Where do you find motivation?

I'm 3 stone over weight. Been saying for 3 / 4 years I want to loose weight but never got beyond a few pounds. What method works and is easy to stick too?

I really need to do something about it. Is a class the answer?
I found SW patronising and targeted at people who love chips. Is WW any better?

What about online?

Is Fitbit and my fitness pal the answer?

I know what you mean, finding the drivers really hard. I was waking up every mornin,g looking in the mirror and saying 'I need to lose weight' but not actually doing anything about it.
I don't know what pushed me to actually take action in the end but for some reason I downloaded an app that was advertised on FB and haven't looked back. It is calorie counting but notify fitness pal. There is a coach and daily challenges and lessons. I find it really works for me.

There aren't any easy ways, but going over your food and exercise habits might be one way forward. Don't think "fitbit" or an app will do the trick for you, it's more about undertaking lifestyle changes.

Allycumpooster · 03/08/2018 09:26

A lifestyle change is fundamentally important for any sustainable weight loss but I disagree that you can't get the motivation from an app. Ultimately you have to start somewhere so if you decide to start by increasing your daily steps (using a fitbit) or by downloading an app and counting calories or by buying a book or joining a class. At least you start.
Long term sustainable lifestyle change is hard but it is worth it.

I lost exactly the same amount of weight as you and have maintained it for years. With Paul Mackenna I Can Make You Thin, it really works!! I don't like the title I'm slim not thin but everything else about it makes sooo much sense !! Have a look at it , it really got me motivated!

I found that the first few pounds are the hardest because you don't really notice them, it hasn't made much of a difference to your clothes size, other people haven't noticed, and it's such a shock to your body that you're starving and thinking of food all the time.

The trick is to get past that and KEEP GOING. The best motivation of all is your clothes being too big, buying or wearing things you wouldn't have previously worn (in my case anyway), looking in the mirror and seeing a collar bone and no double chin.
Having more energy, feeling happier...

And yes I definitely recommend MFP, you can't lie to it!

The worst thing is to think you are starving to lose weight, it\lll just go b ack on when you finish. That's why Paul Mackenna is the answer, there is no starving (it's not necessary and it's unhealthy)

You just eat when you are hungry and stop when you are full, you learn to listen to your body, BUT you have to eat\chew slowly, sitting down , not in front of a screen. really enjoying your food. What is amazing is how little food it takes to fill you up when you eat like that! It's great because if you forget at one meal (or for a week or whatever) you just go back on it.

Allycumpooster · 03/08/2018 16:04

Ppeat, the app I use calls it ‘mindful eating’. The evidence for it is really good even down to the fact that people eat less when they can hear themselves chew! If you eat in front of a screen you are likely to eat 25% more. It’s really helpful when trying to lose weight to not think in terms of food you can have and food you can’t but more in terms of you can eat any food but the portion sizes need to be managed carefully. I have stopped using dinner plates in favour of side plates to help me with managing portion sizes.

I refuse to dump last year’s expensive clothes. My meanness is my motivation.

Park run weekly, no alcohol, cut out bread & pasta.

fishonabicycle · 03/08/2018 20:17

Whatever you do must be sustainable for your life. It (apparently) takes about 3 weeks to form a new habit. Set reasonable goals - you won't lose 3 stones in a month, but if you eat well, and exercise a reasonable amount, by next year you will be a different shape altogether. Don't give up if you have a bad day and eat/drink too much. Just back to your usual habits the next day.

ppeatfruit · 04/08/2018 08:41

Yes Ally That sounds a good app. Beyond Chocolate says the same, as long as you eat plenty of fresh foods when you're hungry!! The other important thing is to drink LOTS of water and herbal teas between meals (even more important in this weather!).

staycalmer · 04/08/2018 08:47

Ally what's the app called. I've creeped up in the past 2 years having changed jobs from one that kept me on my feet for 12 hours a day to sitting on my ass in an office with treats everywhere. I try, tell myself every day I won't be tempted, started meal prepping other week but because meals are lighter I'm hungrier. Always starting tomorrow. So fucking hard

ppeatfruit · 04/08/2018 08:52

stay Paul Mackenna has an app too, books and DVD's etc. I don't know if Beyond Chocolate does.

Yes it's definitely harder when you're in front of a computer a lot! It also creeps on with age believe me!

I use Noom, I really like it. TBH it was just the one that facebook advertised at the same time as I was thinking 'I need to do something about this'. It could have been any weight loss app so maybe I just got lucky in that I found something that suits me first time.
I have lost 11lbs in a month and got through some serious wobbles along the way with the help of their coach.
