here is the orig thread www.mumsnet.com/Talk?topicid=2350&threadid=330488&stamp=070603191352

Got so many great tips from it, wondered if could start a one about fitness/exercise/diet maybe?

Here's what I do:

try and walk everywhere (but live really near school, so don't do much!)

do a class 3 x a week when ds at playgroup

and I want to start getting up early and doing 30-40 mins on my X-trainer followed by my (fab new!) beauty routine and shower! but lack willpower to get self out of bed!

any tips? how do you stay fit?

I am not exactly slimmer of the year but my excuse is that I have jsut had a baby.... well, she's 11 weeks so I'll have to start practising what I preach!

Anyway, things I do which help (if I keep them up):

Walk everywhere
Drink gallons of water - hunger and thirst often confused
Try to limit really lardy things like cheese, salami, choc etc
Eat at least 5 a day
Watch the booze - I LOVE LOVE LOVE wine but alas it is laden with calories and weakens my resolve in other areas
Wear something which fits every week - not all the time, but if you try on a pair of trousers or whatever and they are tight, you know what needs done. Doesn't work post pregnancy etc though when your body is still recovering. I find that if I wear too many things without zips, I can slide towards lard very quickly.

Loved the grooming thread. Hope we can get some good ideas from this one.

Great idea for a thread. I try to :

  1. Walk every day. I get up before the rest of the family and walk for 30-40 minutes. It's winter here in NZ so hard going when it's cold and dark out, so I'm only averaging 3-4 mornings a week at the moment.
  2. Drink lots of water, avoid any other cold drinks (juice, coke etc)
  3. Eat a good breakfast and lunch (hard when you're a SAHM and can't be bothered with much more complicated than toast)
  4. Avoid too much snacking, and have healthy snack options in the house (nuts, fruit, vegs). Sadly that means no choc, cakes or ice cream.
  5. Cut down on bread and other carbs, especially at night.
  6. Cut right down on booze.

I've been following the basic principles of the CSIRO diet, which is high-protien, low carb.

I try to walk every day - 20 minute walk to school so I do it at least once, sometimes twice a day.
I drink 5+ water a day
I take good quality vitamins - if you are going to take them take good ones ....
I cook things from scratch and avoid processed food - and go for brown rice over white, grainy breads over white, that sort of thing.
I think about the GI level of my food.

My only real vice is coffee - If I am at a cafe I see my coffee as my treat, and so don't get the sticky bun

ZacharyQuack, where are you in NZ? I have just moved over the ditch to Aus, was in Auckland for 5 years. There are a few NZ MNers ...

ZacharyQuack · 04/06/2007 05:31

Hi ghosty, I'm in Wellington. Where in Aus are you now? I was in Sydney a couple of weeks ago and the weather was sooo lovely.

ghosty · 04/06/2007 05:53

Run 3x a week.
Don't have biscuits, etc in the house so am less tempted.
Try to have smaller portions or stop eating when I'm full, not have to clear the plate.

dinny · 04/06/2007 21:23

run for how long?
