Has anyone tried Noom?

The ad for Noom has been chasing me - on the face of it - it looks alirght but I wondered if anyone has tried it and what you thought of it?

i have plateaued and need to change of pace to lose the last stone of weight.

Yes I am on it. I have been on it for 8 weeks and find it very useful. I am new to calorie counting and regularly weighing myself So don’t have much to compare with but I find it easy and their helpful tips are useful to me.
I have lost a stone so far and am still going down although the weight loss has slowed I think that is normal.

Numberofthemouse · 30/08/2018 08:40

@Allycumpooster is it just calorie counting? I've been looking at the adds as well. I backed off when I saw the price!

Allycumpooster · 30/08/2018 09:15

Not just calorie counting no. But they do set a calorie budget according to how quickly you want to lose weight and also how much you want to lose (I guess). The emphasis is on education and lifestyle choices. It delves a lot into the psychology of eating/overeating and arms you with a lot of hints and tips for making healthier choices. There is a recipe section and pedometer, although I don’t use either. There is a coach and a chat room too which I do use and really like.
My big criticism is that although they have most British food and supermarket own brand stuff on the app the bar code reader doesn’t seem to work and also the “add food” option for adding items that are not on the app doesn’t seem to work. This is only a pain if you are eating really unusual items though. I generally work around the calorie counting by just finding a close approximation to what I have eaten if it’s not there.
To be honest what I have found most useful is the education side of the app, it is evidence based, interesting and really helpful for me to understand my eating habits and how to change them.

Thanks Ally I'll have another look!

bloopitybloop · 30/08/2018 16:27

thanks @Ally thats useful feedback!

I came to post the same thing. I lost more than a stone last year using MFP but have now regained half of it. I'm still logging everything but ignoring it! Sometimes I just need a kick up the bum (or a padlock on the fridge). I think the coaching and psychological side might help. I really need to do something as I have 4-5 stone to lose. I am disheartened by reading stuff that suggests it's almost impossible for someone who is in the obese category to get back to a normal weight Sad

So Ally thanks for the info.

To anyone considering it - I filled in the enquiry form and got a 'personal' email back saying how much I could lose. Since then I haven't been bombarded with emails but have had a couple, and now have a good money off offer - I think it's 40% off for 12 weeks? So worth filling in the initial form then waiting a week or so for a better deal!

I will come back here if I decide to do it, maybe we could support each other.

bloopitybloop · 31/08/2018 23:39

@Twotabbycats I got the same 40% or something off and decided to take the plunge and try it. I haven’t been bombarded by any emails and today had a chat with my personal Coach . Will post Moreno info in a day or two

OP posts:
Twotabbycats · 01/09/2018 00:01

Thanks @bloopitybloop I have just signed up too! I got 65% off in the end.

It thinks I can lose 22 kg by March. Seem ambitious to me!

bloopitybloop · 01/09/2018 07:25

@Twotabbycats my ambition is more modest - I need to lose a stone and it seems to think I can do it by October. Let’s see how it goes. Today is my first day back in the groove.

Allycumpooster · 01/09/2018 07:38

There is a little slider thingy that you can use to dictate how quickly you want to lose weight. I set it to just left of the hare (so quite slowly) and my calorie intake is about 1200. If I want to lose weight faster the app will reduce my calorie budget. I started all guns blazing but slowed down as I settled down and realised that weight loss is actually possible Shock. I lost 5kg in the first 4 weeks but as I plateaued a little I slowed down. I have started to move the scales again now (week 8). I find it comfortable in that I have never been hungry on this program.

tribpot · 01/09/2018 07:41

Thanks for this, it's been really helpful. I've also been hit with the ad on Facebook and thought it looked interesting, but wanted to get feedback before taking the plunge.

Twotabbycats · 02/09/2018 17:14

@bloopitybloop will be interested to hear how you get on. I got some more info today and am a bit disappointed we don't seem to get the full range of group support until after the free trial. Sneaky!

@Allycumpooster I have been calorie counting with MFP so am interested in the motivational/educational side too. Good to know it is working for you. I know what I should be eating but have difficulty sticking to it I agree about the database - I am not in the U.K. or the US so lots of things listed. And it is already a pain inputting recipes again when I have them saved on MFP!

Allycumpooster · 02/09/2018 20:31

@twotabbycats I tend to just find the closest approximation and the guess a bit on the calories. I figure if I overestimate then it doesn’t really matter too much. It is quite nice in that it remembers what I tend to eat with different foods- so for breakfast I generally have a smoothie or overnight oats and the app remembers this and usually the rough calorie guess that I made last time I put it in.
TBH I haven’t used any other calorie counting apps so I don’t have anything to compare Noom with. It is working for me, I know what to eat my problem was that I was eating way too much and didn’t even realise it Blush I eat about half of what I did 8 weeks ago and I’m not hungry at all.

