How do you switch off appetite? overeat plain foods like porridge/bread/low mood?

Over the past few years I find I’m rarely full. I have to be very careful. Where others will say phew I’ve had enough I’m thinking “I’d like some more”.

I was thinking of doing a meal replacement for breakfast and lunch e Xmas to try and restrain myself to stick to meals and avoiding turning to food.

I did my dna testing and it said I am most likely to be obese (I’m not) but I find it such a challenge to limit my portions when I see food I’m like yay party very light bulb pings in my Brain. My grandparents were obese and my father struggles. I never feel full and always leave the table thinking I would like more. I think the hormonal shift taking place during my forties has not helped as I remember also having an insatiable appetite when I was about 14.

Does anyone have any advice on how to switch off that appetite ? I find it immensely irritating. I also notice it’s correlated with low mood but I think antidepressants may have increased my appetite (!) so I avoid.

I have tried having porridge for breakfast but feel sleepy after, and also want more. I’ve tries protein for breakfast. I don’t think it’s what I’m eating but I’m not sure. I’m just greedy! If anyone can empathise I’d be grateful for them to share.

I saw a programme years ago that said overeating come mainly in three groups. Those that emotionally eat, those that always feel hungry and those that once they start can't stop. I am the latter but weigh 9 stone. The best thing for me is to distract myself until it passes (20-30 mins) or if that fails I find a square of dark chocolate helps. Yes, and water after too. I keep in mind what a normal portion is and stick to it. Also, telling myself I can have fruit later works too.

I think I feature in all three groups!

I think they delaying tactic is really helpful but has to be well thought out I think, I can play mind games with myself. I think it’s just not getting myself into that state whereby anything gets chucked into the mouth!

I really appreciate the tips and sounds like you have self managed well!

I do have high cholesterol but low blood pressure. I’ll do more research but do you eat lentils on low carb at all? I guess it’s a case of tracking the macros?

Halfwitpik was thanks for answering glad you have a glow Grin

Really interesting whether this way if life would work I’m scared by it in case I still eat loads and if it’s loads of fat then I may balloon! I’m not scared of fat I add olive oil to meals and eat cheese etc.

Appreciate the time taken to answer 😘

Switch to brown rice and pasta it keeps you fuller for longer - once you get used to eating less your stomach will shrink so you will need less to feel full! That's what I've done and lost 10lbs in 4 weeks (along with cutting out snacks and going to the gym once a week and walking for an hour twice a week - pushing a pram!).

I’m rereading all these posts as such great motivation - thanks again for all who posted. I was going well on low carb then fell of the wagon and also discovered green and blacks praline things - yep, it’s seems it hard to have just one. To be honest I think I felt so awful after a few days of over indulging in carbs I just want to get back on track again - it was heaven just not feeling hungry all the time l.
