Hello
Well earlier on today I did my first run, and it was bloody hard, but I did it!
I'm running to lose weight as I'm obese. I've not done any exercise, apart from walking, for a long time, so would like to ask what other exercises I could do that won't wipe me out completely!
TIA

Anyone?

Well done! I’ve just finished week 2. I haven’t really got time to do anything else, though I’ve heard Pilates is good to help with toning.

CurvyInAllTheWrongPlaces · 07/05/2018 09:56

Hi Lookslike, well done you! Is week two a lot harder? I'm really determined to stick to it, I need to get fit. Yeah I was doing Pilates before, only a few lessons, but because of time issues I had to stop, but I'm hoping to start again soon. I was thinking of doing some exercise at home, I couldn't face going to a gym!
I think I will have a look at some easy beginner HIIT videos.
Good luck with your journey Lookslike!

No, I can’t face a gym either.

I thought that week 2 was going to be impossible (1m30 running) but the longer rest breaks help. Not looking forward to the 3 minute run in week 3 which I start this evening. It’s been 28 degrees here, I’m going to melt!

LooksLikeImStuckHere · 07/05/2018 18:09

What’s a HIIT video?

CurvyInAllTheWrongPlaces · 08/05/2018 21:18

High-intensity interval training (HIIT), also called high-intensity intermittent exercise (HIIE) or sprint interval training (SIT), is a form of interval training, a cardiovascular exercise strategy alternating short periods of intense anaerobic exercise with less intense recovery periods.

There are lots on YouTube.
Yes it was 28 here too! I don't do to well in the heat so had to wait for it to cool down before I did my run. Hope your run went well

OP posts:
LooksLikeImStuckHere · 09/05/2018 21:55

It did, the three minutes went much faster than I thought it would Smile

Hope yours went well too. I think next door may complain if I leap up and down on the floorboards doing the HIIT Grin

CurvyInAllTheWrongPlaces · 09/05/2018 23:00

Yay! Good for you! My run, yesterday, was harder than the first but I still managed to do it all, I think my body is screaming at me to stop, saying "What the hell are you doing!"
But I'm very determined to keep going, just can't see how I will run for a full 30 minutes though Confused

No, me neither!

I found a good app which cuts in over your music to tell you what to do. I hated watching the clock as it seemed to go slower.

I set up a playlist where the song length matched the length of each run (easier when longer). I chose songs I knew really well but loved and when running I concentrated on the song rather than the time. It did help!

Also, slowing down helped. I kept going too fast and getting tired out.

We can do this!

CurvyInAllTheWrongPlaces · 10/05/2018 00:36

Yes I have music too and then the talking cuts over it, will try to match the song with the length of the run, thanks for the tip!

You're right, we can do this!

Hi! I started C25K in Jan and completed in March and now run 5k 3/4 times a week, it's a great programme. I still can't do 5k in 30 mins mind, PB is 34 mins, but I wouldn't worry about timings.

Don't know if its helpful to you but here is what I do exercise wise (i'm still about 1.5 stone overweight).

10 min yoga every morning
On running days: 5k run + squat challenge + ab challenge + some arm exercises with light weights
Non running days: squat challenge + ab challenge + arm exercises + a mini work out I made which includes wall sit, heel toe bounces, donkey kicks, leg raises etc, I do 3 sets of that.
Plus a 30 min yoga routine (on amazon prime at home) twice a week.

CurvyInAllTheWrongPlaces · 12/05/2018 09:21

Wow 3stonedown that's amazing, well done!

Did you find it very difficult each new running week? I've just done my first run on week 2 and even though I did it, I found it quite difficult, I think I need to get into a rhythm with my breathing and then it may be easier?!

Your exercise plan looks good, but hard, did you do that straight away with the running or incorporated it in slowly?
Thanks

I found each increase bloody hard but manageable if that makes sense. Top tip would be not to look ahead at the plan, it's over whelming and you'll think you can't do it but you absolutely can. I think it was week 7 I found that I wanted to run after she said stop so I just kept going and run 5k.

I was doing my mini routine before running then added the running and added squats sit ups and arms about a month after I finished the c25k. It sounds a lot but I space it out (you're probably not meant to do that but family life means I just end up doing bits inbetween) so I might do squats then sort DDs breakfast then do sit ups etc

CurvyInAllTheWrongPlaces · 12/05/2018 17:28

Thanks 3.

I haven't done any exercise for a long time so I'm trying to incorporate more but am weary as I don't want to over do it and then find I can't do the next run.

I did do a beginner HIIT routine the day after the second run on the first week and really paid for it the next day and haven't really done much else, about from walking to and from work Mon-Fri.
I guess I will have to keep trying different things.

I would stick to the running for now then and you can slowly introduce other forms. I think swimming is great to go with running so could you try going one of the days you're not running

CurvyInAllTheWrongPlaces · 13/05/2018 13:07

Yes that is the conclusion I came to, I think it will be better to establish the running first.

I can't swimBlush

OP posts:
3stonedown · 14/05/2018 09:24

Ah ok I would stick to the running then and you will probably feel up to more as you get further along the programme

whitershadeofpale · 14/05/2018 11:49

I did the first day on Saturday and am going to do day 2 tonight. I tried once before years ago and only managed 2 of the circuits Blush as my calves burned so much.

I've been doing a lot of yoga lately and have really felt my body changing but wanted some cardio to go alongside (I'm a few stone overweight). I felt so proud of myself and am determined to keep it up this time.

MyFamilyAndOtherAnimals1 · 14/05/2018 12:00

Well done OP! Running is really good for mental health as well, (after you've finished the run!) so I'm sure you'll feel better all round Smile I've got two other less-strenuous exercise options; one is cycling - if you live near somewhere you can cycle (or can drive somewhere with a bike) and if you can get hold of a bike, it's well worth it. And the other is different types of walking - so (if it's possible) getting down to the seaside and having a walk/run/general prance around on the sand/ in the sea is wonderful, or hill walking with a rucksack is also really good exercise. - Try different things and keep it varied!!

CurvyInAllTheWrongPlaces · 17/05/2018 21:52

Hi everyone, sorry have had a busy few days at work.

I completed week 2 yesterday and I feel very good about that! Grin

Whiter, well done for starting again, maybe take it at a slower pace this time? That is what I have done and it seems to be going ok.

Thanks Myfamily, yes it really is good for my mental health, I'm finding that I'm sleeping better and making healthier choices too, which is a bonus.

Yes I do have a bike and I'm going to go riding with the kids at least once a week, hopefully more if time allows. As a family we do go out quite often, but as I'm working and studying at the moment that has taken a bit of a back seat, luckily I only work term time, so we are planning a couple of days out this half term.