Twotabbycats · 06/09/2018 23:18

Yes @Allycumpooster I am going for approximation too but the logging is driving me a bit batty. I am still logging on MyFitnessPal and I think that is more accurate and easier to use. I don't understand why the Noom app doesn't default to 0 or the last amount of something I ate. Instead the starting point is eg 900g of sugar in my tea and other improbable things! Also I have the app on my phone and iPad but they don't seem to sync, which is a pain. However I have lost half a kilo already just by thinking more about what I eat so I'm not unhappy, especially as I have set the weight loss speed pretty slow. The question is whether I can stick to it, as I've been losing and regaining the same kilo for a while!

I don't suppose we get a better version of the logging section after the 2-week trial?

bloopitybloop · 06/09/2018 23:40

Sorry for disappearing ! It’s been a busy week. - so far am not pressed with Noom -
I have been logging in MFP and as someone with low vision I can’t read anything on Their app!

OP posts:
Allycumpooster · 07/09/2018 12:10

I know the logging is a pain, I have got a lot quicker at it as I have memorised what calories are in what meal choice - shacksuka = 300 calories etc. That way I don’t need to weigh it all out just go to the calorie section. I do wish it would remember the amounts but I do like that it remembers what I have with various meals.
I am on week 10 and I have lost 7kg amazingly easily and although I still have 4 or so to go I feel great.

Allycumpooster · 07/09/2018 12:23

My other small gripe is the typos. It sometimes feels like the app needs a good proof read Grin.
I do enjoy the sense of humour and the feed back from the group and the coaches.
The functionality of the app doesn’t change when you pay it’s just the group. At least not so I noticed. The groups is full of a real mix of people, mainly middle aged ladies like me but some apparently very high powered, active individuals, some with only a few lbs (it is American) to lose, some who are clearly in it for the long haul with stones to lose.

bloopitybloop · 07/09/2018 18:07

I had signed up for a month and have cancelled renewal - with its lack of accessibility it’s unusable for me which is a shame!

OP posts:
RedRoses · 10/10/2019 16:50

I was wondering about NOom but having read this it seems very similar to WW which is 12.99 per month.

RachelPPPP · 11/07/2020 12:39

Noom is a scam. I signed up for their free trial for 2 weeks back in February and it only gave me access to a couple of things. It said that more features would be released to me after a week. I was unable to accurately assess if it would suit me and what it was really offering. After a couple of weeks the App stopped working. The message said "Opps we got an error this may be caused by your phone not being connected to the internet. Please try again."

I am connected to the internet and I have adequate data. I tried many many times and it never worked. I gave up because I assumed that the app was no longer working because your company went bust or something. Or maybe your company stopped functioning because of the virus.

I have never been able to use the App since. Not after changing the password, nothing. But Noom is charging me for a full subscription! It's charging me £99 every four months for something that doesn't work. When I go onto their web page and log in it says I have a subscription till 11/02/2020 and indicated a payment was taken on 07/02/2020 and it does not show the £99 payments it has taken. It says in you can only cancel your subscription via the App!! Which doesn't work. There are no customer support numbers to call or chat services. You can send an email but you just get an automated reply. It's a totally and utter con! DO NOT SIGN UP!!!!

Chillywilly93 · 02/08/2022 03:52

Noom isn't for everyone but it did help me for a few months I would say. I like that it doesn't just tell you what to do but actually tries to help you understand why you have certain eating habits etc. I don't use it anymore but found it useful for a few months. Their Trustpilot has lots of good reviews still

I’ve started Noom a week ago. I think it’s very useful actually. I like the app very much overall. A couple of things I could be picky about. But I think the philosophy is very well thought out. The “lessons” are quick and easy but actually sone of them are pretty good. You can do a 2 week trial to see if it’s your cup of tea first.

I have tried every way to lose weight under the sun over the last 15 years but found them all difficult and never maintained it. Noom seems disarmingly simple but I am hoping effective. Though I think the rate of weight loss will be slow, that may be a good thing. It’s also pretty easy to do and non-obsessive and over-controlling. No food group is excluded. You really can adjust it to your needs and lifestyle very easily.

AmeAmy · 06/08/2022 16:57

If I was going to be picky - some of the lesson language is a bit “yay” juvenile! But I think I’ve got used to the jollyness a bit more 😀.
