Giving up sugar vs. Low carb diet

I've been trying to lose weight recently, I want to lose about 3 stone and am struggling to stick to anything . A friend suggested I might be addicted to sugar. Having done some reading I am wondering if I might indeed be addicted, the main reason being I really don't want to give up! I've looked at Sarah Wilson I quit sugar and a few other books. These programs seem to cut sugar and refined carbs but are not low carb. However low carb means you would definitely cut all sugar and might be better for weight loss. The reason I'm hesitant is that I tried low carb before and didn't get on well with it. On a low sugar diet I would have more choice and it seems less like a diet, since the main goal is to quit sugar. But if one of my main goals is to lose weight will it be more sensible to go low carb right away?
Has anyone given up sugar and had success losing weight that way? Also did you use a program like I quit sugar or other? Or is true low carb better?

I have been reading David Gillespie's books "Sweet poison" and "The sweet poison quit plan" and I am sure I am addicted to sugar! His idea seems to be that by sorting out your fructose addiction your body works as if should and controls your appetite properly so you loose weight. You may be better off quitting sugar first as it may be quite tough and then thinking about low carbing in a few weeks.
I have been eating less fructose for a few days and am quitting on Tuesday, I have a serious sweet tooth and think I am likely to put on some weight while I get over the sugar cravings but just plan to get through it any way I can.

Thanks I am going to give Sweet Poison a read. I read the first chapter and I see he started his research after struggling with low carb himself. I was thinking that if just quitting sugar is enough to normalise the appetite and prevent bingeing but not enough to lose weight quickly I might combine it with 5:2 which I also believe has good health benefits but have previously had trouble sticking to due to my tendency to overeat or binge.
But I shall start by reading his book and then see if I can get the motivation to quit before anything else!
