Hi ladies. Well I am officially fat. 5 foot nothing and according to hospital scales 13 stone. That was 4 weeks ago and I’ve definitely gained. I’m 30 next year and i do not want to be fat at 30. Please help! I need to get started. Slimfast? Vegan? 5-2? No idea which.

Hi
Ive been battling with 13 stone too.
I had great success with 5:2 and couch to 5k.. unfortunately i had another baby and now back at 13 stone. (Baby is now 18 months so cant really use that excuse anymore..)
Started doing runs again this week and feel more motivated.

FluffyPinkCloud · 05/05/2018 07:04

@wetsnow I was using my 18 month old as an excuse too. 5-2 maybe the way to go then.

Try RH Fitness on Facebook. £4 a month for lots of non-nonsense info, great support groups etc. Based purely on healthy eating at an amount of calories appropriate for you, and encourages exercise etc alongside.

13 stone with a 17 month old here too. I have previous had success with my fitness pal and logging everything I ate and all my exercise. But this time I have downloaded the app but not started filling it in. I really want to get to a healthier weight before ttc in a year or so but i need a kick up the backside.

I'm not a fan of diets (SW syns etc) personally. It takes too much headspace. You probably know the food and drink to cut out and understanding your triggers for snacking helps. Getting enough sleep is important. I put on weight when I had insomnia because I was so tired all the time and I was up and awake for about 20 hours a day - hence more meals.
I eat low carb now because I know that carbs make me hungry and don't fill me up. There's a new low carb bootcamp starting now on MN. There are rules, but they're clear and once you get into the habit of only buying the same list of foods each week - salmon, avocado, veg, eggs etc., you really can switch off and forget about it.
When you're eating out, there is a freedom to knowing that the crisps, ice-cream, bread and crisps are not for you, but the salad, veg, protein, cream and berries are.
Weekly weightloss is a great motivator and getting into clothes you want to wear, so whatever you decide that you can stick to consistently for months will work. Plus a plan on how to maintain when you get near goal. Good luck!

Vegan won’t help you lose weight. It can be hard to not replace meat and dairy with carbs. I actually put weight on when I did veganuary.

Slimming world has worked wonders for friends with the same amount (and more) as you to lose. Ignore the sweetners and muller lights etc and you’ve got a diet based around eating more veg, measured carbs and lean protein.

I didn’t like MFP because it was hard not to get obsessed with calories. Lots of others really rate it.

Blankscreen · 05/05/2018 08:01

My friend has been doing slimming world and lost a pound and a stone since January.

I've been using MFP and lost 13 llbs since january so not much of a difference.

MFP is free and quick to start using. It's literally straight forward calorie counting. Nothing to really understand. You just scan in your food as you go.
Down load the app and start today. 😀.

No excuses about needing to buy the book etc. Just do it and you'll feel great in a few weeks.

NotMeNoNo · 05/05/2018 08:11

I would really recommend low carb. If you think it looks impossible or you would never manage without bread, just try it for a week and see how you get on.

FluffyPinkCloud · 06/05/2018 08:41

Thank you for responses everybody. I think I’m just going to cut out pasta, pizza, rice, takeaways. All the crap basically. I can’t believe I’ve let myself get to this size again. I haven’t been here since just before I got married and that was devastating enough. I can’t believe it.

I believe dieting makes you fat, so be careful OP. It can create a self-hatred and self-denial mindset.

VLCD actually increases the proportion of fat to muscle in your body as the body metabolises muscle when you're in starvation mode. So VLCDs actually make you more fat! Best way is slowsly and surely change habits. Give yourself a long time, months and years to do this, rather than "lose 1 stone in 4 weeks" mentality - a recipe for hunger, obsession and misery for lots of people.

You don 't need to weigh yourself if you don't want to! Its just a number after all. Focusing on that is not helpful for some people (for others it doesn't bother them). To my mind it is more helpful to live positively in the present.

For all the books I 've read, and I've read scores of them, I believe:

  1. All food groups - healthy proteins, carbs and fats are necessary. Cutting out any one food group has negative consequences.
  1. Structure. Some structure in the day really helps. Breakfast, lunch, dinner. This helps stop "starving" and "bingeing" yo-yo. I've tried 'intermittent dieting' 5:2 and so on, but for me this just increased "disordered eating". My body (in its wisdom) eventually wanted me to eat more regularly and this is what I ended up doing regardless, but I hadn't changed my cooking etc, so ended up exactly where I started.
  1. Create more pleasure in your life Smile. Whatever feels good for you SmileSmileSmile.

If you are eating healthy food, and not allowing yourself to get overhungry, then your body will find its natural weight over time. There's no real hurry. And there's no need even for targets!

I hope that helps.
