I start using food instead of having my feelings the weight will all come back.

emkana · 02/07/2007 13:32

Arabica! How are you doing, and how is Esja?

Arabica · 02/07/2007 13:45

Esja has a UTI (her second one) and I have one, too. Apparently this is just a coincidence as they aren't catching. She was too unwell to have her MRI so we are still waiting. She can sit up and sort of rolls herself around and you can tell she wants to crawl--not quite there yet.
How's your LO?

emkana · 02/07/2007 13:47

Making progress, albeit slowly.

He will clap his hands now, which I'm very please about.
