I can’t lose this weight, what’s the one piece of equipment I could have at home that would help?

I’m not classed as overweight but I’m obly 5 foot 2 with a TDEE of just over 1200 calories. Up to last year I weighed 8’10 which was ok but would’ve been better at 8’7 but I wasn’t going to the gym, that was my normal weight.

Last year I went through a really really bad time and wasn’t eating well at all. My weight dropped to about 7 1/2 stone. I put all the weight back on though I’m november/December. After Xmas I was 9’4 and to me it feels fat. Tried slim fast, calorie counting etc but I couldn’t shift it. Managed to get to 9 stone but I can’t lose it. Last weekend was 9,2. Have been at centre parcs this week, was cycling every day at quite a pace, at least half an hour, was in the pool for 3 hours every day (obviously not 3 hours solid swim but moving constantly l etc) and did some activities so more active than at home and iv put on 2lb!!! I did not eat more than normal, I actually ate less as was busy all the time.

I can’t go to the gym (can’t afford it an a LP and no support) I hate any kind of ‘dvd class’. I always walk 10-12,000 steps a day and according to my fit burn approx 2000 calories a day (I think it’s lying to me) I need to get my calories down I KNOW this. I was eating 1500 roughly, sometimes under but I can’t eat less than 1200 a day as it makes me so sick and dizzy.

I’m thibking of getting a small piece of equipment at home and do that maybe half an hour every day? A bike would be easier to store... but I think I heard a rowing machine was the best for over all? Any suggestions or thoughts on this? Would half an hour (on top of my normal daily routine) every day start shifting these lbs??

Rebounder? One of those mini trampolines. Easy to store, can exercise watching tv & with weights you get toned all over.

EvaHarknessRose · 04/08/2018 16:05

I think you might be getting into a yo yo dieting loop. Try ‘settling’ for 9 stone right now, eating enough (but with gaps between meals and snacks and no eating after dinner) and getting into an exercise groove. Focus on other goals. Then in future, if dieting, never aim for more than 5% weight loss and then maintain it.

That would be my advice, unless you want to be 10 7.

Skipping rope. There's a reason boxers use them, skipping is hard work and great training.

Also, cheap and easy to store.

Maverick66 · 04/08/2018 16:08

A good sports skipping rope.

10 mins here and there through out the day will make a difference.

Crazyladee · 04/08/2018 16:09

The experts always say it's 80% diet and 20% exercise with weight loss. Why not focus on your food? Do you log your calories accurately by weighing and measuring?
You may have been active whilst at centre parks but no amount of exercise such as leisurely biking would make up for eating and drinking out on holiday. For me anyway!

To answer your question I would say treadmill for running or jogging.

Ilmb · 04/08/2018 16:10

I have a big trampoline in the garden for the dc but I find it jars my back, would a mini one be the same?

I actually bought a skipping rope a week ago and have been doing that. I thought it would be a breeze as I was great as a kid.... now I can only do 10 skips in one go before stopping Grin

eva that’s sort of what I meant upthread about not wanting to starve or drop even more calories and getting too obsessed... I would be happy with 9 stone right now. I just feel like Iv ballooned. I tried to blame it on the heat and water retention but a week ago we had an epic storm and the temp dropped for a couple of days and made no difference Grin

I definitely did not over eat whilst I was away, I cooked whilst I was there for didn’t eat out once, I wasn’t leisurely cycling, we did laps of the whole park each day at enough of a pace to tire me (and them) out, we then ‘leisurely’ rode when we were going to and from activities/the pool etc. That’s what I can understand, how I put on weight when I ate less and did ALOT of excercise. Well, a lot for me!

I log all my food on my Fitbit app.

I've got myself a skipping role and some kettle bells, had no idea kettle bells would get my heart rate going.
I'm only on small ones at the moment as I'm not particularly strong.
Press ups and triceps dips on stairs also.

minipie · 04/08/2018 16:16

Exactly, thyroid won't show unless specifically tested for. Sounds like you probably had infection markers tested, not thyroid.

WeAreGerbil · 04/08/2018 16:19

Yes elliptical is cross trainer. There may be some kettlebells exercises that aren't great for you back but others will be fine, and should help with your core. I use the Fitify app as you can skip exercises you don't want to do.

RaindropsOnKittens43 · 04/08/2018 16:22

I used to do quite a lot of running up and down the stairs OP, when unable to get out for exercise. You can set a number of repeats amd when you get bored, try going up 2 at a time to make your legs and core work (have your hand by the rail for safety, but don't use it, if you can manage without).
I have similar issues, eat quite a lot less than I need in theory (based on height, age and current weight), have plenty of energy, but cannot shift a few pounds that make me a bit chubby. I comfort myself that I'll survive really well if there's some sort of food shortage!

HopeClearwater · 04/08/2018 17:35

Do you drink a lot of tea and coffee, or coke, wine, fizzy drinks etc.? As I said it's much easier to lose weight without too much caffeine

Sorry to hijack thread but please could you elaborate on this, I mean the point you made about caffeine?

NicoAndTheNiners · 04/08/2018 17:41

Most effective thing will be the piece of equipment you use.

For me that’s a treadmill. Put it on 6% incline, 6kph (fast walk) and in 45 mins I’ve burnt about 400 calories. I lost 2 stone in under 3 months doing that.....I needed to, my bmi was 32.

The gym instructors always say the rowing machine is the best bit of kit for burning calories but I’m bored shitless after ten mins and just don’t like it so don’t use it.

Ilmb · 04/08/2018 20:36

When I used to do the gym I found the rower the most satisfying but I find all gym equipment boring!!

I agree with PP that you’ve gone as far as you can with restricting calories / cardio. It looks like your diet is quite high in carbs. Are you veggie? If so is it for health or ethical reasons? If it’s health you might want to consider adding some animal protein back into your diet. If not, could you eat eggs or even whey protein shakes? Have you ever tried a lower carb diet?

As well as increasing protein also look into weight training. Increasing muscle mass improves body composition. If you can’t get to a gym look up body weight exercises. You can do these at home without equipment and can burn calories while increasing strength.

Ilmb · 04/08/2018 20:48

Am I really high in carbs?? I don’t eat bread or rice or pasta. Etc.... I know there’s carbs in granola obviously... Iv been vegetarian since I was a child, could never eat meat again.

I was making smoothies for breakfast and everyone told me it was too high I’m carbs as I put banana in it so I stopped! What health benefits are in whey shakes ? Other than protein I mean? I do eat eggs just not dry day.

TrX system. Easy to store. Cheap (about £15 in decatholon) loads of excersise and a total body wprk out.

But perhaps just focusing on maintaining for now. And get things checked

SlightlyTired · 05/08/2018 09:37

Sorry OP, just saw your question. I strength train probably 4-5 times a week but only for half an hour at a time. I follow fitness blender workouts (free on you tube). I also try and keep my step count up generally during the day.

Ilmb · 05/08/2018 15:17

I remember quite a few years back I used to have a cross trainer and I used to do it when the dc were in bed. I only stopped as it was too loud when they were asleep. Now is different as I can do it in one room and say after work...

I’m looking at a rower or an elliptical trainer. I think the elliptical would be better for my back? Iv seen some online that are 2 in 1? So a bike aswell as the stand up thing so I was thinking it keeps things mixed up, as I know you can become stale mate after a while. Or am I looking at that a bit clouded? I will keep doing what I’m doing with the bits of excercise I do at home plus keeping steps up and will also be asking for blood test in the mean time..

I'd get a kettlebell.
