About to fall off low-carb wagon and I don't even care!!!!!!

In fact I'm throwing myself of the damn wagon at pretty high speed and looking forward to a jacket spud and beans for tea. Been doing low carb veggie diet for about 16 days. Here's how it went:

Week 1 - stuck to it, lost 10 pounds, blooming miraculous

Week 2 - stuck to it, struggled to eat anything, no appetite, felt greasy all the time, gained a pound.

Went camping at the weekend, ate some carbs, felt great.Put on about 4 pounds.

Back on it yesterday and I now feel nauseous and like I have scurvy. I'm thinking I may go back to WW but still not really eat bread, pasta, sugar etc. Think that might work? I'm beginning to think there may be no quick fix and I've lost my enthusiasm. The thought of eating another egg right now makes me want to puke!

But - has anyone managed to stick with low carb for longer than a few weeks and got results?

You need complex carbs in my humble opinion to live

cylonbabe · 26/06/2007 22:10

i've been doing atkins since january. lost almost two stones. BUT, i'm not doing veggie. so i think that's the problem really. i think low carbing and being vegetarian are very very difficult to do.
hoever you have had success, so i would try to stick it out for a bit longer. do you think the nasuea might be for other reasons ? time of th emonth, stress etc?

Complex carbs
Wholemeal bread and pasta and brown rice.
Quinoa
Lots of beans
Crackers like Dr Vogel and Ryvita.

I could never go back to eating processed carbs now. It's a way of life for all of us-kids included.

I just don't think that I could do it long term to be honest, especially as I was alternating between cheese, egg and tofu based meals. I was craving oranges, beans and pineapples! Think I could just eliminate wheat and keep rice/pasta/bread to a minimum but still eat loads of (carby) veggies and still lose weight?

You could loose weight even with the bread and pasta and fruit and veg, you just need to eat at the right times, lots in the morning, a good lunch and a light tea.
Anything like mash potatoes or soups are going to turn straight to fat without the body using any calories to process it. A nice tuna Jacket potatoes will use up 50% of the calories just pushing it through the body.
I don't believe in crash diets any more, i've spent years yoyo ing and it's not good for you or your weight loss.

Well, see I figured a diet that let me lose 10lbs in a week and then put 4lbs back on almost as quickly was probably not going to be a long term winner.

I suppose, (and it's not really rocket science) that at the end of the day it's all about eating less fat and moving around more. It's just so bloody complicated and I really wanted to believe that the low carb thing was the answer. Ho hum.....

It is the thing for many people. But you do need to stick to it. A lot of the 10lbs will be water. And the fact that you put 4lbs of water back on again (it can't be 4lbs fat in one weekend) when you went back to eating processed carbs suggests there is something about that sort of food that doesn't suit you. If I were you I'd stick to it a few more weeks and don't cheat - the cheating causes you to feel worse when you go back to it. Get back on track and then make a decision as to whether it is for you long-term. It isn't a quick fix - the initial 10lbs notwithstanding.

I'm convinced that lc eating is a good thing for me, although I've now compromised with a wheat-free, low sugar, moderate carb diet. I try to avoid all processed foods as that was the best thing about lc dieting IMO. I also think that for many people it would be a good way to control weight - we eat so much low-grade carbohydrate in our diet largely and obesess about fats which aren't always the demons they are made out to be.

bohemianbint · 27/06/2007 14:08

Oh bugger, I'm so easily swayed. Wonder if I could skip the first 2 phases of the diet and go straight to the maintenance bit which allows more variety and more fruit and veg etc. I can't live without my fruit and veg. I was prob being a bit naughty anyway as it says not to do it while you're still BF but I BF so little now I figured it probably wouldn't make any odds...

If you are hating it though BB I wouldn't bother. It's supposed to make it easier by removing sugar cravings and hunger but curbing carbs and increasing fat/protein. If that isn't the case for you try something else. No diet is perfect though.

The jury is out on the bfing rule anyway. I have been bfing DS#2 all the time I've been on lc.

bohemianbint · 27/06/2007 14:14

It was really good in that I wasn't at all hungry and didn't want to eat anything naughty, just fruit and beans (odd, I know). I'm relieved that you've been BF too, I was feeling slightly bad about it but figured it was probably alright really!
