It's only my first week of dieting. I have like 10 stone to lose. Did well all week, one bad day yesterday, weighed and it's all back on. My official weigh in date is tomorrow. Just wanna give up. First week is supposed to be the best.

You can't gain that much fat in one day, it just doesn't accumulate that quickly. If you had a day of high carbs, your body is probably holding on to a tonne of water. Drink lots of water (like 3 litres/day). Its important to have a cheat day anyway so that your body doesn't recalibrate at the lower calorie norm that you are setting. You want to give it the odd shock by have a meal of higher carbs. Just get right back on the horse and make sure your one day off doesn't turn into 3 or 4.

Are you really weighing yourself after a week of dieting??? You're in for a rough ride if you do that every week. Your body weight can go up and down by the hour! You'll drive yourself mad. Why not weigh yourself every month?

Don't get down about it and definitely don't give up! How much had you lost and how much have you put back on? I would be incredibly surprised if a single days bad eating resulted in more than a tiny weight gain, more likely what has happened is water retention/bloat (esp if you were drinking) or you may be constipated (sorry TMI!). TOTM can also cause bloat and temporary weight gain...

Equally weight loss is a marathon not a sprint so you need to give it much more than a week to see sustained results. also bear in mind that weight loss tends not to be linear so you will have times when despite sticking to the diet you stay the same for a while, times when you suddenly lose lots and times when you 'gain' (for the reasons above). So you need a strategy to not despair and fall off the wagon every time you have a minor change (I know it can be dispiriting though). I try and only weigh once a week and also have the overall trend in mind not the individual results...

I doubt you have gained it all back in one day. Drink a shed load of water today and you might be surprised when you wake up

It's only been a week!

Stop weighing yourself so often. That way madness lies.

My weight fluctuates all the time because of water retention, especially around PMS and ovulation times. I find it’s best to measure my weight loss with a tape measure rather than scales as it’s far more accurate in tracking a loss in body fat

A week is nothing. Just keep going and don't have bad days!

@gingerbe how much weight have you gained/lost?

Did you weigh yourself at the same time of day? If you're big it is not unusual that your weight first thing in the morning is 7lb lighter than last thing at night. Then it will be back to where you were by morning again. Daily fluctuations are normal.

The best time to weigh yourself is as soon as you wake, after using the toilet. Then weight yourself only at that time every time.

How bad was the bad day? You won't have put that much fat on but it may well be water retention.

It was 4 lbs

4lb is easily within daily weight fluctuation.

Always weight at the same time of day. Ideally as soon as you've woken up and used the toilet.

Oh, and incidentally, when I had 8 stone to lose (so not quite as much as your 10 stone) 4lb was easy enough to lose in a week if I was low carb, low fat and low calorie "clean eating" (ie mainly lean protein and above ground veg)

It will be mostly water especially if you had a lot of salty food the day before. It's very common for weight to fluctuate by a few pounds even over night.
