The mere thought of dieting drives me to defensive eating

I don't know what's wrong with me. My diet is alright but I have put on about 5kg since last year.

I go to the gym a couple of times a month I admit for the sake of honesty and only eat out twice a month.

For some reason, whenever I even THINK about dieting, it's like my body is panicked and I am ravenous - I want to eat constantly and end up snacking lots more than I would typically.

Help me.

I hate dieting. I need to lose a LOT of weight. So I am currently on the eat less, move more train.

I'm trying to be more mindful of what I am eating. Just eating normal food. Not low carb or low fat. I'm not calorie counting. I'm just not eating half a pack of biscuits in one day. Oh, and I'm making a very conscious effort to drink 3ltrs of water a day.

I'm also doing more exercise.

I tried calorie counting once and it made me feel horrible. I felt guilty for eating anything at all! It stressed me out and I felt deprived. So now, if I want a biscuit, I'll have one. I just won't have 6.

Does that help?!

I stopped dieting many years ago and my weight didn't go up. Even now just the thought putting myself on a diet will set me off in a binge, so I don't. I think dieting doesn't work for the majority, not long term. Eating mindfully, when truly hungry and stopping when satisfied (not full) works for me. I treat all food as just food, not good or bad. I love veg and fruit.
