Is this a reasonable food diary?

I'm overweight by three stone. I'm unfit, kinda (okay a lot) lazy, fatigued all the time and just generally feeling shite.

I've really come to a point where I've just had enough. I've tried diets before and obviously failed. I am a massive binge eater. I eat for boredom, stress, comfort, whatever.

I'm not going to calorie count. Or weigh food. I get too restrictive and obsessive and then end up failing and going on a binge.

I've been reading 'Never binge again' by Glenn livingstone which has definitely enabled me to reflect on why I overeat and given me some mental positivity to tackle it.

Here is my food diary for the past three days. Where could I improve? What am I missing? Is this good enough to lose some weight? I've been drinking lots of water.

Friday -

Breakfast - Crunchy nut cornflakes with blue milk, An apple and a black coffee (no sugar)

Lunch - Broccoli and Stilton soup, 2 soup lies of toast (white bread - I know I know!) Cucumber and tomatoes.

Dinner - Pasta with Salad (Mixed leaf lettuce, Toms, cucumber, spoonful of colslaw)

(Evening - 4 double gins with lemonade, BAD IDEA as I ate a slice of quiche and a chunk of pork pie after) I don't actually often drink but if I do have a couple of glasses I will make sure I've got something healthy to snack on after -lesson learned!)

Saturday

B - Crunchy nut cornflakes and black coffee

L - Broccoli and Stilton soup
2 toast and salad

D - Vegetable pizza with Salad, beetroot and hummus.

After dinner - a banana and few strawbs

Sunday
B- 2 boiled eggs, 2 toast, rocket and small sprinkle of grated cheese.

L- Slice of vegetable pizza and a banana

D - One Youngs gasto basa fillet with new pots, broccoli, sweetcorn and roasted tomatoes

Breakfast today - I've got shot of the sugary cereal and had overnight oats with grated apple, half a banana, a spoonful of peanut butter and a sprinkle of cinnamon.

So this is really a starting point. It's a massive improvement on my usual diet which in a day before was - 2 cheese & ham toasties at mid morning, crisps and cake mid afternoon, burger and chips for dinner with heaps of choclate and biscuits in the eve. No water. Sugary coffee and coke throughout the day. Not a fruit or veggie in sight.

Even if I get no replies, I just need to get this down somewhere. So it's helping me all the same.

Once I can crack thsee terrible food habits and I can start to look at my exercise!

Well done op. How much is that altogether, if you don’t mind me asking?
I’ve managed to lose a lb. need to up my efforts.

LiveLifeWithPassion · 24/05/2018 09:11

Just saw your update Smile
It’s fab!

When your buying things at the supermarket always look at the ingredients. They will list per 100g and per serving. Remember 4g of sugar is roughly a teaspoon full. For example Slimming world ( at least when I did it ) used to go on about fat free Muller light yogurts like they were the ultimate slimming food , that you could eat as many as you liked etc etc. Except if you look at the sugar content you'd be eating spoonfuls of sugar a day. Hate to say this but crunchy nut cornflakes are very sugar loaded as well. Try putting what you'd usually eat in your bowl but before you put milk on weigh your portion and work out how from the packet how much sugar you had been eating. I'm shocked when I do it !

FloatyFlo · 24/05/2018 16:36

Well ahead of ya Namethecat Wink
Haven't had Crunchy nut cornflakes for ages now. Well not ages but I feels like it 😂

Have you thought about getting a portion plate to help?

I love mine. It's similar to this one. I struggled for years with my weight (but it turns out mine was based on intolerance as well as bad portion sizing).

Best of luck on your journey. You are making great steps in the right direction!

Is this a reasonable food diary?
FloatyFlo · 24/05/2018 17:01

Well I've been weighing and measuring everything now anyway so I'm happy with my portion sizes however I love that plate!

I've noticed that when I eat something it fills me up now whereas before I would have had a much bigger portion to fill me up. I would have had 3 eggs scrambled and at least 2 toast before (and would've gone on to have something after), but now just 2 eggs with some veg and no toast is plenty.

Actually, your body would really prefer you to drink alcohol, and it will then burn that in preference to anything else. Errr, no.

The low carb diets will go the same way as the low fat diets did a few years ago. They'll be debunked as yet another diet fad. Of course a low carb diet improves your blood sugar etc. - calorie restriction relative to what you were eating before is the reason. Low fat diets have the same positive effects. The clue is to eat healthier, not drastically restrict one good group.

BIWI · 26/05/2018 17:20

Evidence, please?

BIWI · 26/05/2018 17:21

Oh, and bollocks. HTH.

Highhorse1981 · 26/05/2018 17:30

BestBeforeYesterday

Totally agree.

Check out the low carb threads. So many are people returning because they never managed to lose their goal on the previous or they so craved carbs after achieving their goal weight that they binged on loads of junkie weight and put on weight.

It’s a fad.

Plus it doesn’t work for people who are really in to exercising. You can’t run a marathon without carb loading. BIWI will huff and puff over this, but it’s the truth.

Grasslands · 26/05/2018 21:14

standford university lecture on which diet is best. it's fairly academic and is an actual class lecture.
the bottom line is....it depends on your individual body and it's insulin resistance.
it does explain why some diabetics remain fat.

the other series which was a real eye opener and goes well with this research is this video by the university of California

which details a bit more about the liver and the insulin resistance and weight loss.

personally i'm glad to have listened to the Stanford lecture first (although dry) but the California lecture has a more tv like format.

beforeihit30 · 27/05/2018 11:15

So I haven’t read the full thread (soz) but I have been reading your posts OP and just wanted to say well done and more power to you in focusing on healthy eating for the long term and not just weight loss. I’ve been in a similar spot, trying to fix unhealthy habits (including unhealthy/unsustainable approaches to weight loss). For me, this includes full fat everything (forget blue milk, I have gold top!) but it works for me - I have reduced certain carbs because I find them ‘empty’, as in they don’t satisfy me, so if I have them it is purely for taste so it’s not often, white bread is a good example, it doesn’t fill me, I get bloated and then I’m hungry really quickly after!

Best of luck for your continued journey, will keep following this Smile

MinaPaws · 27/05/2018 16:54

One thing that makes low carb worth trying is that you really don't feel 'hungry" when you're not hungry. You know those obsessive cravings you get on a diet or when eating to maintain or gain, when you include refined carbs? They just vanish. Yesterday I had 1200 cals and felt absolutely fine on it - didn't even want an apple or cup of tea in the evening. Normally I'd be growling for a bowl of cereal or fruit but it's as though an off button has been clicked in the brain. I really like that. It makes it easier.

BIWI · 27/05/2018 16:59

@Highhorse 1981

(Sorry for derailing your thread @FloatyFlo)

The reason people keep coming onto the Bootcamp threads is that they have more weight to lose than they can lose in a ten week Bootcamp. If you don’t like or understand Bootcamp stop dissing what goes on there. There are a lot of posters who have a fair bit of weight to lose and it works for them. If you don't like or rate it that’s your prerogative.

BIWI · 27/05/2018 17:02

... and you can be an elite athlete and low carb. See Drs Volek and Phinny who have done much research into this
