Weight Watchers v Slimming World

Apologies if this has been covered recently, but had a quick look and couldn't see...

I am looking at joining a weight loss club this week. I can't do it alone, I cheat myself too much by justifying foods etc...

Anyhow, based on the following factors, which do you prefer and why...

  • range/amount of foods
  • online/phone app
  • cost
  • eating out choices

I don't want to starve myself as have been there before and end up giving up. I spend a lot of time at home and need to do something - I will never ever ever be at my 'ideal' weight for what these clubs say but do need to lose (am currently about 18.5 stone). And before anyone suggests, I've done the soup diets, the meal replacement diets etc and the weight plus more goes back on, so want a way of living/eating.....

Thanks in advance

I tried Weight Watchers last year and felt like it was very similar to SW but a little more restrictive so I went back to SW where I lost 2 stone. I need to get back on plan but when I do start again it will be SW. I think if my loss slowed down then I'd switch to WW.

Groovee · 06/01/2019 15:22

I've always found SW easier to get my head round. I tried WW but just struggled.

Have lost 5.5st and maintained my loss for 9 months so far, but everyone is different. What suits one person won't suit another.

bluetit101 · 06/01/2019 15:43

I love SW, I'm rejoining my old group next week.

Couldn't get on with WW, I found it too restrictive, but I haven't been to WW for years so could have changed

Simonsaysitschristmas · 06/01/2019 16:40

Another one who found WW too restrictive and quite complex compared to SW- although I think the fact I started SW first heavily influenced that IYKWIM

Northernmum100 · 06/01/2019 16:45

SW for me. Easy to follow, can still have chocolate and ginSmile in sensible quantities. I manage to eat out without any problems and have been at my target weight now for over a year.

I think they’re now both very similar. With both plans you can have most fruit and veg without counting any points. You can also have fish/ chicken on both plans for free. On SW you can have any lean meats for free and bacon with fat removed etc whereas on WW these need to be pointed. On SW you have a choice of 2 healthy extra A (cheese/dairy) per day and 1 healthy extra B (basically some sort of fibre food from a list) whereas on WW food like this needs to come from your points.

On SW you have an extra 5-15 ‘syns’ per day and on WW you have some daily points and some weeklies to dip into.

All in all I would probably say that WW is a great looking plan, but I have seen lots of success on SW so I’m sticking with them. The WW app is much better than the SW app.

I don’t think it matters either way really. In my area the SW consultant is much more inviting and engaging than the WW leader, so more people go to SW. The groups are excruciating though. Clap clap clap over everything and they go on forever. No idea what WW groups are like nowadays!

Tightlippedmama · 10/01/2019 13:56

I agree with Bobfossil2’s analysis.

I lost 4.5stone with WW a couple of years back using their Filling and Healthy/No Count programme.

Our group closed. I fell for the old ‘I Know what to do/Can do this thing’ and a chunk of my loss has found me once again.

I signed up for the local SW group. The diet is sensible, manageable and ‘lifestyle change’ rather than Diet. The meetings were, as Bobfossil said, ghastly. Far far too long, and lots of clapping, and far too much clichéd enthusiasm for my taste.

WW meetings ( which has recently reopened locally, and I’ve rejoined) discuss a topic or an issue, set by HQ but discussion, the quality of which of course is dependant in the Leader, sorry, get with the Program Tightlipped, ‘Coach’ and the group, is, in my experience useful and thought provoking.

However, WW no longer offer the No Count option and I have found tapping everything I eat into the App a pain.

I am considering following the SW diet whilst attending the WW meetings and being in danger of being kicked out of the Brownies!

Long-time SW target member here.
Just to say,OP, that you will never be told what you "should" weigh: it's up to you to decide on your personal target weight.

Honeyroar · 13/01/2019 22:53

Ive done ww a few times. I got to goal the first time, but only had moderate success on following attempts. I do think their meetings, range of convenience foods and back up are great though.

I found SW more difficult and I can't say how much I HATED the meetings!

I think just eating real, wholesome, healthy food is a much better plan. Ditch all the diet/low fat crap that both ww &sw suggest.

Rhynswynd · 17/01/2019 05:21

The new plan and direction ww is headed seems great.
They do not advocate diet/ low fat food. Rather, they are now recommending whole and healthy food with lean protein. The points system is easy to understand and the chat/connect function to talk to other membersis very easy to use and inspiring.
Look for advice on what the companies are doing now and not their past methods as these have evolved.
