Is this a healthy breakfast?

Put on quite a bit of weight since starting antidepressants a year ago. Need to lose it. I'm having this lovely shake for breakfast - ingredients:
One banana, 1 tablespoon peanut butter, 1 tablespoon cacao powder and topped up with almond milk. I drink about 2/3 pint in the morning and it fills me up until 1-2 o clock.

Is this very unhealthy? I'm generally trying to eat less carbs and sugar except for this shake.

It's fine and it's a lot better than nothing at all or eating pastries/sugary cereal/jam on toast. It's not overly sugary as peanut butter and cacao powder aren't high in sugars. It's got one of your five-a-day and almond milk is usually fortified with calcium. However, peanut butter is not a complete protein unless eaten with grains, such as oats or wholemeal toast.

Thanks that's really helpful. Would it improve the health benefits of the shake if I also added oat bran? Also do you think I could have this daily and still lose weight if I eat carefully for my other meals?

I'd halve the banana and freeze the other half for tomorrow, and add a cube of frozen spinach (you won't be able to taste it). Be really careful on the bp measurement too as too much good fat will still hinder weight loss. Also, make sure it's a natural one so no sugar, palm oil etc, pip and nut is the best I think. Only add oats if you want to add carbs.

Yes for adding oat bran. But if you don't want the carbs, then perhaps swap almond milk for cow's milk? And then add a teaspoon of ground almonds for the flavour (and extra protein).
Regarding having it daily.... try it for a while and see. No two people are the same so what works for one might not work for another and vice versa! If the weight isn't budging after a couple of weeks, you can always change.

If you are drinking that in the morning and it's keeping you full until 1/2pm then it sounds absolutely ideal Smile

Thank you everyone for the advice. I will continue with this for a bit longer and see how it goes.

Sounds fine.

Although MN will tell you you may as well have a milkshake, if it fills you up and you watch the amount you have it's fine
